Review: My son had his birthday party at Pev's because he had a great time attending a friends birthday party there the previous month. The staff in the shop were great; however, the shop is small and there were many larger groups there to play on the open field. I had a spot reserved for the birthday party but it took a long time to get through the registration that the kids got to the field after our time to start. It would be helpful to have people not registering to not be in the shop. The space is limited and with a bunch of people standing around, it is hard to see who is in line for what. When we finally made it to the field, we were rushed along by a ref and there were still players on the field. We had to wait until they got off the field before we could get on. Our hour time slot ended up being about 40 minutes. Since this was the first time playing for some of the boys, we went through a lot of paint. It would be helpful if the refs could bring extra equipment with them (i.e. paint, CO2, guns) just in case there are malfunctions or the kids need more paint. I felt like my son didn't get his moneys worth nor did I. Even though we started late, the ref was sure to get us off the field in time.

Review: Pev's to me is the yardstick that I would measure all the other local fields to. It is not necessarily the best, but definitely one of my favorites for various reasons.

Pros:
1) Large - many different field choices
2) Organized - the refs are confident and know what they are doing, good staging area
3) Friendly - the staffs are friendly and helpful, for example, one time when my friend's marker wasn't working right, they lent him a rental for free

Cons:
1) Large - Sometimes they have ridiculously huge walk-on group, one time there were 60+ people?!
2) Cost - It used to be decent, but the price is recently raised to $25 for walk-on with own gun

Overall I think Pev's is still one of the top paintball fields around the area, and friends from my forum has been going there 70% of the time. True there are great fields like Warplay in terms of scenario games, but Pev's is my choice for a great all around local field. Definitely worth checking out if you have never been!

Review: I had been to Pev's a while back and then began playing pretty much exclusively at WarPlay. I decided to go back to Pev's to really try to make an apples-to-apples comparison with WarPlay.

For me, Pev's is more convenient location-wise, being about a .5 hour from where I live. WarPlay is about 1.5 hours away. I have a 4X4, so I'm not bothered by the rough road into Pev's and passing by all of those Deliverance-looking folks as I drive in. WarPlay is right off of Constitution Highway, so you basically go from paved road to their parking lot. Pev's is +1 over WarPlay for convenience.

Pev's has way more fields than WarPlay, so I expected that Pev's would be a slam-dunk on WarPlay because WarPlay really only has 3 fields. Even though WarPlay is smaller, it plays much larger because they run scenario games that comprise different parts of the same fields. Also, the construction of WarPlay's fields and structures is top notch. These guys really went to a lot of thought and expense in constructing superb fields. Also, WarPlay has a spawn (4-minute max), which virtually eliminates wipers. Pev's can get kinda trashy; no offense, they really need to clean that place up a bit. Warning: Unlike Pev's, WarPlay allows blind firing and has no 20-foot rule. WarPlay is +1 over Pev's for fields.

I've played enough to realize that the staff of a field are the most important element as to whether you're going to have a great time or an OK time. Pev's has a lot of good refs, but when I've played at Pev's, some of the refs must have been new or having a bad day. At WarPlay, the refs are very consistent and professional in running the games. It's a close call, but give WarPlay +1 over Pev's on refs.

Pev's is reasonably priced, so I have no complaints about that. WarPlay has different pricing, but they're basically the same. Pricing is a wash.

Pev's has a pro shop, WarPlay doesn't. I never buy from a field pro-shop anways, but Pev's is +1 over WarPlay for pro shop.

Pev's gets a lot more "teams" than WarPlay from what I can tell. I've played with and against "teams" in the past. At Pev's, some can be great players and nice--others can be great players and not so nice. At WarPlay, teams and individual players always seem to be friendly and looking to have a good time. Fields can't really control this too well, but I have to give WarPlay +1 over Pev's for quality of players.

I feel that the most important element of a field is safety. Pev's is safe. Even though WarPlay allows blind firing and has no 20-foot rule, the players are typically respectful enough to ask people to surrender instead of bunkering them from 2 feet away. Both fields are serious about safety. It's a wash.

