View Full Version : Spyder XTRA vs. MP3 Black Dragun

I am a new paintballer looking for some advice.

I had been introduced to paintball awhile back, when my neighbor got into it and got his first gun. Couple years later, I've recently decided to take the next step and get my own.

My question is, to start off, which would be a better gun, in your opinion, for my scenario.

I want a nice good gun, low mantinence, and I'd like to have a nice range on it, but would be able to handle must situtations.

I have it narrowed down to Spyder XTRA or MP3 Bottomline...unless anyone else has any suggestions.

If you get a better idea. I am looking to spend either $150 on just the gun or $200 on package.

Thanks

check out the kingman forum I think there is a thread with your anwser...

I'd go with a spyder Compact, and put a lapco bigshot on it

just get a vl200 a 12 oz. tankm and whatever mask you want////

BUT IT"S UP TO YOU... i dont think you should do what I would do... do what YOU want to do

If you mean the M3 Black Dragun (not the MP3, .mp3's are music files ), then I would go for the dragun over the xtra. Here's why. They're essentially the same, but for one thing

The xtra - mile-long trigger pull

the dragun - electro trigger, very very light and quick! :agree:

he could do a trigger job :)

yeah... he could... and the shortest he could get it would still be MILES longer and POUNDS heavier than the electro grip on the dragun. I knew you were going to say that!

you're just being a regular smart aleck, now aren't you? :P

maybe he doesn't NEED either paintball gun, but he asked which is better, and the dragun is.

maybe he SHOULD get an MP3 player... but if he wanted to, then he wouldn't have posted that in a PAINTBALL FORUM!!!!

I think that regardless of what he plays, a short trigger pull is VERY nice to have, because in woodsball you sometimes have to OPEN up on your opponent, and when those times come, i would rather have the light tap of the dragun trigger as opposed to a HUGE trigger pull of a spyder.

now quit being a smart-aleck on my threads!:finger: ;)

now quit being a smart on my threads!:finger: ;)

he also asked if not, what would we SUGGEST..

i no, your use to going back and fourth with the average members,,,,, my IQ is a little higher

your first shouldnt be electric

BourneKiller

yeah, i am used to going back and forth w/ normal members... and your IQ is higher... but not by extreme amounts! ;)

and the point the an electro shouldn't be a first gun? well.. that's debatable. Right now I would think with my wallet, and the dragun is the best bang for my buck.

If I had unlimited money, then I would start w/ a phantom... and move up. But I don't have unlimited money, and I didn't start out w/ a pump, and I'm fine! :P

okay, i'm leaving, i am going to go out w/ some girls. :D

Oh, and the shaving arms thing? Well... no, i'm just blonde. But I did shave my legs once, it was a bet from these 4 beautiful babes. Me and my friend Andrew lost, so they shaved our chests and legs (then rubbed us down w/ Victoria's Secret Love Spell lotion)

so it was worth it!! wow

now that's one more, and I'll put up the rest some other time. I'm tired.

wow, those girls were babes! :love:Think Victoria's Secret Dream Angels or whatever... definately models!

oh shut up you!

now Ebon... come on, you know me! I like girls, just like you, can't we just get along? :D

So you're supposed to laugh, turn green with envy about the babe that I'm taking out, and then tell me what your avatar is all about. I'm curious too. :)

The avatar is my own custome redone version of the Led Zeppelin box set cover. It's normally over a blood red field, but so many people are used to seeing the Paradise Lost avatar black and white having a color avatar would throw them, so I filtered and edited the image a bit to be black and white and contrast enough to show the image well.

All my avatars are always band ones...of course, this is my second av in two years so....

M3....Oi...The shipment listing was M3PBL so...Nevermind.

First, I know about the electro trigger...and that was a big factor...but I will need to save paintballs....yet, the fact that I could unload a rack in a tough spot makes a big difference.

Second, I may look into the Compact, but one thing it is missing is a nice ol' expansion chamber, and since I will be playing a lot of woodsball and since I live around Maryland Sept-March it can dip into low 30's....And the LapCo bigshot (As accurate as it is) is still kinda loud compared to a Teardrop.

-----------------
Edit: I don't think I am going to get the Dragun, the way I see it is that it IS a great gun, but the fact that it chews up so much paint and that it obviously should be upgraded (hopper, barrel, and constant batteries) that it is not the one for me. Course, after this little gun, I am gonna be saving up for a nice ol' Impulse ^_^.

