Homemade smoke bombs

Anyone ever try making smoke bombs at home? I spotted the instructions on a web site and was wondering if anyone tried it out. It says to mix 4 parts sugar to 6 parts saltpeter over a low flame, put into a container and throw in a fuse. They say one pound will fill a city block with thick white smoke. I think you can find saltpeter at the drug store and if not you could probably ask the pharmacist because i think it's one of those chemical thingys taht tose people know all about

Saltpete is Potassium Nitrate (KNO3). The mixture that you are referring to is KNO-Sucrose rocket propellent. Yes, that's right, we use it in rocketry. It is very easy to make and relativly safe because of its low burn rate. The compound is very sensitive to humidity, however.

KNO3 can be purchased at the garden store desquised as 14-0-45 fertilizer. Sucrose is just table sugar (powdered is best.)

you can go to a pharmacy and order it. My friend ordered a pound of it to make smoke bombs at halloween. They worked awesome and its not expensive at all.

How do you mix that stuff, do you just like put it all in a cup over a flame and it automatically mixes? Do you have to like pound it together or somethin? And whats the best kind of packaging for it, can you just like rap it up in tissues, light a string attached and let er rip?

You have to grind it up the grains to a very smooth powder and mix it throughly. The best way to mix it is to place it in a tumbler overnight. Afterwards, you heat it up in a pot of some kind to around 200 F. Stir constantly to get a good consistency. This will give you a liquid mixture that you pour into a mold. A mold can easily be made with sections of 1" PVC pipe. You could even cast it in a toilet paper tube so it will be easy to handle. It will harden in about 45 minutes or so. You can place a fuse in it while it hardens.

This stuff has to be kept AWAY from humidity. Humidity will ruin it. Ziplock bags will work fine untill your ready to use them.

How does it go from a powder to a liquid? Do you have to heat it up in water or somethin?

The neat thing about custom making them is that you can have like little 1 inch ones or big 2 feet (maybe not) ones so you have an array of lenghts to make them in, not just the standered ones that are like 8 inches.

No. It melts into a liquid. One of the main ingredients is sugar, and sugar melts.

I don't think it would be any more dangerous than firework smoke. Just don't use the smokebombs in an enclosed area.

Well, I doubt that the head ref here would like it if I through smoke bombs behind bunkers during a game, especially if the smoke was harmful to breathe. But what I was thinking about doing was buying or creating a paintball LAW (bazooka) and loading smoke bombs in toilet paper tubes into the barrel. That would be the ****!

I have never heard about anyone mixing it with salt. A coffee grinder will work great for grinding up the pellets.

Well, I tried to go to the local fertilizer store and asked for that 14-0-45 and they had never heard of it. Then I went to a local CVS (pharmacy) and of course, there was a very hot girl at the counter when I leaned over and had to say ,, " do you guys have any saltpeter", yeah, i looked cool. They didnt have any either. I cant find this stuff.

I am currently awaiting my first order of saltpeter. I will be making about 5 pounds into smoke bombs and the other 5 pounds into rocket propellent. I will let everyone know how the smoke bombs turn out. I play paintball and am going to use them. Currently I use an automag rt all decked out.

i can't find salt peter at the pharmacy :( i gotta check the garden store, at least i know what it is now, i always used to make stuff from the anarchist cookbook but i never knew what saltpeter was so i could make half the stuff. but now all i have to do is find a place that sells the sh!t

Where can you buy Salt petre in the UK? I doubt whether our chemists & pharmacies sell that kind of stuff. I checked skylighter.com but they are in the US and shipping costs a bomb (bad joke). Know anyware in the UK? I'll try the Garden centres and the chemists but I doubt I'll find anything.

PS. If you like explosive from anarchists cookbook then try the plastic explosives one from bleach. We are lucky here, we can make fireworks and explosives legally without a license and I'm only 14! I found a recipy for C1, the predecessor to C4 and blew up a 2p (or 'quarter') sized amount with remote detonation equipment (nicron wire and remote controller from my cool chemistry teacher) on some remote land a mile from my house. I tell you I've never heard or seen anything like it!

Last thing, Whats best to burn it as the potasium nitrate & sucrose don't burn on their own? I'll try:

so far I have had some smoke produced but not enough to consider them smoke bombs. I have been doing a 50/50 salt peter and sugar mix. I will try more salt peter. To reply to a comment a few messages back, salt peter will burn on its own. I have been making the smoke bombs in 3lb coffee cans and the salt peter burns so hot the whole can glows red from a 1/2" of mixture on the bottom. The fuse in the smoke bombs is so you do not burn yourself when the saltpeter catches on fire.

i finally got some saltpeter from the pharmacy and i did the mixing and everything then i put the paste into a paper bag and let it solidify. thenv i just set the bag on fire in the middle of the street. the whole fu*KIng block was filled with smoke and the stuff got so hot it melted right through the asphault! the fire dept. came and i hid under my bed weeping silently and eating potato chips until they left. DONT DO THIS ON THE STREET THIS SH*T GETS MAD HOT!!!!!!!!

about 7 inches deep. its completely nuts! seriously i dont recommend using a lot. i thought the amount i had would be fine it was far less than a pound. when the smoke started coming out i was like, "cool" but then it didnt stop! when i checked back later that day i saw the damage! oh yeah, the smoke smells like rotten eggs so i dont recommended subjecting yer nostrils to it for an extended period of time hehe

Hey, some of you successfull people, I have melted together the stuff, is the saltpeter supposed to melt too or just the sugar to stick around it. And what percent did you mix the salt peter to sugar? THanks for your help.

You do 6 parts saly petre (potassium nitrate) to 4 parts sugar (sucrose). 60% salt petre to 40% sugar.
