Paintball-Packing Bounty Hunters Charged
July 17, 2001 5:01 pm EST
SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - A pair of bounty hunters who allegedly fired paintball guns at their quarry and a 7-year-old girl found themselves locked in jail while their prey escaped, police said on Tuesday.
Police arrested Darryl Pearson, 52, of San Antonio, and James Richards, 49, of Nixon, Texas, after the two professional bounty hunters chased a bail jumper through the city's west side on Monday and menaced the man, a woman and a girl who was with him with paintball guns.
The duo pursued the man, who was not identified, until he stopped his truck at a busy intersection, where they allegedly got out and began shooting at his truck, with the girl inside. Passersby called police.
"There was a 7-year-old child in that vehicle and at one point the men pointed the gun at the child," said San Antonio police spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez.
Police arrested the bounty hunters and charged them with felony child endangerment, Gutierrez said. The two are now free on $5,000 bond.
Paintball guns, air-powered devices that fire small plastic globes of paint and are often used by weekend warriors for combat simulations, are not lethal but can leave a nasty welt on exposed skin. No one was hurt in Monday's incident.
Gutierrez said bounty hunters cannot engage in chases nor use weapons while tracking down bail jumpers.
The man the bounty hunters were chasing fled before police arrived, leaving the child and woman behind in the car.
