I was looking at my APG and it had an article about pump guns...there were many pictures of people playing with pump guns, and most of the guns had Co2 tanks attached to them. Why are they called pump guns if they use constant air???

Because you still have to pump for each shot :P

But if it is a pump gun...why does it need an air supply, when you pump the pump, doesn't it create air for the paintballs to shoot?

the pump handle is to recock the gun. The paintball is still powered by a blast of CO2, weather it's from a 12g or constant air

Sorry guys, I'm new to paintballing and I don't know about the pump generation. I thought that you had to pump air to power the gun.

i think i know what you mean, they arent like an air rifle that you have to pump ( usually 10x) to build up air pressure to fire the projectile, the way these work is you use the pressuers in an air container ( for lack of a better word) to fire the ball, all the pump is for is to recock and let a new ball fall in to the chamber to be fired, then the pressure from the tank fires the ball
its similar to a bolt action rifle

hope thats clear

How is that even remotely funny? How easy is it to confuse that? Very. Pump = create air. Gee, I wonder how in the hell I could've goten confused with that! Stupid me! Maybe they should be called...cock guns. Think before you say something you jerk.

First of all, pump does not equal "to create air". In fact, it doesn't even mean to compress air. One meaning is "to operate by manipulating a lever" and a lever can be defined as "a projecting piece by which a mechanism is operated or adjusted". So calling them pump guns is not a misnomer. You said they should be called cock guns, which is more or less an accurate name, but cocking just refers to setting the hammer and trigger for firing. By calling them pump guns you get a more complete definition.

I just wasted 5 minutes of my life writing a treatise on why pump guns should be called pump guns...wow. I think I'll go sit in the corner now.

i figured it out pretty easily, think of a pump shotgun. and then think of a pump paintball gun. not really that much of a difference.

calling someone a noob isn't a flame if they admit that they're a noob. in your case, you said you're new to paintball, hence the term "noob." have some noob pride! everybody was a newbie once. don't take it personally.
