They are plastic and it does not hurt at all when you get hit. The downside is that the plastic is hard and needs to be broken in for a while. Try wearing them around for a day, it works. Recently I noticed a hole in my left glove, I sewed it back up and everything was fine, but they still did tear. Also they are not the prettiest gloves, but I say function before form.
