Review: Ive played at this field for my whole life, know it by heart, even reffed there for a while, i know what im talking about.NEW PRICES 18 for walkons, 15 for perferred customers. all food raised $.50 to $1 US dollars

Pros: lots of people depending on weather
Proshop and rental services(pro carbines,98's,timmies,angels,pev's egos)
co2 and comp air refill stations + an air truck that may be servicing other areas of the field that are farther away from the main staging area.
people using rentals get new guns/tanks via 4 wheeler if there gun is broken/tank run out.
water coolers for when its hot placed at locations close to fields
Great airball field
Great woodsball
Ok hyperball ( almost no grass anymore)
If u get to know the reff's well u can get some free stuff
Mandatory safety briefing
tues/wen/thurs open during summer

Cons: Refs are mostly >20 yrs of age making them a little less concerned about other people's safety and more concerned about the next tourny and thier paycheck
can become very muddy, bring boots if its rained recently
road to pevs can become muddy as well, bring a van/jeep/suv
no real restrooms, thats ok if u like port'o potties
airsmith on site
some players with higher end guns can be not-so-friendly
hotdogs, chips, candy, and drinks

Review: Let me first admit that I am a beginner, so this review will come from a newcomer to the sport. Also, I prefer woodsball (being out in nature is a major attraction to the sport) so I will only review PEVS from a woodsball perspective.

That said, I have generally enjoyed the number of times I have played at PEVS. Overall, I have found the experience to be fun, exciting and have had some pretty incredible firefights. I recommend PEVS to any player without hesitation.

There are generally a large number of judges who care about safety and do their jobs. I've never had a problem with a judge ignoring a paint check call and any time I have asked for help with my gun or advice on a field, they have gone out of their way to help. KUDOS for the judges, PEVS.

However, refs could use to be a bit older. It can be pretty difficult for a 14 year old kid to tell a 20 something JACKASS to go to the deadzone because he was hit. Particularly when the older guy doesn't want to listen. I once hit a guy, called for a paintcheck, and the ref called him dead. I watched the guy walk off field until out of the ref's sight, wipe off the paint, and walk right back on. I about unloaded half a hopper on him until he finally gave up cheating.

By the way, the refs ARE good about keeping players from overshooting during the normal course of a game. Yeah, I know I overshot that guy in the example above, but wouldn't you have also?

The fields are awesome, although the ones closest to the PRO SHOP are repetitive. PEVS has "compound" a seriously intense warfield with bunkers, towers and a creek that you need to cross to get at the other team. This causes games to be paced well, and require ballers to be cautious.

I primarily play as a walk-on and walk-ons do not appear to receive the same field priority that groups receive. Even the field refs will get disgruntled about not being able to get walk on groups to the better fields. (NOTE: this mainly occurs when the fields are crowded, and during the summer months).

PEVS is a hard field for beginners. As a beginner, I have found it difficult to play against guys totally outfitted with all the best gear. Refs are savvy enough to try to divide teams so that firepower is equal. Still, this can make learning pretty difficult when you are new and killed almost immediately. I know, its probably because I suck, but I'd like to learn.

PEVS would really benefit from a beginner only group like Hogback allows.

The people at PEVS are generally cool, with helpful refs and pretty polite players. When players follow the rules, paintball is awesome. When people cheat or turn into jackasses, the game can suck. Particularly in the summer, I noticed a number of rednecks who completely ignored the rules, ignored judges and sought to start fights with players over disputes. I once shot a guy who was out of bounds. A ref was not around, so I called him out and told him to walk back to the dead-zone. He threw his gun down and charged me, telling me that "[he] doesn't have to follow those rules." Of course, the idiot had thrown down his gun, so I just started firing my Spyder at him as fast as I could, aiming at his neck and crotch, until he backed off in pain. I reported him to a judge who promised me he would "talk to" the guy. The judge didn't do much of anything and the guy and his two friends walked to a different field after challenging my three friends, wife, and I to a fight in the parking lot. Unbelievable. These sort of situations make the playing experience very unsatisfying.
(NOTE: we basically ignored the juvenile challenge).

