I am new to the Boise area, and wanted to get back into PB. The only managed field in the area is Splat. I figured I'd swing by there and play for the day. As a side note, I showed up with no gear, and alone.
The people behind the counter were nice, though they didn't seem to interested in dealing with me. Paid my $40 for rental and a bag of paint. Because I was alone, I was placed with a group of high schoolers who had never played before. We were shown the field, then told to go have fun. Thus, we were thrown into the area with 1 way of being able to play, kill their team before they kill you. There were no refs, which made it quite frustrating for me.
We basically played that way the whole day, since they didn't know of any other styles of games could be played, and because I was an outsider, didn't listen to me. Thus, you had small groups of around 4-6 players playing in the area. You couldn't get larger groups together, because the area is too small, and it got too crazy.
The worst part, they had no bandannas or markers of any sort, so there was no way to tell the two teams apart. That made moving around the sides to get behind the other group near impossible, because your team would be shooting at you too.
I tried to talk with some of the people that appeared to be regulars (Had their own gun/equip) but discovered very quickly that if you had rental gear, you were not worthy of talking to. It almost felt the same when talking with the people on the other side of the counter.
Over all it's a nice place, I like the indoor arena, though it's a bit small. The outdoor speedball arena was nice, but when I tried to play out there, it ended up being people geared for speedball vs. renters, which is not much fun at all. I prefer more woodsball, so the indoor was my preferred place to play, but got quite boring because no one recommended we play with different rules (Preditor/Pray, CTF, Aliens/Predators, etc.)
It can get a bit costly, though it wasn't too bad for me. I played most of the day, brought my own food/drink (which I recommend), and didn't use more than 1 bag (500ct) of paint. Though I am quite conservative.

Ontario Paintball Challenge - It's cheaper and they have better speedball fields. |

The staff at Splat is pretty cool, they're always willing to answer questions or help people with gun problems.
The indoor field is pretty cool, it's a mixture of speedball and scenario at the same time. They have a really nice speedball field outside on turf surrounded with nets.
The main issue with Splat is their pricing. It's $15 if you have your own equipment, $25 if you need to rent. They charge you $20 per person if you bring in paint. Since they sell their paint for $55 a case it's pretty ridiculous. Because of this it's pretty expensive to play there.
So overall I would give them a 6 because of how high their prices are. If you're willing to make a drive than I would recommend Ontario Paintball Challenge because it is much cheaper.| Last edited on Monday, March 10th, 2008 at 10:02 pm PST |

the field is GREAT!!!! it has an indoor fieldthat looks like a urban combat scenario and
outdoor speed ball airbunker feild. it has a fully loaded shop where you can literally get
an entire setup and any thing else you need. the staff are funny and friendly and might
come and ball it up a round or two with you. its open wensday through sunday and
monday and tuesday are open for large parties if you reserve it in advance. the safty is
alright its been getting better like enforcemet of barrel plugs when coming off the
field. they normally have refs out side but i dont know about inside cause i dont play
there but it still wouldnt matter because players there are honest. the types of players
range from pro or semi pros like sbk and ground control to just people out for the
weekend. the prices are included in their website and they have some snacks as well
like gatoraid and twix all in all an awsome place to go |

I've played renegade-ball, but other than that, I've never played at any other local field. |

Directions to the Field: |
Splat Paintball is located past the Boise Airport and just past the military base. Head down Gowen road, and it should be pretty easy to find. There's a sign that points to Splat. It is located in an old airplane hanger. |

I've only played at Splat Paintball twice over a period of a few months, but both times have been amazing. I'll tell you about my latest experience.
I gathered some friends together to play. Upon heading in, we paid. It was pretty steep. For one mask, unlimited air, field fee, and 1000 rounds, it added up to $80. The guy who checked us in (I think he was the manager) wasn't very friendly, but he was professional and got the job. No real complaints.
We readied our gear and headed to the indoor course. Wow, what a place to play! They had re-designed it since the last time I had been there. There were two rows of wooden structures set up to represent houses, one row on each side of the field. Between the two rows of houses, there were a bunch of cars. It sort of reminded me of an urban-combat situation. It was a rush to dive behind sedans, peek around corners, and snipe through windows. I didn't play in this field much, but a great course.
Next came the outdoor field. This is the speed-ball course, with inflatable bunkers. This is also the place where most of the pros play. Even though my humble Tippmann Model 98 isn't known for its bps, it was a trip playing here. My only complaint was that there was a large puddle of water in the middle of the field, which limited your movement options unless you were cool with getting soaked. Also, there was a fire hydrant in the middle of the field. All I can say is...what...??? I didn't care, though, it was so much fun playing here.
What makes this field so much fun, however, is the people. It's such a great enviroment, it feels like a family. The semi-pros and pros aren't egotistical (for the most part), and if you want some advice on your gear, game, or whatever, most of them will be happy to help you out. The amatuer players are pretty fun as well, and if you're a relatively new player (like I am) there are plenty of noobs to own up on. Plus, playing against the good players helps improve your game. Overall, a great mix of mediocre and advanced.
Another great element is the staff. A lot of them are nice and friendly, except that one guy who checked us in. He was definitely a good worker and everything, maybe he was just having a bad day. They're cool guys, though, and joke around with you and stuff.
As far as safety goes, it's a safe field that seems to be decently maintained. However, a lot of people didn't have barrel condoms/plugs on in the marked areas, and I didn't even have to sign a waiver (I didn't care, though). There weren't any refs as far as I could see, but at that field, the honor system is well respected, so there isn't any wiping, etc. going on.
Overall, a great field. The prices are spendy, but, hey, Splat Paintball is a great place to play, and I'm more than willing to shatter my wallet for the amazing time I had. I will return.| Last edited on Friday, March 9th, 2007 at 8:21 am PST |

