Recballers, this is for you. I know how it felt to go out there with a rental gun back in the day and be next to a guy with a timmy and see 6 or 7 balls of his fly for every one of mine. it is depressing. dont waste your time on spyder clones, give this a shot.
This marker will enable people to get into paintball and level the playing field among other rec players. For woodsball I still would recomend an A5 before this gun, but for all around recball, this is a great marker. its better then most markers in it's price range, and better then all of them at what it does. It is fairly light and easy to handle, big advantages for beginners. This marker will allow new players to have a fast marker to help them keep up with the big guns for cheap. It might not be as nice, as fast or as consistent, but its a hell of alot better then spyder clones, impys and other low end electros.
As for tourney play, I dont recomend this as a primary gun. Go for something that has an established aftermarket and reputation. The ion is a good marker, but just not cut out for Novice or higher level playing. It would be ok to use to try out tourney style play, but not if you want to stick with it. Invest in a DM4/5 or a Proto.
However, there is not enough of an aftermarket. it is cheap feeling compared to other markers i have used. stock parts arent the best. I'd compare it to the WGP Trilogy in that it is somewhat like a stripped down Shocker like a Trilogy is a bottom of the line cocker.
I'd recomend this marker to anyone looking for a start in the sport without spending too much money. Sure you can go out a buy a used angel for $400, but that is older, worn out and has no warranty. The Ion is a great marker for what it is built to do. As for SP's claim that it is a "high end marker for $300", i have to disagree. I say it is among the upper of the low end electros with the impys.
Ok, well i have read like 1,000,000 reviews on this gun and all i hear is "It's a great gun for $300 but it can't keep up with a timmy or angel"
My team play a pretty good set with some local team we met at the kops tournament a few weeks ago. we have a decent five man setup right now, rigs as follows
(Final) <---my team
Back Dark Cocker
Mid: Dynasty Shocker
Front Angel Fly
New angel speed
Now, you really can't do much better then that unless you got rid of their Emag and gave them a timmy. And yes skill does obviously come into play in this senario, but my ION kept up with every other gun out there, i never once was out matched that i can remeber .
And before anyone makes any stupid comments about the other team being newb,
I'm not from around here, i'm just stationed on an airforce base in the area and my team is made up of the cops i work with on base. we have only played 1 tourny and they aren't good at all. I'm the only one with any tourny exp and Meth, has been togather for almost 4 years.
So i guess what i'm gettiing at is, this gun with just a few upgrades is a very tourny worthy marker with a very bright future.

Hey, I havent even bought this gun yet and it seems good. The guy that wrote this review is absolutely correct. It sucks to go out there even with a spyder clone. I have a black dragun LCD and its breakable like a spyder, looks like a spyder, and just doesnt give me the feeling like i can own. Its loud and heavy. I HAVE TO BUY AN ION. so, dont talk trash.
Obviously this review is old but now the actual upgrades for this marker is phenominal! Everything can be put into this marker and still keep the price down from the $1000 and more dollar guns. I have mine fully decked out that there is nothing left but the detents. Overall i have shot it, lubed it, shot it again and it keeps performing like a high end marker. Take care of your gun just like you take care of your d!%k!
