This is kind of a rule. The more expensive guns will shoot straighter. If you want it to shoot straight, any high end gun will fit your needs. If you want it to shoot without lots of curving, any low end gun with a new barrel will fit your needs. If you want it to shoot, just buy a BE.

I would always recommend a nice cocker. But then again, I'm biased. My actual recommendation is try out a bunch of guns, and pick one you like. That's the only way to be sure that you will be happy with your purchase. You can get pretty much any gun in mail order, and most places will ship to the U.K. (might be more expensive though). There are a few distributors online that ship from the U.K., and their shipping costs will probably be much cheaper.

Pretty much do what the ladiesman said. If you want some names to look for, look at spyders and pirahnas. Maybe a TL, compact 2000, shutter, xtra, pirahna g2 or g3. But try them out before you buy them.

If you are just starting out, you will probably want a open bolt blow-back. (the bolt is in the open position when firing, and the gun recocks by using extra CO2 to blow back the striker.) These are all semi-automatic (one pull, one shot), and are fairly inexpensive.
The drawbacks to open bolt blow-backs is that the blowing back part shakes the gun a bit thus making accuracy more difficult. Also, they tend to use more gas.

With any low-end gun, you will need a new barrel, that will cost an extra $50 - $100 (american, don't know about U.K.), so keep that in mind.

I would keep the choices with Tippmanns, Spyders, and Spyder clones. These have more upgrades, so you can customize your gun to fit you. You can spend nothing (no upgrades), a little bit (barrel), or some people more than triple the price of the gun in upgrades.

As another good rule for beginner guns, Tippmanns will require the least amount of maintenance. I know a guy who hasn't cleaned his Model 98, since he bought it in '98, and it still works fine. Spyders need much more care, but have more upgrade options, and most upgrades are available from places other than Kingman. (Most good Tippmann upgrades come only from Tippmann).

As far as which of those to look into, is up to you. They have a variety of models, with a variety of features, at a variety of prices. The more you want, the more its going to cost.

A few of the popular upgrades:

Barrel - More accuracy and consistency over the POS barrel that comes stock

Expansion Chamber - More consistency by allowing CO2 to expand before being used.

Low Pressure Chamber - More consistency by having more CO2 on hand, ready to shoot.

Bolt - More consistency by allowing air to flow better to the ball.

Valve - More consitency by allowing air to flow easier to the bolt.

There are others too, but these are usually the most common.

Also with any gun, you will need a CO2 tank, a Hopper, an elbow (i know guys, not vertical feeds... but low end guns don't have that option usually), a barrel plug, and a mask.
The mask is the most important thing. Don't go cheap on it. It is better to get a cheaper gun and a comfortable mask, then a cheaper mask and a better gun.

Wow, I've typed a lot.

Ok, hope this helps. There are several other threads you can look at for information on getting started, as well as reviews on the main page. Also, I would recommend looking at the articles at http://www.warpig.com/ They have some good stuff for beginners in all areas.

Hope everything goes well, and enjoy yourself!

This gun would be for the second time he is playing. He doesn't need a high end semi or electro yet.
