I tryed to post this over at pbnation but their server was down. I guess this is as good of a place as any other to start up a "Newbie" FAQ. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions, then there are answers. If there is a question you want answered that was not covered, post it here, or simply drop me a PM sometime.
Now for that FAQ.....
1. Does it hurt?
2. What should I wear?
3. What are the general rules of the game?
4. Isn't paintball related to war?
5. Okay, I've played once, what kind of gun should I buy?
6. Which is better, a Tippmann or a Spyder?
7. What is Spyder's (Kingman's) homepage?
8. Where is the closest field to my home?
9. What is speedball?
10. What is a double trigger or double-finger trigger?
1. Have you ever been snapped by a wet towl, or a rubber band? If so this is what a paintball will feel like. They technically will not hurt if you are not expecting it. Actually, it seems as if the players that are more involved in the game do not feel it as much, due to your body's adreniline level. A paintball may sting a bit, but should not leave any real permanent damage.
2. Many people wear long pants and a loose fitting longsleeve t-shirt or sweatshirt, with some sort of undershirt under their top layer. You should also wear either hiking boots or some sort of boot with traction, or go with a pair of cleats, whether they were designed for baseball, soccer, or biking, it doesnt matter. I would recommend wearing a hat backwards if it its a cool day. The paint is non-toxic and washable and the capsules are made of gelatin. You might want to also wear a cup to protect your frank and beans.
3. Most games are 10 to 15 minutes long with 5-10 minute breaks between them. Most games have objectives to them. Players must keep their masks on at all times on the field. No exceptions! Once on the field you can unplug your marker, and listen to the refs. When play begins, make sure you have enough air and paint, and that your marker is cocked. Pull back on the cocking rod until you hear an audible *click* to cock the marker. To fire a paintball pull back hard on the trigger, then let go, then pull it again, etc. Once you are hit, call yourself out, and raise your gun above your head. Call "HIT" as you are leaving the field. Do not remove your mask until you are in the safety area. Plug your gun and re-enter the safety area. If you tag somebody with a paintball, they wiill follow the same process as you are told to. NO Contact rule is in order, and you will be out if you blatantly injure another player by any other means than a paintball. Some fields have a surrender rule to keep point blank firings from happening. Some do not. Never wipe off any paint, because that is cheating, and cheating is not fun! Most importantly, have fun and be safe!
4.No
5. You shouldn't even be thinking about purchasing a marker yet. Play atleast two more times, then think about it. Make absoulely sure you're ready to make a large commitment to this sport. And why do you want a marker. It's MASK FIRST!! I'd recommend playing one more time with all rental equipment, then getting a mask, a nice mask, then playing once or twice before you ask about a marker. If you have played over 3 times and are considering purchasing a marker, contact me by posting here, emailing me, IMing me, drop me a PM, whatever it takes to get an answer.
6. In my opinion their equal. But I won't go into detail about different brands of markers here. Contact me for more info, or post on this thread.
7. http://www.kingmanusa.com
8. Pick up an issue of Action Pursuit Games from your local bookstore and look in the back at the Local Field/Store Directory.
9. Speedball can be referred to as "Tournament Ball." It is not for new players in the sport. It is a highly competitive and fast paced game, where velocities of the marker (speed) are turned all the way up to the national speed limit of 300fps (feet per second), and teams try to "hang" a flag. To "hang" a flag, you must take the flag from the middle of the field, then get it to the side where the other team started. There are many complicated moves involved in speedball, that take much talent and skill. Speedball can be considerd as being in a class of its own.
10. A double trigger is just a trigger that has the length of another trigger added to the bottom of a regular trigger. It looks somewhat like this:

The only advantage to a doube trigger is its ability to shoot a small bit faster than a single trigger:
Ex: /
Do not be caught up in the saying that newbies usually say, "Who's got the automatic?" or, "Is that an automatic?" when they're really looking (or pointing) at a double trigger. And don't get confused double trigger and double-finger trigger mean the same thing.
So all I've got left to say is go out and have fun, discover the sport Robbie Newbie. After all, without you, who's the future of our sport going to be?