Now, on to the next most important element--the Fun Factor. Fields are in business to make money, but most go into this type of business because they enjoy the hobby (make money + have fun = the kind of job I want). As much as I like Pev's, I have to hand the Fun Factor to WarPlay. At WarPlay, they go out of the way to make sure you're having fun. They literally ask you whether you're having fun and they solicit input from you. They run interesting scenarios that always keep the fields fresh. I give WarPlay +1 over Pev's on the Fun Factor.

The Bottom-Line: Pev's is super convenient--if that's a major factor for you, go to Pev's. If you don't mind driving (and I don't), WarPlay beats out Pev's. For me, having a great time at Pev's can be hit or miss. At WarPlay, you will have fun. Everytime I play at WarPlay, at the end of the day I'm exhausted, satisfied, paintless, and splattered with paint. Now, I know some of you die-hard Pev's players will comment on this or dispute me, and that's OK. But before you do, I challenge you to visit WarPlay first--then comment or dispute me.

See you at WarPlay!

Hogback Mountain Paintball
Review: This review covers my experiences at Hogback and Pevs, I hope it helps those who are newer and want want to decide on a field depending on what they want to get
into

Parking Lot
Ample Parking in a gravel lot. Hogback also has pretty ample parking.

Prices
It's $18 for field access ($15 if you have a Pevs Keychain), $5 for each fill of 4500 ($13 for All Day Air) and paint is in varying prices usually around $50-60. It is expensive! Hogback is $15 for field access and $5 for all day air regardless of tank size and pressure. I'm not sure on the field paint price at Hogback, since I have never bought any. If you have your own gear, you can use whatever paint you want at both fields. For Pev's all day air they give you a little zip tie you put on your tank and I was only able to fill up my one tank. Another big gripe I had is that when the day was not even over @ 4:45 PM when I wanted to fill up one last time, the Air Station had already closed and I wasn't able to fill up before I left to even make the All Day Air worth it. At Hogback, I was able to buy all day air and fill both my tanks so I was able to have air whenever I needed it, although it wasn't entirely necessary (more on this later)

Food
Never had it at either field, it's always nice to bring a packed lunch.

Access
At the field, there is a main staging area, which isn't in the best condition, but with all the years in business and all the dirt being kicked on by all the players, who doesn't expect that. Once you're all ready to go, the fields themselves are actually a distance away from the staging area. On any given day, be expected to walk a long journey from field to field. One good thing is that most of the route you won't need your goggles on, which is a plus when there's a high heat index. Compared to Hogback, you have to keep your goggles on most of the time when going to the fields and can take them off when you're in the designated zones for each field. I would say the distance to the fields at Hogbacks is the same as the distance at Pevs. The staging area for Hogback doesn't have a covered roof for all the benches (they are scattered around) but it is a nice place to sit and cool off.

Employees
I'm not sure on his name, but the guy who does the briefings is great. He ensures that everybody has a great time. Although he told a story about a player shooting a couple shots at a ref over the period of a few games and then the ref came back at him with 200 rounds (I hope this is an exaggeration) after he was fed up. He defended the ref, but I'm not sure that's the way to go about it. The guy should have been asked to leave, no one deserves 200 straight shots. The refs are easy to talk to, and they seem on the ball with the games. I believe that one of the policies of the refs should be to carry a hand chronograph or at the least, check to make sure everyone has the chronograph sticker. I can without a doubt tell that some players are overchronographed. I'm pretty sure this is an isolated incident, but it'd be great field practice to ensure fairness. I've never seen them ever check the chronograph stickers, so why am I wasting time in a line of people waiting to chronograph and get the sticker, when I could just chronograph myself at other times. Hogback gives you your tape for your team if you meet the chronograph limit. This is good for small scale, but I'm not sure it would be great at Pevs. Compared to Hogback, Pevs has more employees, but Hogback is definitely not short of any good refs. They only have less refs because they don't attract as large crowds. Hogback people are also extremely chill and just want you to have a good time.

