Take the 19 to Waianuenue Avenue. Waianuenue Ave. to Akolea Road and then turn right. At the tenth power pole make an immediate left into an open field to the left of the house. Beware of a BIG dog at the house (he is chained up)! You should see the black netting in front of you. If on the Kona side of the island, take the 19 to Waikoloa Road inland to the 190 (Mamalahoa Highway). Turn left onto the 190 and follow until you reach Saddle Road and turn right. Take Saddle Road to Kaumana Drive and turn left. Take Kaumana Drive to Akolea Road and turn left. Take Akolea road for 1.3 miles and make a right turn into the parking area.
Review:
This is the only paintball park on the Big Island of Hawai'i and it's on the Hilo side of the island. So if you are staying in Kona, expect at least a 1:30hr (take Saddle Road) to 2:25hr drive (if the 19 is taken all the way around). Chris is the owner of the field and the onsite pro-shop (still under construction). There are 3 fields on the four acres of land behind Chris's friends house. One is a tournament field with the field laid out according to what the next NPPL setup will be. This gives team Pandemonium (Div. 2) a chance to practice. The other two fields are setup for woods ball for those not interested in the faster pace of tournament ball. Chris told me that the field has big games every 1st and third Sunday of the month where about 50 people show up for fun. The weekend I showed up happened to be an off week for them but the field was still open and players did show up to play at about 10am. Although I could stay for an hour only and my Ion was leaking air, I enjoyed the time I had to play one on one with Jake and then three on three when a few kids showed up to play. Fees are pretty cheap due to no entry fee. They do sell paint ranging from $40 to $50 per box of 2000 and for a field that that requires field paint only, I am more than happy to pay that amount. Compressed Air fills are $8 for all day and varies for those who use CO2. The staging area are tables and chairs under a tarp and a washing station near the chrono station. The speed allowed is 285fps (which I like) and you are required like any other field to have a barrel blocking device on at all times in the staging area and prior to start of game play. The one thing I did not fill out though was a waiver, I forgot to ask about one but hopefully we all know the dangers of playing paintball while being smart or stupid. We're responsible for our own actions and not the field! Bring your own food and drinks! Unless you are willing to try and get past the big GUARD dog and try and beg the homeowner for food and water. Since this is Hawaii, remember to bring enough Gatorade, Powerade, and or water to stay hydrated in the humid climate. If equipped, bring your bore kits with you due to the paintballs expanding; no need for unnecessary clogging of your marker. I used my Freak kit with a .691 bore size and did not encounter problems with the paint (Premium was used this visit). All in all, I enjoyed my trip to Hawaii and am more than happy about being able to paintball in another state besides California. Now I have to get back to work and start saving up for another trip to back out there hopefully next year.
I played at their new field up in Akolea above Hilo Hospital. They were out in Keaau but move to town. It was super kool. Its like playing in a stadium. My friends guys can hang out behing a full on netted safty zone and watch all the action down below on the huge field. Everybody was kool. They seperated us into 3 groups of players. Beginners, rec ballers, and the super good guys. All the guys were helpful and friendly. You can check out the field on the web site @ pbheaven.com. Too bad they don't play alot of woods ball their. They have alot of pump players and newbs. The pros were really kool to us. Go check this place out! We'll be going back as much as our money will let us.
Ok, Run-a-Muck field is ok if you like fast pace bunker ball that’s up in your face, but for those that like to use strategy this isn't your field.
The field is small so you go running for covers when the referee says go. Once you get cover you are pinned, and after that you are in a shoot out till the end of the round.
The referees are fair and the people there are nice. One cool thing is that when your not playing you can watch the whole field behind a net and see what works and what doesn’t with out worrying about losing an eye.
