If you don't want to get hurt, then don't play. I took a close shot to the neck. Oh, well. If you can't take the pain, don't play the game. I saw a couple of guys try to stay in even though they took a direct shot to the head. If you get shot, own up to it. No one likes a cheater. I also saw a couple of guys shooting blind. Not cool. Don't be a wuss. Look before you shoot.
As for the ref's; they are fair and care about safety. Having your mask on is common sense. Before you enter into the playing area, you should have your mask on. Wait till you are outside the playing area to take it off. Enough said.
We went in a group of 25 and all had a great time. If you're reading this and are about to go for your first time, don't be afraid to ask the refs questions about anything and everything before the start of the match.
