I thought I would go off today shoot a few rounds of paint with my Tippmann Model 98, but there was one problem.. When I went to fire it would dry fire.. nothing.. so I took the tank off again and cocked it before I put it on and still the same thing..dry fire paint would roll out..So I took the barrel off(Lapco Bbigshot) and tried.. it shot ?I tried a number of diffrent things with the tank but it still did the same thing.. Also I noticed if I screwed the barrel in untill it just about sealed with the barrel o-ring it would shoot but double(which I know means low co2). The funny thing is thazt I thought the last time when I shot i had alittle bit of co2 still left in my tank(12oz).
Also I took the gun apart about 6 weeks ago and sort of wiped everything down etc.. than put it back toghther. Is there anything that I put on wrong that would cause this or is it because I don't have enough co2 to launch the paintballs with the barrel on meaning low co2 or what??
Help!

I have to ask you did re oil your gun with paintball gun oil when you put it back together and not wd-40 or some other type of oil right?

Yes I tested it.. I used my freinds co2 tank and it still wouldn't fire with the barrel on. And I also used the oil that came with the gun. I know that WD-40 is bad for the o-rings. It seems like it has something to do with the pressure when I screw the barrel in all the way. Nothing happens. just a dry fire click no co2 or nothin, but when I screw it in just to the part where the o-ring doesn't seal it shoots..!@

Well I just tried the final test. I took it apart ot see if there was anything obvious. Not really, I stuck it all back toghether and tried for the best. Well it worked but for a minute. It was shooting fine and recocking itself and everything but than it went haywire and started shooting in 3 round bursts and even automatic!!! I don't know what the hell is going on but it seems like one of the bolts is sticking somehow and it won't fire normal. I sure could use some help with this.. If you know whats going on please let me know!

This happened to one of my friends with a 98 he tried to lighten his trigger pull by streching out the springs and it made his gun double fire and go full auto. to fix it you have to buy new springs. they should be about 2 bucks at your field.

ummm..hehe.. i had the same prob with an f4 illustrator, check your bolt, you might have put it in up side down/backwords or what ever. i put the bolt in upside down b4 in an F4 and it wouldnt shoot. i hope this helps.

Well I don't know what I could have done to cause the springs to do that. What could cause the springs to streth out like that?I havn't fired the gun in like 6 weeks! But when I opened the gun up it did look like the springs were under stress so Ii put them back in alittle more. Well around here we don't really have a field.. should I just look on Tippmanns website? They will probly charge 10 bucks for a new spring.

I checked one last time. The rear bolt and front bolt o-rings seem fine..Ive only shot the gun twice and ive only had the gun for a month maybe tops.. I cleaned the front and rear bolt re oiled(hoppes 9). The only thing I see is the spring is a tiny bit bent..? Could a bent drive spring cause a fully automatci fire rate? Please let me know cause I might just send the gun back to Tippmann.

the most likely problem is CO2. The tank is low or there is a leak somewhere so that not enough gas is blowing back to recock the gun properly. Also, check the Sear, which holds the bolt in place between shots, it's possible it is worn down some and not catching properly, which would also cause the gun to cycle, three round bursts or fire like its an automatic.

Good luck.

Thanks Muckraker for responding. I just cleaned it again today but now taking the front and rear bolts out and cleaning them which I havn't done before. I put it all back toghther fine again and no obvious signs of o-ring wear or anything. The spring is somewhat curved but not bent.. The ball latch is in place the right way.. I know the bolt shouldn't have any problems cause I have only shot the thing twice!I also used Hoppes #9 oil when I cleaned it before this all happened about 5 weeks ago..

I guess if all else fails you could contact Tippman.
