I'm looking to buy a marker. I need a versatile weapon which is accurate and reasonably priced. I don't want to spend more in customizing the marker than I paid originally. Reliability, ease of maintentance, and overall price are all considerations. I tend to play for position, I look for position advantages and occasionally need to be able to make a long shot. Any suggestions?

the best gun for the money is either the tippman model 98 or the compact 2000 by kingman. id go with the compact 2000 since its more upgradable. it runs around 100 dollars and is a great marker to start out with.

If you go to any paintball shop they will tell you that the Custom 98 is the way to go.....well I think that is the way to go aswell... its very durable and maintanence is fairly easy from what I hear.....my uncle is going to get one as his first marker.....it has pretty good upgrades too......

I'm really looking to avoid making upgrades. I'd like something out of the box that will keep me happy for more than a year. I see both respondants are using other markers, why?

perhaps due to my own experience, i am biased toward it... but i recommend you get a shutter... i've been playing it stock for more than a year now... (bought it when shutters first came out).
the only extra with it is a CP barrel which cost $40. Other than that, not a single other upgrade... It's a very very reliable marker and the accuracy is very commendable that i've easily held my ground and kicked *** against high end guns like cockers and bushmasters. Some complain about spyders breaking down and stuff but my gun has NEVER given me the slightest trouble and it's been perfect since the day i've owned it. In fact, during that whole time of more than a year, i only broke exactly 3 balls in the gun... so this gun is very reliable. Use it with a remote and it'll be very accurate, good "gas mileage", and consistent shooting even with c02.

(of course now im getting a black magic cuz im going into tournaments but i hate part with my lil spidey...)

id get a compact 2000 for 100 dollars. all you have to do is put a night stick or terminator barrel (40-50 dollars). then you will have a nice gun that will keep you happy for a while.

Why are you recommending a Kingman and you are shooting a Spyder SE? Or perhaps a better question is why wouldn't I want to get a Spyder?

get a spyder tl+
its a good gun with a double metal trigger frame unlike the compact which is plastic.

The Spyder Shutter, the Piranha EXT Pro G3 and the GT Commando 2 have all caught my eye for various reasons. As I started ou: reliability, ease of maintenance, price and the ability to occassionally "reach out and touch someone" are all wants in a marker. I also don't want to tinker with it all the time. Load it, shoot it and clean it is about all I want to do.

get the piraniha then. its a good gun to start out with. It doesn't have all the parts a tippman has and its very easy to take apart. Shoots good but you prob dont want to keep the stock barrel. I think its vert feed too

get a compact 2000 and spend 150 in upgrades. or get a different spyder. im not bashing tippmanns it just seems like you could take a spyder farther than a model 98. what i mean is you could make it low pressure, you can get new a bolt, even make it electronic. you might be able to do these with a tippmann but it seems to me like there is a better selection of spyder parts. someone correct me if im wrong.

are you going to be playing speedball or forest? if speedball you could buy a compact or shutter and be fine. if forest. you would need to buy a better barrel. piranha vtl will do good for you too.

any gun under $329 is going to need a new barrel. just pick any of the guns because they all look perform the same. Just pick the one that looks good and get a barrel. i dont see a major difference in a compact and a shutter except looks.

I hear the knock on Spyders is high maintenance. I want to avoid that.

In terms of use, I tend to be a position player. That is I look for a strong position to support more aggessive players and to pick off opponents. Being a hunter, forest is a more natural game but, speedball is exciting. I really need a versatile marker. It doesn't have to be the fastest shooter nor the longest range, just a good combination. There's some good advice being tossed about here. I really would like to stay out of the customization.

spyders arent high matinence. all they need is regular stripping and oiling. i have a spyder and the only problem i had was to replace a few orings in it.
