Review: Hogback Mountain is the furthest of the 3 fields from the DC or Fairfax Area. It's located off of Route 15 just before Leesburg. It's not well marked (though the road you turn off on is Hogback Mountain Road...) and unless you're looking for it, it would be easy to get lost. After a 2 mile drive through the estate you finally get to the field. Parking was a bit tight but not to bad. The price for players with their own equipment was $10 and rentals were $30. Payment was Cash only, which is kind of a downer and not fun for those of us who like to pay with Plastic. The fields have significantly gone downhill in the last 5 years. They're not well maintained at all and the field is basically one step above outlaw ball. Some of the terrain blew and the stacked wood didn't add much to the game. I mean...geez...they should go blow $100 at Home Depot and buy some plywood and build cheap bunkers. The walk up the mountain to the fields was a bit of endurance and the fields though awesome for woodsball were depressing for speedball but better than other locales.

The refs there weren't particularly good and I probably should have checked some for a pulse just to make sure they were alive. The place as a whole didn't do a good job letting people know when games were starting and they need to get more organized. The games were really not that enjoyable and is filled almost exclusively with newbies (clueless ones at that). I'm not likely to go back at this point just because of the clueless players and refs.

The owner, Jim, strikes me as a raving idiot. Apparently Pevs has been cutting into his business significantly since moving to AG in 02. (Not surprising at all since Pevs is actually a class act and is leaps and bounds ahead of Hogback in customer service, attitude and professionalism). The hogback staff seems to have it out for players that play at Pevs. Why, I'm not quite sure, but I can safely say that the attitude of the owner, field staff and other personnel is beyond childish. They have prohibited players with pevs stickers from playing there and have covered pevs players markers in hogback stickers and have refused to fill air tanks as well. This is seriously immature and helps to guarantee that I won't go back. I mean, if you're trying to attract business, it stands to reason that you should attempt to make the experience pleasant for the players, not troublesome....if you want them to come back. I personally hope Hogback and Check-It go out of business and that Pevs buys them out.

There's no proshop so you're on your own if something breaks. Parking is muddy and tight...get there early. All in all, a garbage field, with garbage personnel. Drive to Pevs and see what paintball is all about.
