About 4 years back I took my then 13 year old son to NJ Paintball Club with a group of other dads and their sons. It was pretty much the first time any of us had ever played. That day I remember the staff was fairly strict on all procedures and safety rules but overly strict with their “goggles on” policy. At the time I didn’t quite understand why but the staff came across as serious and we made sure the boys abided by everything they told us. All we wanted to do was to have some fun and following the rules seemed a small price to pay. I also remember the end of the day when none of us wanted to leave and the boys kept begging for “one more game in their village field”.
Being in the insurance business (my department collects and distributes national insurance results) I took the opportunity to research paintball injuries, how they happen, and who is most likely to get hurt. Although I won’t list all the information there are a few facts that “everyone should know if you plan to play this sport”. Please note these are national figures.
Fact number one: The occurrence of paintball eye injuries treated in emergency departments had risen from an estimated 550 in 1998 to over 1200 in 2000. This figure increased approximately 45% from 2000 to 2003.
Fact number two: The above injuries were seen predominately in boys who were playing on unsupervised fields.
Fact number three: Many of the above patients sustained visual impairment, with 43% having best vision at follow-up of 20/200 or worse.
Just recently most of the above dads, myself included, just booked our fourth outing with NJ Paintball Club. At the end of each outing we typically share war stories, compare bruises but most importantly we all walk away with both eyes. I don’t know one father in our group that doesn’t like this club. For us they can’t be strict enough when it comes to wearing eye protection. If anyone reading this wants to risk their own eyes or worst yet their kid’s eyes to some club that is not strict then be my guest and go ahead. One thing’s for sure you won’t see me there.

First time I visited this place, but I've heard about it forever. Been wanting to play here forever. Since they don't accept walk-ons, I had to wait until I could tag along with some buddies from a Fire House. I have to say I was real impressed by the way this place is run. They sent us a checklist and a gun advisory (cause I was bringing my own paintball gun) and I have to say, everything they said in that paperwork was done to the letter.
I hit the gate just before 8am and the security guard waited till 8 on the dot to let me in. The refs watched like a hawk to make sure I had a barrel plug in my gun before I took it out of the car. They had me rack my gun in a secure area until it was time to chrono (I was actually happy about this regulation... after almost having had my eye shot out at Top Gun once by players shooting up the parking lot!). The chrono ref make sure each gun shot at 285 or below. Without exception. Not like some other places where you chrono on the honor system (yeah, right). Check in began promptly at 8:30, just like they said it would (although I did see some other group hanging around waiting cause they had lost players showing up late).
After a detailed (and I mean, they covered everything) orientation, and a quick lesson in the target range for newbies in our group, we hit the first playing field and kicked off our first game at 9:35. Not bad, compared to what I'm used to at other fields.
We played 6 games in the morning on two different fields... I actually ran out of paint and air in the last game. Again... not what I'm used to, playing so many games and burning through the paint.
By the way... paintballs here are around the same price as at Cousins, Depot, and Skirmish. The paint was Sterling, from England, which got good reviews in APG and shot good in my Mag. If you want to save money on paint, pay for it before you visit and save 10%. If you're used to playing BYOP fields... don't bother coming here... it's field paint only (like most places) and you'll just get sticker shock at the prices. But lets face it, some people can't afford to play a field like Skirmish, Cousins, or NJ Paintball. That's cool. As long as you're playing and having fun, go where you can afford to go. When you hit it big time, try out a more expensive field for the experience. The difference between a place like this and say ABC or Ruckus (both BYOP) is night and day.
House guns are Tippmann 98's. None of the newbies on my team had a problem with them. Helmet systems are JT... with some weird chemical they spray inside that cuts fogging big time (I bought a wiper- it works).
Speaking of goggles- this place is serious about safety. They drum it in your head relentlessly. They even make you wear goggles in the dead zones, which is a good thing, since the way they are situated, an occasional stray ball did fly in, not to mention splatter even penetrating the netting. Who wants paint in the eye?
What else? Airpass is $10 for all day, same as everywhere else. CO2 or Nitrous.
Staff seemed to be all older guys, like 40 maybe even 50. Even the women, though there was one hot chick reffing too. Again, not what I'm used to at some places where they have 15 year old kids trying to ref. These older dudes seemed to look like they could have done this in their sleep. Very confident. Very experienced. Maybe a retired tournament team or something. Like they were so used to it all they were almost falling asleep. I guess it is kind of boring watching newbies play. But I was having fun and getting lots of kills.
I'd like to play here again, definitely. The fields are killer. But I'll have to wait till somebody puts another group together. If you're planning something and looking for another player, contact me on the Forum. I'll be a ringer for your team! lol