Buy your own gun and mask. The rentals are junk, shoot crooked and the masks are scratched and fog in seconds. If you are lucky enough to get a rental gun that works the whole day, you will be seriously outclassed by other players. Invest the money in a marker...any marker is better. After our first time at PEVS, we immediately went out and bought gear. Our second time, with Kingman markers was far more enjoyable because we could actually hit our targets. FYI, buy from ebay for serious discounts.

In sum, PVS is a great field, close to DC, great for groups and fairly good for walk-ons. Its hard for beginners and could benefit from beginner-only games. The refs could also be a bit older and enforce the rules more zealously. However, they all seem to care, are worried about safety and try their best.

Hogback Mountain- (I won't go there again after playing at PEV'S)
Review:
This was my first time at PEV'S, and I was very happy with the time I spent there.

Most reviews are very positive about PEV'S, and this one is no different. I took a few family members and friends up to play for the day at PEV'S, and I was skeptical about the field at first, because of some reviews. After leaving at the end of the day, I can surely say that my time and money was well spent there, and I won't go play anywhere else when I come back up to Northern Virginia.

First, the Pros:

1) The woods fields were AWESOME. I am NOT a fan of speedball at all, and I got to play woods fields from the first game to the last. Great field designs, too.
The best field we played was "The Compound", which were two small "villages" separated by a small river. We had our best games of the day there, and I really liked the setup. Towers, bunkers, pillboxes, and plenty of room to maneuver.

2) THE MILITARY DISCOUNT!! I know, it may seem like penny pinching, but to have someone appreciate what a soldier does by giving him a break on field costs is always a plus in my book. Active duty plays for $8 (with your own gear), which is great. Thanks PEV'S.

3) Good safety briefing, and quick Chrono. We saved a ton of time getting all the players briefed, and out ready to play. That's always good, because that means more games!

4) The age separation factor. They took all the walk-ons under 17 and made a group that played together, and one group where just about everyone was over 17. That's great because I don't usually like to play with younger kids. I do think that 17 is a bit too old, because at 15 I could probably compete with the adults. 15 and under should be a better group, for the "kids" players.

6) Lunch went great, and we filled our tanks and got food really quickly.... no waiting around for a long time for a hotdog. They were ready, and we walked up and asked for food, we got it right away, and got ready to go out for the afternoon games.

Now, the Cons:

1) If it is raining, or has just rained.... don't even bother. It was pretty dry when we went, and there was a lot of mud on the trails to the gameplay fields. The fields themselves would be a quagmire of mud after a rain. The trails would benefit from a good buit of gravel, or at least wooden planks over the thick mud areas. A minor gripe, but a valid one.

2) Please, upgrade the latrine (bathroom) options. There were three Port-A-Johns, but one was locked. There were a ton of people there, and more coming every hour... and the wait to get into a John was killer. And after a hundred people just used the John, it was difficult to get in and out of, you know what I mean?

3) If you didn't know prior to getting there, be prepared to buy a barrel cover. NOT a plug, but a cover, or "condom". I had my own cover, but some guys I was with didn't so they had to buy one from the Proshop. If I didn't bring my cover, I don't think they had the proper cover to fit my Flatline barrel, because I saw several players with a cover too small for their Flatline, trying to force it over the end.

4) Using a sticker to show who went to chrono and who didn't, really didn't mean anything. One guy I talked to, and I asked if he was going to chrono, he said "No, I'll just say my sticker fell off." No refs noticed. Again, in the afternoon after lunch players are told to chrono but some just don't. As a random safety measure, refs should have a hand-held chrono to randomly chrono players as they enter a game. If you're playing fair, you won't have anything to worry about. And what about the players who have their stickers REALLY fall off? It's something that needs to be brought up.

5) Some of the "dead zones" had netting up that wasn't going to stop any paintballs. Players would simply lift up the netting to go in and out, rendering anyone in the zone vulnerable to a stray ball. (At the Compound) That netting needs to be secured, and refs need to penalize players who are too lazy to walk the 10 feet to get to the enterance, and simply lift up the protective net. Sometimes a stiff breeze would blow the net up in the same way, and it was the wall that faces the field.

