View Full Version : Using the new 90* OTB frame
First impressions—the OTB 90* frame.
First thing you will notice when you open the box is how light this thing is! The OTB frame is noticeably lighter then stock frame.
While I’m sure Dr J will post a much better review in the near future (with pics) I thought I’d give you a little preview of using this neat new frame.
The first problem we had was that the “tray screw” was not taped on our samples. This is a simple pre production “missed step” and will be taken care of in the production guns. The second problem was that the rear frame mounting screw was not counter bored. This is also a “pre production” problem and we are assured that the production frames will be counter bored. We simply went to the corner store and bought a 1 ¼” ¼ - 20 cap screw for 12 cents and all was fine.
First once mounted on the gun, the change in handling was obvious. The only thing I didn’t like was the “feel” of the composite trigger. This is just a personal thing- the trigger does NOT have the “flexi feel” that the nylon triggers in some other gun have. On the plus side, the lack of mass makes for a lighting fast trigger.
The trigger is a mag type trigger. I don’t personally like mag triggers, but this is one of the few mag triggers that I can fire about as fast as I can fire an I frame. Something a bit odd is that Dr J was able to fire FASTER with his left hand then he has with any other trigger while he fired about as fast with the right hand (which is to say very fast). Sport- the team’s reining trigger master was able to 17/sec which is within ½ a shot per sec of what he does with the I-frame he uses normally.
The Change in angle made “walking” the trigger different, and frankly only Spork and Dr J were able to walk the trigger from the get go. Like anything else, this is simply a matter of getting used to it.
The worries of “making the gun higher” was not an Issue. These gun/frames combos were used in 30 games and none of the players had hits on the tops of the hopper.
A side effect of the frame is that the change in position forces you to keep you elbow in—no more chicken winging! (Of course I wouldn’t know about chicken winging)
We have had a number of conversations with Josh at OTB, and every thing we mentioned was being addressed and will be corrected in the projection run.
We are impressed enough that we will be selling these as after market frames and will be offering up custom Rats with the frames installed.
Will I abandon my I-frame? I don’t think so. If I didn’t have one of the other it would be a close call, but having ano matched I-frames on my Rats, I most likely won’t switch. However we have al least 2 folks on the team that totally love these new frames. Unless I miss my guess, there will be at least one Rat Dog with one of these frames and I’m certain there will be one Rat factory player using them.

mmmm...me wants one real bad!
did you have troubles with the vert reg with the frame? like dropwise..
Because most of us use I-frames, we normaly don't even use drops. so the OTB frame was no different to us.
I don't have much time to type, so here is a quick review, expect pics in a day or two.
I have used just about every trigger available for stock frames, shot every other frame available, and shot many other electro guns, so I have a fairly large base of knowledge when it comes to electro triggers and frames.
FOM is correct, there were some small problems with the pre-release frames that we received, however all of the problems we had will be addressed in the final version thanks to input from OTB employees and other testers like ourselves.
This is the bottom line... OTB 90* frame shoots as fast or faster than all current frames on the market. It is as comfortable frame as any I have used, and it was actually very easy to get used to.
Some people say that they are worried about the height issue... DON'T. As a front player I am put to the mercey of the field and bunkers that I play on and around and I never once in the recent practice and tournament had a problem with the frame or my setup being to tall. It was not something that ever even entered my mind while I was playing.
While FOM doesn't like the composite trigger feel, I do. It is extremely light, responsive and strong. When you tap it, it gives of a "tink" sound similar to the sound glass makes when you tap on it. I found the trigger very easy to walk, especially with my left hand. I can shoot faster with my left hand with this frame than I have ever been able to shoot. My right hand took a little lonkger to get adjusted but I found that while a difference in speed was hard to distinguish, I could shoot at top speed easier during the game. I was able to concentrate more on where the paint was going than on pulling trigger.
Over all, this frame is definately in the same class as the I-frame. Both are very good frames that balance well and shoot fast. It will be up to each persons personal preference to pick the frame that is most comforatable for them...
That being said, I will choose to shoot an OTB 90* frame as long as I own a gun that they make them for.

You guys are so cool.:)
I have 2 questions:
1) did you find the vert frame more comfortable than the iframe?
2) is the vert frame adjustable? if so, in what ways.
I have 2 answers:
1) I found the vert frame more comfortable than the I-frame because it let me hold the frame in nearly any position I needed/wanted to.
2) Yes it is adjustable, it has a pretravel adjustment, micro switch adjustment, and a magnet strength/post travel adjustment.

