My dad will buy one if it will work with his hunting rifles, but otherwise i'll have to pay for it. Please tell me it will work! :) thanks

the ones for paintball suck and usually cant go to 1000fps+
but i would use one forma shooting supply catlog that way they are cheaper and you can use it for paintball too

i think they measure up to 10,000 fps

I just read an article in field and stream magazine and they said that this new .20 caliber rifle has around 4,000fps muzzle velocity. Have your dad get a chronograph designed for a rifle but make sure it can be accurate down to about 250 fps so you can use it for your paintball marker.

A standard rifle crono will work for both paintball guns and rifles it will also measure a arrow. It will measure from 125-9999fps
Velocities for rifles vary from a 22LR at 800fps to over 4500fps for a 22-250.
FYI: M-16 shoots a .223 caliber at 3200-3600fps. A 7mm will be in the range of 2700-3200fps. A shotgun shooting a slug will be at 1200-1500fps. All velocities are dependant on weight of bullet and powder charge.

I find that hard to believe. My Colt 45 *handgun* shoots at well over 4,000fps. Most handguns of similar calibur do. Rifles use much more propellent in the shell.

Maybe I need to research some more. ^_^
But the packaging for the ammo states that the projectile travels around 4,100 fps.

Depends on what type of chrony you get. A radar chrony that you hold under your paintball barrel is no good for regular firearms. The other type of chronograph has 2 eyes that you shoot over. The chrony determines the speed by the amoung of time it takes the projectile to travel from one eye to the next.
The F1 shooting chrony can be found relatively cheap, but I had one and didn't really like the performance. It didn't pick up every shot and was really picky in low light. Find yourself a Pro Chrono. They popup on ebay from time to time and they are the best I have ever used. I bought mine on ebay for $52 which was an awesome deal for this chrony. The guy I bought it from is trustworthy. He had a few left and you can reach him at casinoelectronics@hotmail.com If he has any of the prochrony digitals left and you can get one for under $60, it would be a good buy. The digital model holds your shots and will give high, low, and average velocity along with standard deviation. Its nice.

Theres not much you can do about speed on a rifle cept slow a bullet down and that seems kinda pointless

Hmmmmmm........I wonder what a anti-paintball journalist would think of this conversation. MY RIFLE WITH NATO ROUNDS SHOOTS FASTER THAN YOUR COLT .45!!!!!

Chronographs are used by firearm shooters primarily for reloading. Shooters looking for the utmost accuracy will tune their bullet weight and powder until they get the exact fps, trajectory, anf ft.lbs. or power. They have to use a chrony to get these measurements. Different brand ammunition also shoots different speeds. No way to tell without a good chrony.