And I never understood the "electros waste paint" thing. I figure you just take the paint you are intending on shooting out on the field. If you want to play five games and have 1000 rounds, no one is making you take 800 rounds and shoot them all the first game. Just go out there with your standard hopper...you can't shoot more than it holds if you don't have pods, right? You want to learn fire discipline? Put 50 rounds in your hopper and go out. It's a great way to learn to make shots count with an electronic gun.

great quote of Ebon's... Oh, and you don't need a big ol' expansion chamber, you only need an ANTI-SIPHON TUBE!!! X-chambers are out of style man, they don't work as well as the money you pay for them suggest they should. Get an anti-siphon and a regulator. And besides.... you can buy a black dragun w/ a decent reg, but the best reg you can buy on a spyder is a freaking crappy female bottomline mounted one (like on the shutter). Oh... I have a DYE Boomstick... much louder than a Teardrop or AA. But I still kill people jeeessst fine! :badboy:

You don't need to go through a lot of paint just because you have an electro  And 9V batts last between TEN THOUSAND AND TWENTY THOUSAND SHOTS!!!! That's NOT constant batteries. Your hopper will suck up more batts than that, and we don't see you complaining do we? Besides... 9Vs are like a coupla bucks each.

That's what they're advertised to get. BUt also remember that leaving your batteries in the frame when it's not in use will drain the batteries (oh so slowly... but when you leave it in for a week w/o playing, it'll sure make a difference!) and also, NiMH 9.6Vs lose their charge after about 4 days. But if you stuck the battery in the gun, and just held down on full auto for 10-20k, i'm pretty sure you would make it. Regardless... it's a much smaller power drain than a revvy.

Well, I changed my mind again. Thanks for the advice Bully, Ebon, and Bourne....But I did find something to perfectly fit my standards.

Bully said I should get a spyder compact (Yeah f-ing right), but he also said to get the lapco bigshot (Again, I would have if the sound wasn't so loud). But, he got me looking around some more.

Ebon, you commented on other things...but it was good comment, worthy of recognition.

Bourne, you had a really convincing arguement about the e-trigger...Which accidently lead me into the spyder e-99 and a darn good deal at paintballgateway.com. I am going to get that, a 9vRev (Upgraded as soon as more funds come in, I don't plan to use full auto as much anyway.), and, of course, Smart Parts teardrop.

Thanks for the advice and wisdom (And a glimpse of how REAL paintballers live their odd little lives).

yes, that's right... REAL paintballers...

BUT DON'T GET A FREAKING 9V REVVY!!!!!!!!!

Phew... don't get it, they feed only SLIGHTLY faster (as in one bps) than a VL200. They are totally NOT worth it. I speak as someone who would know, having owned the VL200, 9V, 12V, 12V XBoard, and TurboRev.

I PMed you about someting. ;)

Buy a 12V (at the minimum) or even better, a 12XBoard.

ok... i've vented about the ultra crappiness of the 9Vs....

Ebonclaw
12-04-2002, 11:26 AM
Yep......the 9V is NOT worth the money. My eprsonal pick of hopper for the newb and pro alike? The Egg II. With an electronic blwoback, you don't just need something that agitates, you need something that FEEDS to stop the blowback. The EGG II is affordable performance. At least a 12V with X-baord...but it's just a faster agitator, but soooo much better than the 9V.
The Egg hopper is something that will stay by your side no matter what you upgrade to, and is affordable and reliable.
I started with a 9V hopper myself.....and I still regret it.

E-loaders are not for full auto use, and as full auto is generally dissalowed ANYwhere, it's not a big deal. But an electronic semi can have rapid rates of fire that EASILY require feeding.

Hope I helped, any more questions, ask away!

And at one point in time we all were once like you, new at this sport. This is what I did. I played at a field with rentals, I tried lots of different markes to get a "feel" for what I was looking for. I read reviews here http://www.pbreview.com/ over & over. I did searches within the forums of the markers I was interested in, and then I started asking specfic questions based on all the research I had obtained. That was 5 markers ago.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!

think about this:

spyder 2-in-1
raven nuvis mask
12oz aluminum
14 inch 32 degrees night stick

^thats an inexpensive (except for the mask but you wanna pay good money for something thats protecting your face) everything else is pretty decently priced and good quality.

thats a setup i, myself, have liked but cant afford

get whatever you like best though