Let’s see, where to start? I’ve only played here once, and I guess it’s worth mentioning that I don’t intend to play here again. That being said, it isn’t all bad.
Safety first. Two words: top notch. This field is on top of safety. They give a detailed safety orientation before you play, there are at least two refs with every group (mine had three, the number is based on group size), and they have zero tolerance for unsafe behavior. The refs are extremely careful, constantly reminding people about masks, barrel plugs/condoms, and safeties. And this is without anyone having violated any of the rules. They take a very proactive approach to preventing accidents, and this is very good.
There is a downside to all of this attention to safety. It is that the quality of play is actually hindered by some of the more extraneous regulations. For example, each field has a dead zone, or maybe 2 dead zones (one for each team) nearby. However, these are not sealed against paintballs, its orange construction fence rather than the usual safety netting. This means masks must remain on at all times. Ok, that’s perfectly reasonable. Also, markers, even when plugged, are not allowed in the dead zones. Now this doesn’t make much sense, as masks are on and the zones aren’t sealed anyway. When the game ends, everyone has to rack their markers outside the dead zone, and only when all markers are racked, plugged, and safetied can masks be removed. Ok, but this creates about 20 minute of waiting between games. Not cool. My group only played 9 games all day long. It would be much easier if they just sealed the dead zones like every other field and let players take their masks off while inside. Sure, make players leave their markers outside if they think people will accidentally shoot.
On to the fields themselves. My group only played on three over the course of the day, but they were nice fields. Varied and interesting terrain, seemed to be well maintained, a bit muddy after a few days or rain, but that’s understandable, happens everywhere. Dead zones at each end of most fields is good, but the fact that they aren’t exactly “dead” kind of defeats the purpose.
Price can be described as pretty expensive. Entry all day with your own equipment is $20, an all-day air pass for one tank, CO2 or HPA, is $10. Paint is $103 per case, $90 if ordered in advance. Ouch. And it’s not good paint either, it’s cheap stuff.
I feel like I have to comment on the overall running of the field. For the most part their staff in friendly, but it just isn’t an inviting place to play. Walk-ons aren’t allowed. They open at 8 am. Not 7:50. Get there early and they turn you away. And they take a long, long time to get reading in the morning. We didn’t get on the fields until almost 10:45. By the time everyone in my group arrived, about 30 people, it was about 8:30. That’s 2 hours of just waiting around and finally checking in around 10. They don’t like for people to bring their own markers, either. They take in from you when you get out of your car and you can’t touch it until you chrono. So even though the safety is good and the fields are nice, I didn’t have as much fun as I could have, mostly because this field just isn’t as customer-friendly as it ought to be. 6/10. |

NJ Paintball Club is designed for PRIVATE GROUPS.... they don't even accept walk ons! I discovered this field when they did accept walk-ons, back in 2001, and never forgot the awesome terrain and strict adult no-nonsence refs (who all look like they've been there since paintball was invented 20 plus years ago).
When I had to organize a Bachelor Party for my buddy a few years ago I decided that NJ Paintball would be the safest, most conveniently located, and most service oriented place to play. I wasn't mistaken! Those people up there are SERIOUS about safety and SERIOUS about making sure you get the most games in for your money. They run that place like a clock. On schedule. None of the late starts, mass confusion, and chaos I used to experience at other bigger fields. I've been back at least once a year for a bachlor party or a work related outing.
But, like I said, the big star at NJ Paintball is the terrain. This has got to be the best woodsball site in the NYC area. There isn't any sup air and there isn't any speedball... they do have an awesome village... but it's mostly awesome woods. Their website really shows it all.
One possible downside for players bringing their own paintball guns: they have no proshop and no gun tech. So you better be able to repair and chrono your own gun (however, there is a paintball shop only 2 miles away that you can drive to for repairs).
Only other thing to note: they have like ZERO TOLERANCE for goggle violations. They give you PLENTY of warnings before play begins. Like a full 30% of their waiver is just the goggle rules in big letters! And as a goof I counted how many times they told us to keep our goggles on during the morning orientation... 27 times. Naturally we had a jerk in the bachelor party who lifted his mask as soon as he was hit... but because the rest of us started yelling at him to put his goggles on, the ref was cool about it and gave him a second chance. It seems like if you and your friends are willing to cooperate and help the ref enforce the goggle rules, the ref will work with you in the event of a minor infraction. But I've seen other players ejected in a heartbeat if they pop an attitude or continue to lift their goggles. That's cool. I don't want to see any of my friends carted off in an ambulance with an eye missing. I'd rather have a ref who was on top of it than a ref who didn't give a crap.