Fields
The fields at Pevs great. There seem to be a diverse selection of fields and shapes. However a few of them of them seem very similar, since they incorporate the same types of bunkers (rollovers/crates/sandbags), the only difference is in the shapes of the field. Both fields have their own unique fields (Hogback- Castle and Pevs - Compound). I have to say one of the great aspects of Pevs is their hyperball field and air fields (although more often than not the air fields are deflated). It's not really freely advertised that you can go to those fields, but I guess those who go often already know that they're available for play. In retrospect, Hogback almost has non-existent air fields, but their woods fields are just on par with Pevs. I think Pevs loses to Hogback in fields because they lack amenities in the dead zones. At the Pevs deadzone, if you're out of air or paint, you're walking all the way back to the staging area/parking lot to get it. Sometimes you'll find a ref on an ATV who will get it for you, but this is quite rare. However at Hogback deadzones, there are usually 3000 PSI and CO2 fills, which makes life so much better in the sweltering heat. They will also ATV in some bottled drinks ($1-2) to sell (Pevs has coolers which are 75% of the time filled) along with paint if you need it. The walk to and from the fields is a big part of the experience, and anyway a field can improve on it makes my choice so much easier.

Conclusion
I think if you're looking at the situation price-wise and convenience-wise, you want to go to Hogback. The competition isn't as good as the competition at Pevs, so I think that's mostly what you're paying for at Pevs. More weekend warriors hit the Park at Pevs and you're almost guaranteed that when the sun is out, there are tons of players there. With the same conditions, Hogback will have slightly fewer people, but there is no shortage, which is also a good thing since the fields won't be overcrowded with people. Both fields have semi-stocked shops, although the one at Pevs is slightly better. I never find what I need at those pro shops anyway. Since I'm not the richest of players, I tend to stick to Hogback to save money and still have a great time, but when I'm inkling for some hyper/air ball, or just want to get together with some friends, I'll be at Pevs.

Review: UPDATE: well, today was a day that dropped Pev's a lot in my eyes. Arrived with a group of about 12 people to do walk-on. Also doing walk-on was Pev's sponsored pro paintball team, including at least one player who is also a ref there. We get to the field, and the refs make all the pro team one team, and any other poor souls who walked on the other team. If someone else arrived who was experienced who the pro team knew, they went to the pros' side. If newbies with rental Tippmans showed up, they went to the other side. What followed was wholesale slaughter. Pev's pretty much made us cannon fodder for their sponsored team. What added insult to injury is that the pro who is also a ref started directing how the games would be played so they could get the practice they wanted. It was ridiculous. I don't mind losing games, and I sure don' t mind being shot, but being put in lopsided games with newbies playing pros using hot 800-dollar superguns isn't fun.
When some of us approached the ref and suggested he split the walk-ons into beginner and advanced, he said no. He said they didn't see a need to. Well, when lunch came, most of us non-Pevs-team players just left.
My thought is if all we are are practice for Pev's' team, then they should just tell us "we're going to use you for our pros to beat up on" and let us play free. As it was, the games went by so fast we didn't get our money's worth anyway.
I routinely go there about twice a month with 12-20 people. We all decided after today that, if we ever get there and a sponsored team is playing walk-on (and they won't split up), we will get back in our cars and hit another field like Hogback. They can forgo the 20 paying customers to let their team play for free. Sure, we will miss most of the morning. But if the mornings are like this, we don't want to be there, anyway.

------------------------

After nearly 20 years hiatus from paintball, I am back to playing again. Have been going to Pevs walk-on's about twice a month for the last 5 months.

Positives: The fields themselves are nice, and they have enough to give you some variety. The staff is nice.

