Well I just got my rat hole ss hammer. I had some questions on removing the hammer and installing the new one. I saw the faq and I need a more elaborate explanation on removing the hammer, dont wanna mess anything up. Ok and my other question I put the new one on, and since all I could get a hold of was blue loctite that is what I will be using, I apply and screw in but do I have to screw it in tight? or can I just screw it in till I feel some pressure and leave it alone? Thats all for now ty for all your help.

Ya need the right tools for the job. So with that in mind get your allen wrench and heat gun along with either a strap wrench, a pair of fiber wrenches,a pair of leather gloves and a vise.
Hold your allen wrench in the vise (pointing up)after you've heated the hammer up with the heat gun (to "break" the locite that was orginally put on the threads of the shaft to hold the hammer in place) and slip the ram shaft onto the allen wrench.
With the fiber wrench (or strap if you don't have the fiber) give the hammer a quick turn to the left (counterclockwise) this might take a few times, but that's basically how I did it.

Next time use boiling water. Works easier than torches or anything like that.
I recently learned a GREAT trick for removing the hammer form the ram shaft. Instead of a hair dryer or a lighter, use boiling water. Just remove all the o-rings from the hammer assembly. Once the water is boiling, extend the ram forward so it is open. Put on an oven mitt or something like it to protect your hand. Just submerse the hammer, not the entire hammer assembly, in the boiling water for about 1 minute, maybe a little longer. Remove the hammer from the water and be careful because it's HOT. Should unscrew VERY easily.
The last one I did I was able to unscrew by hand (with gloves on).
For steb-by-step instructions see Technical FAQ #25

I'm resurectin an old thread, but i'm having trouble removing the hammer from the shaft.
I tried the hair dryer on the hammer...
I've tried the boiling water...dunking the hammer in for 1-2 min...
I used a allen wrench in the ram head...put the wrench in a vise...used a strap wrench on the hammer...and pulled the bejezuz out of it...and got
1 twisted allen wrench.
Any other ideas?
Thanks.

One other question:
I bought a used hammer assembly with supposed slik shaft...
Is there any way to tell if its a slik shaft while its in the hammer assembly? The shaft looks silver like my stock shaft...
Thanks.

does it look like it has a grainy grey-ish silver coat (it won't feel grainy though)? if so, it is a silk shot, if not, it is probably a stock ram. does it look like this (http://www.newdesignz.com/Pics/art_Imp_sst_shaft.jpg)?

double post time:
do you have a gas stove? well, what i do sometimes is i remove the 3 outer o-rings on the hammer assembly, the back cap, and i extend the hammer (pull it as far out as it will go), then i put the hammer (only) over the flame from the stove (which is one high; hold the hammer assembly with a glove or towel, it gets hot) for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then take it off, let cool for about 1 minute-5minutes, then get some plyers, hold the hammer with them, and stick the allen wrench into the back of the ram, and twist. wallah, it works ever time. good luck!

ah the great tpd...thanks for the reply.
I am not sure if it looks grainy...I don't think so. The picture you supplied is nice, but I don't have a stock picture to compare it to. I also can't see the ram part of the slik shot...just the shaft...as I can't get the darn hammer off to release the slik shaft (does that make sense?)...
I will try really firing up the hammer...

Thanks much tpd. I see the difference...I can't tell yet until I get the hammer off. I presume once the hammer is off, the shaft will slide thru the back of the assembly. Thanks.
Will try to get the hammer off tonight.
