dont remember how the valve goes back in, that is does the larger hole with the white o ring face forward and the flat portion of the pin.

The Larger hole goes towards the front of the gun. and the flat portion of the pin points up.

what about the side holes? is it installed vertically?

yes the other holes will be pointing up and down.