Negatives:
1) the food is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. It isn't bad or anything, but plan on dropping about 10 bucks to eat a decent meal. I really recommend bringing lunch, or at least your drinks.
2) Inconsistency in reffing. They have some very good refs. There is one guy who wears a black-and-white ref jersey who is really good, and he works hard to get you your money's worth (moves games along) and to run the games well. But sometimes you get a crew that either doesn't seem to know what they are doing, or that is too afraid to enforce rules on things like wiping and chrono. There are some crews that are right on things, and do paint checks, get people out without letting them get bonus-balled, etc. But if you get a bad crew it ruins the game.
3) paint prices. Frankly, these are too high at every field, so I can't just singe out Pev's. But even their white box stuff costs a lot. You can use your own paint, though, so again I can't gripe too much. When I had to buy it's because I didn't bring enough of my own paint.
4) running large groups on the small fields. They usually start the day at a couple of the smaller fields, but as more walk ons arrive it gets pretty crowded in there, with players tripping over each other. They need to either split up the walk ons or move to larger fields sooner.
5) Playing one field too long. The white-and-black ref is really good about "2 games at this field then we move on," but some others have run 3 or 4 games on the same field. With so many good fields there, that kind of stinks.
6) Picnic benches in the dead zones. It would be a lot nicer if there was a table or two at each field to use for quick fixes, reloading, etc. At best there is one, and usually all there is is an old cable spool that you can't really use because the water is on it and the refs stand on it.
7) lunch breaks of an hour (or more if things aren't going smoothly). That is just way too long. Usually everyone is done eating in 15 minutes, 30 max, so you sit around waiting to get back on the fields. Maybe this is standard practice, but if even if it is it doesn't make it any better.
8) Not splitting walk-ons into advanced and regular groups. Sometimes there aren't enough people to justify this, but I only saw Pevs do it once, and it made the day a lot better for both groups.

What I have found impacts how much fun I have, even more than the refs or prices, is the other players that show up. If you are lucky, most of those who show up are there to play fair and have a good time. They call themselves out when they should and socialize. Other times you get a group that pretty much just wants to show off how many balls their new super-guns can shoot and who won't call themselves out unless you hit them in the mask so they can't see. They are almost always 16 or under. Yeah, I know not all teens cheat. I'm not saying they do. It just seems like they are the biggest offenders, though (don't see many 40-year-olds wiping hits). When I see a group like that I don't know whether I want to be against them so I can try to hit them as many times as possible (if they won't call themselves out, at least I can inflict some pain), or be on their team because they keep shooting all game long no matter how many times the other team hits them. Again, this is probably the same at every field out there, not just at Pevs. What matters is how the refs handle the situation. And that is where I have seen Pevs come up short. Not all the time, but enough to be a problem.

In the end, I keep going to Pevs because it is closer than the others. If I was closer to Warplay, I'd rather be there. Since most of my playing was up in the northeast before (and a long time ago), and I haven't hit many places around here, you can factor that into how you take my review.

Skyline in Strasburg - Played here countless timess. Great field, friendly owners, on-point refs, excellent prices (cases are much cheaper than PEVs). All around a great walk-on experience.

Directions
to the Field:
20136, Gant Lane, Leesburg, VA, 20175.

From the Capital Beltway - Take 495 to Rt. 7 West. Go 20.6 miles and turn Left at light on Rt. 653 (just after Goose Creek), follow Rt. 653 for 3.8 miles. Bear Left at all forks in the road and follow signs.

From Northern Virginia Area - Take the Dulles Greenway Toll Road (Rt. 267 until it ends. At Exit 1B take exit ramp to the light. Make right on Sycolin Road (Rt. 643). Go 2.6 miles to Cochran Mill Road. Turn left and go .7 miles to fork. Go Right on Gant Lane. Follow the signs to parking area.

From Gaithersburg, Maryland Area - Take Whites Ferry into Virginia and make a Left onto Rt. 15. Follow Rt. 15 until it splits and bear to the Left on Bypass 15 (do not take Business 15). Follow Bypass 15 to Sycolin Road (Rt. 643). Make Left at Light. Go 2.6 miles to Cochran Mill Road. Turn Left and go .7 miles to fork. Go Right on Gant Lane. Follow the signs to parking area.

From Frederick, Maryland Area - Take Rt. 15 South to Bypass 15 and follow Bypass 15 to Sycolin Road (Rt. 643). Make Left at Light. Go 2.6 miles to Cochran Mill Road. Turn Left and go .7 miles to fork. Go Right on Gant Lane. Follow the signs to parking area.
Review: Price - It's expensive to play at PEVs.....that's the bottomline. Field paint is expensive-cases start at around $65 for paint that won't bust in your barrel (the same case will normally will run you $45 on actionvillage.com) note: they have a decent selection of paint, but don't buy that whitecase crap they sell in the shop. If you're forced into buying field paint, I'd recommend Draxxus Blaze as fairly reasonably priced ammo for it's quality. Food is somewhat reasonable ($2.50 for h'dogs and gatorade, but I recommend bringing your own water/drinks) All day nitro is $13 (indiv fills for $3/5 for 3000/4500).