6) Times to WEAR and NOT WEAR the goggles were vague, and sometimes confusing. Sometimes, people would be yelling to put goggles on, but some refs and other players were walking without goggles. Which is it? A few times, a ref would yell for goggles on, without their own goggles on! I understand the rule, it just needs to be made clearer when we CAN and CAN'T have goggles off.

Look, if you're looking to play in the NOVA area, PEV'S is the place to go, no question. Hogback is decent, but just can't hold a candle to this place. People will always complain about refs, and cheaters, and prices... but that's life. You'll get that wherever you go. But the pluses here are waaaaaayyyy to much not to outweigh the petty minuses I listed above. If those issues could get addressed, PEV'S could be the best field I've ever played on.

I live in the Tennessee/Kentucky area (Stationed at Ft Campbell), but my family lives in the NOVA area. Whenever I drive home for a long weekend, we'll be back at PEV'S.

You can click on the "Hogback" review board, and see what I wrote about that field. After playing both, PEV'S will get my business every time.

Review: I was there for the Automags.org AO-VA event. It was my first time playing and I absolutely loved it. The fields were great, though a little muddy. However, it had rained the previous night so that's expected. I also cannot tell you how incredibly friendly the staff was and we had 2 private Refs for the whole day and they were as nicer than we could have asked for. It was a great day and I hope I'll be able to play there again someday.

Hyperball field
My favorite field of the whole day. The field is kind of falling apart but that made it more interesting. It was also the muddiest field, though. Be here after periods of rain. Very messy.
9.5/10

Sup Air Ball
Amazing. Pevs takes excellent care of their Air Ball fields because of the tournaments they hold almost every weekend. Although the only way to get onto these fields is with a private group, that's how we got to play. The field has the freshest grass I've ever played on, it's just an all around great field.
10/10

Rock Garden
I was kind of disappointed by this field. It was kind of fun, I guess. This field is definitely made for large groups of like 20+, on each side. We had an 8v8 and it was rather boring. The field's too big.
6/10

Dodge City
I was also kind of disappointed by this field. It had so much potential, well I guess the lack of fun was more on our part. We had very few people on our team who knew this field well but the other side knew everything about this field. In short, we got owned. But the field looks very well done, I just wish we could have lasted longer.
8/10

That's all we played on. We did Hyperball like 8 times, Sup Air 3 times, Rock Garden twice, Dodge twice and then we left. I wish we had played on the Compound, but all in all it was a great day.

10/10

Review: So far Ive played at pevs twice this month and here is my review.

The parking lot is decent and is covered with gravel. Price to get in all day is $15.

I had a very good time. Each feild had its own play style and was unique. The refs were nice enough and provided paint checks when asked. The playing enviroment was enjoyable and the teams were kept even the best they could skill wise. There has also been water near the fields that is refilled throughout the day. Although when a group of 30 people come to a field thirsty the cooler becomes empty fast. So bring water with you aswell.

My complaints are HPA prices seemed little to much. 68/4500 cost $5 to get a fill, so the price can add up if you tend to shoot alot. Little too much down time between games and took a bit to get the day started and teams formed (safety breifing at 9:30am and dont get first game in until around 10:15-10:30).

My fill nipple was leaking when I got my tank filled in the morning. They didnt have the right size oring to fix it so the guy behind the desk used teflon tape and put a temporary fix on it. Staff was very helpful.

I give Pevs a 8/10. They could work on there prices and time taken to get playing.

Review: Good courses and helpful staff.Good rental guns.Has a good sized range with a bunch of chronographs.Just about everything there is was great except the prices for food and drinks and all the cheating!!! I got shot at three feet away twice ,which is not allowed at this field, but the ref didn't see him shoot me that close so I had to sit out the game just like I had been normally hit. That made me really mad.I saw several people wiping paint , that made it really hard and frustrating for an honest player to stay in the game because your enemies pretty much made themselves invincible!!!The speed ball course and the village were my favorite. We played at pevs as a group for a birthday party and had a blast.Even though there was alot of cheating, its not really pevs fault although it wouldn't hurt to have more refs.Id go back there in a heart beat!

Review: This field is the "bomb diggity"
It is top notch and has all the qualities of a paintball field. I'm not trying to put down hogback but this field is a lot better. I've been playing here for almost a year and I'm never leaving.