I don't want to say any more than the ref/owner kicked 2 of our players out for the entire day after the very first game for removing their masks. Both players were first timers and yeah the refs went over the mask rule a million times but how can you justify basically charging someone 80 bucks to sit in the parking lot all day while the rest of the group plays on. First timers are not used to the mask rule, and even if you tell them many times, they will forget during that first game when the excitement, and nerves will probably make them forget the rules. The 2 players told me they didn't even remove the masks, 1 was adjusting their mask and 1 fell off because of her pony tail but the one ref was not forgiving at all. Anyway, its a shame because despite the kicking out of our players we had a good time but because of their policy on customer service I know of 24 people that will make the extra hour drive to Skirmish the next time we want a private field. |

You can go to this place if you want to: ruin your bachelor parties, birthday parties, corporate outgoing, or waste 80$.
Seriously, would you like to be expelling from the field in the beginning of the first game to the rest of the day? How would you like if you best body get kicked out for the rest of the day? You may experience this felling if you try to adjust your mask on the field. I am not talking about taking it of completely. Just try to arrange it a little bit in front of the ref. I guarantee you will be out to the rest of the day. As one of the refs says, “ We are here not to insure you guys have a fun but to insure your mask is on”.
The actual fields are OK but nothing special. You can find similar almost anywhere. Paint is cheap and expensive. There is no food. You have to bring it with you. If you will use your gun make sure it is working 100%. You won’t be able to adjusted or tune it at this place. This is the worst place I was ever played.

Ruckus- NJPC has much better woods fields. Ruckus however allows BYOP if you have your own gear, and even without BYOP they stock very good paint. But NJPC fields are much larger and more interesting in general.
ABC- Not much of a comparison here. Only good thing WAS ABC used to be BYOP, but not anymore from what someone told me the other day... |

NJPC has great woods fields, much better than Cousins,Top Gun, FireballMt., PBDepot, or Liberty. That is saying a lot.
Staff is strict but generally very good and they will ref the game as you hope refs would, that is they rove around and watch for hits or questionable situations.
No walk-on games is a real real drag.
Paint isn't cheap, and should be better grade for the price.
The field are what maek this field a great place to play ball, that and the very good safety standards. |

I went to this place a few months after I got my gun and it was my birthday party in 7th grade. It is a great place. The fields are nice and have good designs for different types of objections such as capture the flag or just elimination. The guides are very good, but they are strict when it comes to gameplay and goggles. The only bad thing about this place is the paint. The paint sucks and it is 100 dollars a case. Otherwise its pretty fun.| Last edited on Thursday, June 2nd, 2005 at 1:10 pm PST |

NJ paintball has a few decent fields. Most of thier feilds are one sided meaning that if you are on 1 side you will win. Their referees are friendly but very very strict. They dont mess around with mask lifting during gameplay or dead time. They will dock you the whole day with no money back. Also if you are having gun problems they will not help you. They will just make you rent one of their abused Tippmanns. So make sure you can fix your own gun uf you go there. The paint prices their are ridicuolous 115 for cheap paint from ireland. When I opened the box the their were loose balls in the box and broken paint. My Tippmann and my E orracle have never chopped untill at New Jersey. I had a simple bal jam that I needed help with and they neglected to help me. If u want a nice paintball place to go to and have fun while saving a buck or two go to knightbreed. Once they have byob day(bring your own paint). That is a money saver.

This place seemed like a paintball country club, all the people who go there every day are really stuck up. I asked if i could borrow one of their allen wrenches and he told me to get my own. The paint prices are 100 bucks. They're strict about safety and that's a good thing, I dont think i want to lose an eye. This place is awesome for woodsball with all the trees and 1 person bunkers. |