Fields - Great selection of fields if you enjoy Woodsball. Our walk-on group didn't touch any airball, but we did play a hybrid Woodsball/Hyperball field. You don't return to the "car" area until lunchtime and then at the end of the day, so you'll have to carry your own paint/anythign else you require throughout the day with you from field to field. Not too big of a deal but some might view this an weakness. Unless you wanna soak your shoes, I'd avoid compound. It's a decent setup and everything, but you have to walk through a river/steam that's about a foot deep to get to your starting area. Might not be the best choice at the beginning of the day as it can ruin the rest of your experience there.

Players - PEVs walk-ons seems more advanced than the other fields I've played on. There's a fair mix of people renting guns, and ones who have their own, but there weren't many who seemed like it was their first time out. If you're new to the sport I'd recommend trying to get a larger group together (I think it's 20+ or so) This will allow you to play on your own field separate from the walkons, as they can be fairly advanced and the pace can be intimidating for first-timers. There were a fair amount of wipers - something you'll experience on every field, but if the REFs were more on point it wouldn't have been so easy for em... moving on.

Refs - Refs seemed pretty clueless the entire day. They'd walk off and chat it up when they should be watching people for hits. Some of the fields are quite large - time would expire and there would still be people out on the field playing because they failed to continue blowing the whistle to signal the end of the game. Teams were unbalanced throughout most of the day. Refs attempted to do multiple counts throughout the day to keep things even but it didn't help much - at least they tried. On a plus side they did keep the games going fairly quickly without any unnecessary downtime.

Facilities - A decent onsite proshop. They fill 30/45 tanks as well as c02 from the main shop (basically in the center of all the fields and right next to where the cars are parked.

Food - They've got hotdogs for lunch - they're $2.50 a piece...might wanna bring your own sandwich or something as they were pretty well done. Gatorade/Water for $2.50 as well (bring your own cooler with some water)

Strengths: Nice selection of fields, friendly walk-on players, quick pace between games that allowed you to refill but didn't allow for a whole lot of sitting around wasting time. People working on the proshop were friendly and helpful.

Weaknesses: Price - field paint is expensive, food is fairly reasonable but I recommend bringing your own water/drinks, all day nitro is $13 (indiv fills for $3/5 for 3000/4500). Refs did a pretty horrible job the entire day...weren't nearly enough to accommodate the 35vs35+ games they put together for the walk-ons. Teams were unbalanced throughout most of the day. No bridge to cross over the Compound river (seriously...?)

Conclusion: Despite the weakness I listed, I'd still recommend PEVs for people looking for an "advanced" walk-on experience. You're gonna be playing against alot of electro's with fast rates of fire - not an experience you wanna subject a beginner to. I'd go back but next time I'll be bringing my own paint and food though.

It's fairly easy to get to. Remember on the dirt road to stay on Gant Lane. On that fork in the forest, take a left. You should then see the sign.
Review: Before you begin reading, I just want to let you know that I'm not biased, as this is my first field. I think that my review is written fairly, and you don't think so you can post in the comments section in a mature and civilized fashion. That being said, let's get on with it...

Safety: I'd say this field is pretty safe. The velocity is 290 fps, and they strictly enforce it. They also require a barrel condom, which is a plus. The only problem was that once or twice I had my mask off and other kids had their barrel covers off, which is a bad combination if you know paintball. The refs caught it, but they didn't seem to look around that everybody had their cover on always. Like I said before, though, the field seems very safe.

Fields: They have a vast selection of fields. According to their site, they have 5 woodsball fields, 2 concept fields, 1 hyperball, and 3 airballs. I like all of their fields alot. In my opinion, the coolest field is The Compound. It is a field situated in the deep woods. It has a huge river running through the middle. It also has towers on each side of the river for some close combat and I guess what you would call "sniping", although you can't really snipe in paintball. The field selection seems to be very good compared to other fields (Hogback in particular). The trails to the fields themselves are very muddy even when it's dry, which is kind of weird. They were also very icy, which caused our group to have to take another way which was considerably longer.