Sense you have one on your RAT, can you spell out the instructions on putting it on the gun and what you personally had to do?? Thanks
sure...
take off the the two screws on the current grip frame
unscrew the tray from the frame
unplug your battery and take the battery lead out of the old frame
insert the battery lead into the top of the new frame
screw the tray on to the new frame
screw the assembly onto the gun
adjust trigger externally
rock out

$120 Here's a link!
http://www.offthebreak.com/index2.htm
whil i am not technichally allowed to advertise prices, I can tell you that there will a silver version available, and it will cost about what the others do.... what we have for pre-order price is just in case it costs a little more to get than we thought, so if you pre-order from us.... it MAY cost you less than it says on the sight.
All frames will come with the full adjustments etc. and the matching grips.
p.s.
Expect pictures of my Rat with the otb frame sometime tommorow night

Lol... knowing u Dr J, there will be a 200 picture photoshoot...
N e ways.... i have a few questions.
1. Which frame is more adjustable between i-frame and *90 frame?
2. Which frame has an all-around lighter trigger oull?
mipaint
02-06-2003, 05:06 PM
very funny...
They are both going to have about the same amount of adjustment, which is to say there is more room for adjustment than you could ever need.
And I think that the OTB frame is going to have a lighter possible pull, I don't have any test results to confirm that.... it's just a hunch because of the way the magnets feel. Even when I adjusted it very light and short, it always returned. Plus the trigger is a lighterweight material, so it may be possible to have less return strength.

This raises a question then....the I-Frame, or the Vert Frame? The I-Frame I have done my research on, and looks to have a very slop-free, sturdy trigger, whereas the Vert Frame doesn't seem to have a sturdy, slop-free trigger. I don't know why it looks like that to me, but it does. Is there any way I could get some reassurance/information on the trigger itself in the ways of slop, etc.? Dr.J, your Rat is just about the most beautiful paintball gun I have ever seen, by the way.
P.S.- The Vert Frame seems to look like WDP's Space Frame that comes on the IR3. Are they similar in any way? I really like the feel of the Space Frame, so that might push me to grab a Vert Frame.

I've seen a video of one of the guys grabbing the trigger and trying to shake it from side to side and it wouldn't move, no slop, but I will let Dr. J confirm this since he has one on his gun!!

I hope that the finish product isn't like that, I hope that it counter sinks into the body like the original RATS do!!
I heard that Sureal's was like that and the finish product was suppose to counter sunk? If I get mine and it's like that I may send it back!!

We were in a hurry to get these on guns and using them. To do that we just subituted a longer screw on the back.
The production frames will have the back counter sunk and will allow you to use the stock "low profile" mounting screw. Which is a very long way of saying- it will be like the stock frame-- not a problem.

I know that some of this post is off-topic, but man, I'm glad I just joined the ranks of Impulse owners. Not only because the gun rules, but the people own them and talk about them, especially in this thread that is devoted to Impulses/Shockers. Everyone here is nice, and they can actually have dissagreements and post them without turning the whole thread into a flame war. And people actually give useful information instead 'no, that so and so gun sucks, shoulda bought a so and so.' Sorry, just needed let a little steam off ;)
But are the Vert Frames ready for order now? I've been to the OTB website and I don't remember seeing a purchase button or anything. Also, do any of you guys that have used the OTB Frame already feel that it is worth the 120 some odd dollars? I remember the I-Frame being about that expensive, but they don't come with grips.

now that i've actually played games with it, i can definately say its worth it. and i can definately say its worth getting over the iframe. the iframe is 30 dollars more, plus you need to buy grips, which is another 20. for 120, this frame comes completely ready to strap on your gun and begin the bunkerfest :)

c0ck3r_b0i- I think that each frame has it's own style. If you find holding the frame up and near your shoulder, basically if you like the IR3's Space Frame, you will dig the Vert Frame it looks like. If you like a more 45-ish type style frame, go for the I-Frame. Both the I-Frame and Vert Frame look to have just about the shortest trigger pulls I have ever seen, so when it comes done to it, I think it's just up to your style of playing. Take a look at that video though. Changed my mind about buying an I-Frame immediately :D

I myself have an Iframe on my moonlight team gun. There is no slop in the trigger like someone mentioned above. It's super short and I wouldn't trade it for anything, BUT......the OTB is new and from shooting Dr J's RAT with the OTB frame I wouldn't mind shooting one....plus I always like shooting what's new! Either way, you can't go wrong......I think between the Iframe and the OTB it comes down to personal preference of comfort and looks of the two.