Pros:
Friendly Staff
Pro Shop (stocked)
Organized air fills
Organized concessions stand
Large staging area
Safety Briefing every 30 min
All Types of paint
Organized Chrono
Large Fields
Discounts if your gun is bought from Pevs
Free stickers
Lots of parking

Cons:
Warm water in jugs on the fields
I got stung by a bee in one of their towers once

Best fields:
!!!Compound!!!
Village
Rock Garden
Dodge City
Hyperballs

Overall 10 out of 10

EDIT
Hyperball has been closed for the 2005 spring season for construction,
Also again the staff at pevs is first rate, My friend and I were walking with a ref and this kid on the path couldnt breathe so they called it in on their radio and a first aid crew on ATV's were there in seconds, kudos to PEVS.
EDIT
They just put in a bridge on compound for you guys that dont want to have a chance of dropping ur marker in the water, good luck getting across it

Review: First off I would like to say that this feild is the best in Northern Virginia, perhaps even the best in all of Virginia.

pros:
great fields with tons of space.
you can bring your own paint
a proshop there
they serve food
good experienced players are there(like me) to help the newcomers
no 20 ft rule ( some may veiw this as a con but I like it!)
discounts if you bought your gun @ pevs
experienced staff
saftey is stressed a lot
you must use a barrel cover!
15 entry fee
woods and airball/speedball
huge parking lot

cons:
the refs can be "lazy" sometimes( i know they are doing they're best)
prices can get high especially for food
the rental guns always have problems
can get crowded cause it rocks so much
you do get the occasional cheater or bad egg but that is people for ya
the proshop staff fixes minor problems but they won't fix majors leaks or breaks
the N2 line can be heavy if there is only 1 dude @ the proshop
chrono line can get long also

I have been playing there for 1 year. I go every weekend and enjoy it cause it makes your day fun. some if not most of the cons are week-related meaning that it varies from day-to-day. Overall Pevs is WAY better than Hogback. i love it

Review: I'll start off by saying I dislike PEVS. Now I don't have to rant much.

The Reason ? I asked after the saftey briefing the bunkering rule to which I was told
"I'll let you all figure that out in the field amongst youselves."

I'll never bring my son there, or any new player. Just not the right attitude.

I did a private group there once, which I must say was 100% awesome. That is about the only way I will ever play at PEVS. They did a great job with it.

Walk On Cons :

Paint Wiping - I saw so many people wiping paint it was frustrating. Once, with my 4 friends we had a walk on with our team wipe paint 4 times after the opposing team shot him, we shot him ourselves. The opposing team member actually thanked me after the game....

Theft - I actually had a case of paint stolen and a few extra pods. Not the type of players I want to be around.

Refs - Do they exist ? I can't tell you how many times I yelled for a paint check on myself only to have the opposing team tell me to go ahead and stand up so they could check. they really need more Refs.

Prices - Well, they are PEVS typical prices. Atleast they don't jack up the prices on paint etc. for buying at the field.

Service - My buddy had a problem with his Angel, not a soul in the shop could help him. This is good and bad, atleast they didn't try to fudge it, they simply admitted they didn't know.

Walk On Pros :

They serve food.

General :

Fields - they vary from super large to large. I played 4 games, where myself and 3 friends walked for 15 minutes and never saw another person. That was with a 25 on 25 game.

Equipment - It's a good mix of players renting and players with their own equipment. You may not see a host of Autocockers, but you got a good lot of Intimidators, Angels, and other lower priced decent markers out there.

Giving them a 5 just because they serve food, have decent fields and don't jack up prices just because it's a field.

Wayne

Review: Pevs is the best field ever, it has the best fields ever, the refs are ok, but the staff is awsome, everyone there is freindly, you can bring your own equipment and they never run out of co2 or nitrogen to fill your tanks, they always have cheap sales, the food is priced pretty good, the most expensive thing is a red bull for $3.00, hot dogs are $2.00 and they have a bunch of other food for $1.00, and it is only $15.00 and its worth evey penny, they have over 20 fields and you play about 16-18 the whole day, and they always have free water for you after every couple games. this is the best field ever
