Hotshots and Bethel Park both in Newport News - Both fields are alright but compared to Pirate Paintballs field they need work.
You can tell the staff at Pirate Paintball took the time to make the field enjoyable to everyone, from the newest of players to the most experienced player. The refs have several senarios that will build team work and challenge players. While playing any scenario my team could advance rapidly because of the natural and man made bunkers. The prices here are outstanding, the best I have seen anywhere.

This was a great paintball field. I went there for my first time on Saturday for a little rec play and to watch the young guns tourney.
The fields were top notch. The woods ball field had many natural and man made bunkers including spools, tires, plywood forts, picket fences, pallets, felled trees, stacks of firewood and the like. This field was good and large with many good lanes and places to be "sneaky". My only pet peeve with this field is that there are small mounds on the ground in places that I fell over and tripped along a few times. But that isn't that big of a deal.
The bunkerball field was also a great field but lacked some of the good features of some other fields I have played. I really like the bunkers and layout, especially the zipper and the snake. I loved that zipper. It was the most fun bunker on the entire field. Only thing I didn't like was that the field was HARD with a capital Q. There was a hard clay behind most of the bunkers that I found out bad things about after a very painful knee slide in. It even ripped right through my pants.
The airball field looked great but we were there on a tourney day so I didn't get to play it but I hope to next time I go up to pirate.
Overall the pricing was very fair. 10 for all day air, 10 to get in and 10 for byop. They also, every now and then, have special days. Because we were there on a tourney day all the paint was at equal price with the cheapest thing they had. I have been told that on some days they have free HPA fills and Free admission but you must use the field paint. I find that to be a good bargin. Also they have some good group rates.
The staff and refs were all great guys. The refs called very fair the entire day. They, unlike other places I have been, actually got in on the field and watched to check for outs and do paintchecks. They were also helping the people that needed it and knew enough about the guns people were shooting to give some advice to minor problems. The staffing was as good as the refing. The guy filling the tanks busted my buddies macro fitting and charged him to fix it. But that is only minor. Other than that they were helpful and knowlegeable about the guns and could fix what needed to be.
There wasn't really too much at the field, just a shack to buy paint and air and fill out registrations and a port-o-john. But it was enough. I felt very satisfied and I plan to come back many times in the future.
I played Pirate Paintball for the first time on New Year's Day. Appreciate the staff working on a holiday so the rest of us could have fun. There is a speedball field which looked nice, but I only played the woods field. There were plenty of bunkers, mostly man-made, including a nice snake in front of one of the forts. The field is big enough that the opponent is pretty much out of view at the start of the game, leaving lots of opportunity for hiding and maneuver. Even the radio-equipped, full-camo guys didn't last much longer than anyone else.
The shop is minimal - nothing but the basics on hand - but the owner, Chad, is more than willing to get whatever you need with a day or two notice. In fact, he couldn't be friendlier. He welcomed us to his field and made sure my daughter (who had only played once before) had working equipment and knew how to use it. When refilling my tank, he noticed the O-ring was cracked and replaced it for free without even mentioning it. Granted it's not an expensive item, but the point is that that's great customer service. The other players were friendly too. Handshakes from the opposing side after almost every game.
On the down side, it sometimes took 15-20 minutes to get a new game started. Maybe it was hard to get refs to come in on a holiday. Also (a minor point) the parking area is pretty small, and mostly along the dirt road leading to the field - can be a muddy mess.
All in all it was a good place to play. The people are the most important part of any field, and I'd be happy to play there again
Masterblasters-psh doesnt compare, worthless to this one. Will only go there to play tournaments.
Ok, this place is the bomb. Chad is the coolest person to know and will always help you out in any way possible. They have now gotten a filler that can get 4500 fills on nitro tanks. I dont know anywhere else that does that. youll not be sorry if you come to this field. great for the novice to tourny player.
Definitely worth the drive form chesapeake (thanks to the bypass and new rout 17)!
Excellent staff and refs with total customer service. Woods-ball field provides many different strategies for the novice and noobie. People were very friendly and quickly set up games of speed-ball and woods-ball. prices were reasonable. Look forward to many returns!
Pirate paintball is the only place I'll play. The woods course is addictive. Speedball and Air feild are sweet too. The staff treat you like your a good friend. The prices are great. Constant improvements and upgrades make every trip a new adventure. A lot of fun and definitely worth the drive. This place is really hopping lately. Tons of great competition.
Pirate Paintball is worth the drive from Virginia Beach. The owner Cad is a great guy as well as the rest. There is a great woods course and speed ball. With the new upcoming urban course this will make Pirate Paintball the best around. If you are looking for a excellent course with excellent service you’ll find it at Pirate.I encourage beginners and experienced to come check it out! Military? you are in good hands
master blasters- pirates is way better and better organized with tourneys
This field is awesome. The people are friendly and cool and they do very good buisness. The paint is cheap and very good and I like it alot more the master blasters which is the other field I have played at. Airball field setup is awesome and all in all this is the best field to play at.
This is a great field. The person who runs the place is a teacher at a high school so there are always people out there. I have been there twice, once on my birthday and the 26th. On the 26th they had a thing where there was no field, air, or rental fee, you just bought paint. They play every weekend. The next big event is January 28th. They hold tournament's. They have woods ball, air ball, and speed ball fields. They are planing on making a urban field. The website is www.piratepaintball.i8.com.
Pirate is a really good field and is worth the extra 20 min. to drive from Masterblasters. you get to play lots of games and the owner is very helpful. If you forgot something he will usually let you borrow one of his. The tournaments he has are great and easy to understand. Also does very well with refereeing the tournaments.
