More than 5 years
Other Fields in the Area:
Commando, lots of Fields, some ok some look good but dont play well. gear is in really bad shape, not a family friendly place.
PSI, only in door in the area and its just so so, out door is sad, gear ok
Ottawa Ex, small only 3 fields and they are all the same, good for pump only, needs new gear
Tactik. very good set up, good fields, ok gear, very good props and scenario games
Frontline. Very good set up, largest fields i have ever played in Ottawa, best gear i have ever seen for rent. great field layouts, still growing and should get better with time.
i wont even bother to name the rest but have played all over north America in the last 22 years
Directions to the Field:
Directions to Commando is ok, you probably will drive pass the entrance the first time, the sign is small and dark and blends into the back ground.
i just want to say that i have been playing for over 20 years and have played all over north America. I look at what the field has to offer, eg. Fields, gear, safety, knowledge of the sport and gear, cleanliness, prices, staff and Refs and facillities, ect
i have been playing at Commando for over 8 years, this is not a place to bring your family or kids, i wont say why but lets just say its more for the the younger partying type.
The fields are ok, some look amazing but they dont play very well. others are not bad but needs to be thought out better when being built.
Gear, well what can we say about the gear. same as most places good old Tippman 98, the work horses of paintball but not in very good or safe working order, the masks are really bad and get washed in the water from the pond. not very hygienic, cheap lenses so lots of scratches and fogging issues. Overalls are bad, they smell and ripped and just sitting on the floor for you to go through, right where the last group left them. paint is good old white box paint with there name on it, OK paint to use.
if your lucky to get a safety briefing, its not very good anyways, same goes for the Refs, if your lucky to get one, keep your eye on him/her, they tend to disappear and leave you waiting to long in between brakes. they really dont ref games, more like stand off to the side an watch.
i find the place is very muddy when its not a dry spell, the facilities well there are non really, the go huts never are clean and smell so bad you cant get close to them, you really don't have any place to gear up except for a few picnic tables and a "club house" that is dark and smells but over all OK, you do have to be careful of the staff that rips around in some of the vehicles, they drive like its a off road course through the playing fields and staging area and then you need to watch for the 4 wheelers. they are even worse, i dont know how many times my truck has been hit with flying rocks being kicked up from them driving around like that. Dead zones of safety zones, small and not very good and not to many of them,
price is the same as everyone else...
over all its just OK. i play at many places and go back from time to time just to play with some friends but would never go if it wasn't for them, this field needs a complete overhaul and new friendly staff.
This is just my opinion from what i have seen and witnessed first hand, i have seen worse fields but its far from being one of the better fields...i'm sure this review will be trashed from the staff and owner and his sons.
Dispute: Mr Zeagle i find it amazing that you wait until febuary 2 1/2 months after the season is closed and there is no paintball to be played in ottawa to post ur comments why wouldnt you do it in november just before the season closed what did you just wake up all of a sudden in febuary and decide to write this post to trash a field thats been around for 26 years. It just seams to me that you did this on purpuse to trash all the fields and praise only one maybe instead of trashing us and all the fields but one you should have put ur creativeness into the field that you like and post on there site.We as people could just as well post on the site that u so do praise and trash the hell out of it but i will not stoop to your level. Then you use someone elses email to hide behind and send emails from there to my customers .You my friend are a coward if you have the balls why dont you email me or hey just call me and tell me but you wont because your a coward. ....COMMANDO DAVE
Wow man, if you find that Commando is such a bad field...how come you played there for 8 years? And when was the last time you played at Commando.
First off, masks: Yes, they are cleaned in pond water, which is boiled to the point that it is drinkable. Not only is all the bacteria dead, it will also disolve all the paint on the mask and remove all the drit and sweat, which is what you need. Lenses are changed rugularly, and if anyone finds that they are too scratched or dirty, the staff will gladly give you a better one, no questions asked. Fogging: they are masks....they fog...not much can be done.
Safety briefing: everyone is given one before they go out and play. The only time i have seen a safety briefing not givin is when there is a group of 4 people sent to join a bigger group, then the refs give them a run down of the rules.
Now, if you are complaining that the woods are muddy after it rains....seriously...its the boonies...it gets muddy....get used to it.
Porto-Johns get cleaned once a week....and if you want to stand in them and make sure the guys dont miss...be my guess. If not, then there isnt much the staff can do about it, and lets face it, any porto-john in the middle of summer will smell bad, no matter where you go.
As for kids and families, Commando gets them all the time, from kids hockey groups, to dad and the kids out for some fun. Contrary to what you might think, the staff are not idiots, the realize that kids are not to be treated the same as adults, and so the act accordingly.
I find that this review is HIGHLY inaccurate, and should not be taken seriously. And no, i am not one of the owner's sons, i'm just a guy who has been playing there for 3 years now, and has seen how Commando has goten better and better.
for the people who trash commando paintball we dont want ur kind here anyways,ur the people who are never happy no matter what they have, and as for the commando haters we dont want you here. So go play on the mickey mouse playing fields in ottawa with there scrub brush fields and pallet barricades buddy. Here at commando its go big or go home. Commando has been around since the beginning and every year they are getting bigger and bigger,Every week i get personal emails from people who have had a great time,i chat with people on the phone and ask why choose commando over my competitors and they say because Commando is the best,i ask people if they are having a good time here at commando and the response is always the same We are not number one in the city for nothing just to show the people heres a link to some pics
and as for the commando haters we dont want you here
I've played at Commando a couple of times. I guess Zeagle had a bad day or something, but my experience has been that Commando's a great place to play. They're friendly, and the refs are cool, they let you do your own thing, and so long as you play safe they don't hassle you. Some of the facilities are a little rough, but this isn't a hotel, it's a paint ball field, and where it matters ( on the field) Commando has their S**T together. They've got a bunch of fields, they've all got good barricades, and all the brush has been cleared, so you don't have to worry about paint breaking on twigs and branches. The military bases have lots of cool stuff set up around it, like trucks and boats and buildings. Most maps have some kind of tower. If you want a nice club house and running water, stay at home. If you want to play paint ball in mock military bases, and stuff, go to commando.
The guns are 98s, which is basically the norm, some of safeties don't work, but that's what the barrel bag and your finger are for. Last time I used their rental stuff, I shot a case of paint and didn't chop a single ball. The guns all use HPA, and they'll let you borrow an HPA tank if you bring your own gun. I find it's one of the better fields in Ottawa.
