HOLY COW!!!
Do a search
First : write a 10 page essay on why you should be a mod
Second: Get a mod to nominate you
Third: Be a good member
Fourth: There must be a need for one.

You forgot about the three part test and the $50 test registration fee. You've only been here a few days, so it will take a long time to memorize the manual. You should get on that right away. Get all that done, and I may sponsor you... I don't have much to do anyway...

Ok, the test consists of three parts.
The first part is the essay, which you do on your own time. (most people that want a serious chance to be a mod will spend at least 12 hours on it)
This can be about any topic you like, but it must be a thesis that details an improvement to the modding system or to the boards in general. You need to show why it's broken (or not as good as the proposal), what can be done to fix it, and weigh the benefits versus deficits of each possible solution (don't forget to include the solution "keep it as is"). You need to clear your topic with an admin before you start though, as many have already been done. Remember, this should be written in the proposal rhetoric style. I was joking about the 10 pages earlier. There is no limit or requirement, but mine was about a third of a page under 10 just to give you an idea.
Once you've turned that in, you can take the second and third part. They don't have to be taken back to back, but must be taken within 7 days of each other. You can choose which order you wish to take them in. You have 3 hours to complete each part.
The second part is 300 questions equally divided between True / False; Sometimes / Always / Never; and multiple choice formats. These are mostly to show good judgment and knowledge of the rules.
A quick example of the types of questions for each.
T/F
True or False, the font 'script' is currently supported.
The answer is of course False, as everyone knows the only fonts currently supported are Ariel, Times, Courier, and Century.
S/A/N
Sometimes, always, or never: The following post is spam: "Well, it depends."
Of course it's sometimes, that shouldn't even take explaining.
Multiple choice
The sentence "Multiple accounts is grounds for banishment." is which rule?
a) 21.b-3
b) 22.b-3
c) 22.b-4
d) 21b-4
e) None of the above.
The answer is obviously 'b'.
The third part is 50 short answer. These are mostly procedural questions.
For example:
"As a moderator, what do you do when you find a link to a porn site in a post in a forum which you do not moderate?"
Of course, the super moderator test is much harder, which is why there are only 3. If you would like to take the second and third section, send Andrew your $50 registration fee after your essay has been approved. There is no grade for the essay, just an approved / not approved. Sections two and three need to be passed with an 80% or better efficiency.
Oh, and they will always screw with some part of your test to see if you can adapt quickly. Like I said, several of Ebon's short answer questions were written in wingdings. He skipped them and just did a better job on the rest to exceed the passing score (80) by an amazing 7 points. My EnTiRe SeCoNd SeCtIoN wAs WrItTeN lIkE tHiS. (with colors alternating between bright pink and bright yellow) After 20 questions I could barely read it anymore. On Vayp's test the answers on the multiple choice section were always to the wrong question. After about 20 minutes he figured out the answer banks were offset by 17 questions (with wrap around). So, you just never know what's going to happen. Be prepared!

Eh.....
Problem is... after the fifty bucks in registration... they have to mail it to you, which is another $20 in shipping and handleing. Then if you want a tracking number, it's more money.
THEN, they charge you monthly rates. The more people you ban, the higher the rate. Mine was ESPECIALLY high.

Don't forget about the part of the application requiring being bunkered by newbies repeatedly. This exericse gets you ready for newbie questions that continually pelt you from all sides...like, "Which barrel is the best for my Tippmann Custom 98?", a question that always pops up in the Tippmann forum but doesn't belong there...

Also... be prepared to sign autographs... Everytime I go to the field, there's some kid who wants me to sign his mask or something. At first it was fun, then it got boring... now it's kind of fun again... regardless I go through so many of those metallic pens.

:D Just don't worry about it, and post your best. In time, people will respect you, whether or not your a mod and have the implied knowledge and the current power. There are lots of non-mods that are just spouting w/ knowledge. :)

Then there are some people who should probably stop spouting at this point.
BourneKiller has it right. If you are not "complete" without the powers, then you certainly won't be "complete" with them.
If we see you can be trusted with a little, then you will be trusted with a lot.

It's not riddled with sarcasm...
This thread is a true monument to well considered requests.
I'm sure the moderators would give serious thought to copying the styles and tactics of pbnation and giving a mod spot to anyone who asks.
I LOVE threads like this.
Nope, no sarcasm at all.