Hours of Operation: It's open only on Sundays and Saturdays, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Weekends only doesn't matter to me, as I am in school during the week. In the summer, Pev's is also open on Wednesday.

Prices: The prices are a tad higher than other fields. The prices are on the site ( http://www.agpaintballgames.com/index.html ), and I don't want to waste space posting them here. It is $18 for entry if you have your own marker.

Rules: The rules are pretty standard, barrel condoms required, 290 FPS. There is also a surrender rule, where you can say surrender but you aren't required to. This is mainly to be nice to the noobs with their Ions running on straight CO2 (I actually saw this once at Pev's). I also think that splitting up the groups based on gun/skill helps prevent a bunch of team players with DM7's destroying a bunch of noobs with Tippmanns and Spyders.

Services: They have techs that will work on your gun for free. The problem with it, is that they aren't factory certified. If the marker company finds that out, they can void your warranty even if the guy installed the part perfectly. I'd say go to Pev's pro shops, as they are all certified in guns. You have to ask your tech if he is certified on a certain model gun, but they will always have somebody certified for every type of gun. They also give out hot chocolate in the winter if you are cold. Another service discussed below is food. You can buy hot dogs, chips, Gatorade, regular and diet soft drinks. Not surprisingly, the food is insanely overpriced. I'd recommend to pack a bag lunch.

Proshop: I haven't had any experiences as I rented, but they seemed pretty nice to me. The proshop seemed to be operated by teams that were sponsored there (sponsorship deals between teams and fields normally include a term where the team has to come and work for the field as a ref or a tech). I would definitely bring my gun to a Pev's proshop (There's one in Sterling) than let them work on it. Plus, they would void the warranty, and the proshop has manufacturer-certified techs that would be able to fix my gun and work on it the way it was meant to be done, not to trash the field guys or anything.

Staff: This one guy who did the safety briefing was a real **** (I think he's the owner). I don't think he realized that after paying $50 to be at his field it would be nice if the staff wouldn't yell at us, considering we pay his salary. Other than that, the staff was very nice.

Refs: I have heard people complaining about the refs feeling intimidated by players who are sponsored by Pev's, but I can tell you that this isn't the case. The ref I had was a reall y nice guy who knew alot about guns, so I asked him what marker I should get. I also thought they did a good job of keeping people from getting bonus-balled and shot when they were out. They called me out when I got a hopper hit. They quickly screamed "let him out, hopper hit!" which I thought was good, considering I was out of paint on a tippmann 98 (I was dry-firing to hold them back) and the 2 guys I was firefighting with had an EGO and an upped Ion.

Players: Everybody was really nice, with the exception of a few Ion owners (you have those types at every field). Overall, everybody was fine to play with,

Facilities: The facility itself wasn't very nice, it was in the garage of a house. The floor was concrete and the whole place wasn't very clean.

Food: I haven't tried the food, but I'd pack a lunch as it's expensive as hell. You can buy hot dogs, chips, Gatorade, regular and diet soft drinks.

Food is good/ we can fill all types of tanks/players have to attend a safety briefing to play/play per day is $18(with own gear), $55 with rental and 500 rounds, or $35 with rental and 100 rounds. Also we can do special private groups and birthday parties so email ag paintball for info on those. field limit on chrono is 290 if you have not chronoed your gun you can not play. we are open from 10:30am to 3:30pm in the winter and summer is 9:30am to 4:30pm all the rest of the year

Hogback mountain, and that's it!
Review: I've played here three times and intend on going back very soon!

*The Refs are great, they really help with the game, unlike V.A.G., there refs sucked.(thats why V.A.G. isn't in buisness anymore!!!)
*They have a safety briefing like every 30-45 minutes, they only allow you to use barrel bags/condoms, no barrel plugs! Which is good, because the barrel bags are much safer, and have less chance of shooting out of the gun if misfired!
*They have a pretty large staging area!
*The fields Are awesome, great creative setups and lots of cool material to play with.
*The proshop is well kept and you can rent EGOs and Intimidators.
*The rules are standard and are not hard to follow.
*They have a concession/snack stands.

Overall this field is my personal favorite, you always feel welcome here no matter what kind of player you are! ( as long as your not a cheater type). I recommend this field to anyone, so have fun and good luck!