This is a very impressive facility to play at. I say this having played on fields all across the nation.
The outdoor field is an Astroturf, tournament level airball field. The bunkers are well maintained, plentiful, and arranged well. There is a nice netted viewing area all along side the field with a 4500 PSI fill station. Two complaints: 1) there is absolutely no padding under this field, which is pretty thin. Consequently, it is a very hard surface for diving and sliding. 2) There is a freaking fire hydrant in the middle of the field.
The indoor field is roughly square and the field is played “corner-to-corner.” There are some building facades with doors and windows that serve as the primary source of cover. Dividing the field at the center are a row of cars that also provide decent cover. Less useful are the piles of tires, which have so many gaps that paintballs easily fly through. Thankfully these are situated towards the back of each side, so you can move up and avoid these bunkers. Like most scenario fields, the key to winning is to push out wide as fast as possible and control the firing angles. The floor is rough sand and packed very hard which is nice because it tends not to get everywhere. Some areas are very slippery due to saturation from paint oils. There are very nice “dead boxes” in each corner to facilitate getting off the playing field when you are hit. The entire field is moderately, but evenly lit.
The staging area has bins of clean cloth rags and plenty of squirt bottles.
The paint prices, $55/case, are very respectable. The rest of the proshop is well stocked and staffed by knowledgeable and helpful people. The check-in/registration process is also very organized.
Safety at this facility was a huge concern to me. When you walk into the entrance, you actually walk into the staging area for the indoor field. I saw at least 10 loaded and aired-up guns without barrel socks, mostly in the hands of players. Thankfully you only have to walk about 10 steps before you can pass through another set of doors that take you into the proshop/ registration/ alternate staging area. Even in here, with the staff present, there were individuals with loaded guns sans barrel cover. I was horrified. Furthermore, the entire day I played, a referee never once came out to supervise the indoor field – where most of the new players constantly were taking off their masks. Other problems that came from the lack of supervision: 1) People shoot hot (indoor speed is 260) and no one enforces the chrono speed. 2) Cheaters – this is a huge problem here. 3) Players repeatedly go into the dead box and use the areas as bunkers even though they are obviously off limits for game play. 4) Again, no one is checking players as they come off the field for barrel covers making the entrance and staging area completely unsafe. I actually left my mask almost the entire time I was inside the building.
The outdoor field seemed to have many of the same problems. Again, no ref was present throughout the day. Thankfully, most of the players here are more advanced and for the most part put on barrel covers before exiting the field. Unfortunately, this didn’t seem to translate into better personal safety habits - after each game, and I mean every game, people were removing their masks ON THE FIELD. This wasn’t just as they were walking off, rather, individuals would remain on the field and talk about the previous game, goof-off, and simply socialize without masks. I don’t know if what I witnessed is simply the accepted culture at this field, or if this field attracts more than it’s fair share of dim-witted individuals. During the time I was here, I saw 2 arguments escalate into physical contact.
Having said all of that, I still had a good time playing here because of the quality of the facility. I would certainly hope to see more field oversight from the management.
Until then, when I come here, I’ll just leave my mask on the entire time.

Well, This field has been around for awhile, and as everyone knows, Kurt has lost ownership Yay!!!!! Well, the new management is very well done, it's laid back, while still retaining a professional aire. The speedball field is incredible, they bought a set of bunkers from the nppl ( I think it was nppl) ( st them back 26 grand) and it's all on turf. The indoor field is cleaned every monday, and has been newly redesigned. It's a city street facade running from corner to corner with cars down the center, the angles from the back need to be fixed, but if you move up it works out.
This field is growing strong under new management, and has really turned around. |

well in the past couple months splat has made a complete turn around. The new owners deffinately know how to run a field right. Now they have atleast 6-7 highend gun choices as well as low end. The store has a whole new feeling. The prices are much better now, and so is the service. The field is just an example of the owners ambition. Before it was a dirt (with gravel) field with crappy dirty bunkers. Now the field is turfed, and they got the eclipse field from tampa bay's nppl. On sundays be ready for the best competition for hundreds of miles.
In conclusion, if your near boise this is the best and only field to play at. |

when i started to play at this field a cold months ago it was still under the ownership of kurt. the manager(josh) after a while bought out kurt. josh is one of the coolest people i have met. he has given us great deals that blow away anything that ive seen from kurt at aktion zone. he has even helped fix my gear for FREE...(paintballers favorite 4 letter word) if you are in the area this is the place that you should play. they just finished the new indoor areana today and it looks awesome.
the only bad thing about it is its reff less. reffs arent there to stop cheaters, but if you play with an honest group then it will be ok
conclusion: this is the best paintball place in the boise caldwell area and it definanitly needs some looking into by any player!! |
