I have 2 Tippman 98's and my 7 year old son wants a gun for shooting around in the backyard. He does not want to play, but I think that will change. I want to buy him a gun. What would you recommend? I want something that is light. I will probably buy him a very small tank like a 6oz. What are you thoughts.

Well, for shooting around in the back yard, I suggest something cheap at first, like a talon or a stingray. Then once he gets older, if he's still showing interest, spyder or a tippmann.

lol, if find a cheap compact (spyder) on ebay, ive seen em run for as little as 25, then when he gets more into the sport, hell upgrade it. the possibilities are enless with a spyder......
dont waste money on a tippy, cant really upgrade them for cheap, by the way, every person i know that had a tippy ended up seeling it and getting a spyder
hope it hellped~martin

Why not let him just mess around with one of your tippmanns? Its not like he'll break it :|

why not even just let him use one of your tipps? When he gets about ten and can actually play at a field get him a spyder 2 in 1 or just a compact if they are still around in three years. But I would just let him use on of your markers and make him wear a mask. Start drilling that in his head now.

Something small...
The C98 is big for my build, I'm a little under average height btw and it is certainly too large for a 7 year old.
I highly recomend an Autococker or Automag. The small size means that your son will be able to control the gun with the hand not too far forward of the frame making his reactions, control, and accuracy better while reducing fatigue.

Your talking about a high end marker for a seven year old to just shoot around in a backyard!!!! The guy uses a 98c why would hey buy a more expensive gun for his son with no exp!?
try a piranha VTL, there is no bottom line so you just screw the tank in the BL adapter, or just a spyder compac, or go with a stingray, that was the first thing that came to mind

:D Yes thats a good deal if he wants to shoot stuff.small and light gun too. And it has a mask when he starts to play.A fast loader would be good too.

And your point is....
If the perfect gun for me cost $5,000.00, I would save up and gladly pay. Luckily for me...my favorite marker seems to be the Phantom and didn't cost much. If the Ir3 Fly was the gun for me...then I'd have one. If a Stingray was the gun for me...I'd have one.
It all comes down to personal preferance. Automags will probably be my choice for semi...Sniper IIs may be my choice for pump. I tried a Viking and Matrix and found they weren't for me, the trigger didn't love me.

the point is it's a little kid! he's not goinna be able to hit anything carrying a 5lb marker compared to a 2lb marker. still stick by my suggestion of the m3 package i mentioned up top. it comes with everything he needs including a mask he can use, he's a lil kid you don't want him firing a marker without a mask, he may look down the end of the barrel and fire if a ball jams.

A seven year old can loose intrest in a brand new toy in like two minutes!! Thats the point, I wasn't talking about your preference Black!

You might want to try a talon or some other cheap pump with him. Although you can buy a semi-auto for only like $10 more the talon will be very efficient and a very good training tool. Pump's can really save you a lot of money because your kid won't go, "let's see how fast I can shoot or Let's shoot like crazy" Also, the pump is a great teaching tool because it really helps you aim.

you dont really wanna start a 7 year old with a tippmann because of the weight. they might become discouraged easily about the weight and force them to lose interest in paintball faster.
best to go with the m3 package i listed

seriously, do piranha or spyder, they run cheap, easy to maintane, best on the market
i agree, tippmans are heavy, my friend ended up buying a new gun cuz he coulnt carry his tippman

Overall weight means little when compared to the ability to hold the marker or weapon comfortably and the DISTRIBUTION of the weight.
If I may relate my personal experiances: an M4 carbine is 2.1 pounds lighter than a standard M16. However, if you put a counter-balancing weight in the stock of an M16, it is much easier to shoot not only due to reduced recoil but better balance meaning higher accuracy (less muscle being used, less fatigue at the range).
SO, weight is not the dominate factor, balance and comfort are.
Weight...unless you carry around the gun for days, a 1 pound will mean little in the scheme of t hings where games may last only a single hour. BUT, if the gun is too large, it will fatigue the user quickly (rather use a gun a bit smaller than too large).
But for a short-term investment, then anything will do.
I would start him out with a Spyder Victor...this is truly a perfect starter for any paintballer!! comes with bottom line setup and Drop Forward!!
This will way your son will get the feel for a spyder and could someday progress to a bigger better spyder...the Victor is build on the Famous Syder body just like all the others...and you can get the Victor for like $60-$70 brand new!!
hope this helps

yep, you are officially an idiot
a little kid doesn't have the same strength as we do (not including you wussy) he's not going to want to be holding a bulky and heavy marker all day. he's going to want something small and slim that will be right for his size and strength.
he's a KID, he doesn't have the same strength and endurance as a teen/adult

You simply restated my point. So you call yourself an idiot as well.
I stated that balance and a properly sized gun to the individual are more important than overall weight.
The body of an M3 Dragun is 8" and it weighs 3 pounds unlouaded.
Automags are 6.5"-5.5" long (body length) and weigh between 2.25 pounds to 2.65 pounds unloaded.
Tell me, unless my math serves me incorrectly, or my figures are grossly twisted out of proportion (which I highly doubt), how is an Automag bulkier and heavier than a Black Dragun?
Autocockers are heavier although shorter than a a Dragun, heavir by 9-ounces although less with the slight milling.

What about a JT Enforcer? I beleave thats the name of them. There small pistols that people use as side arms in senerion games or pump games. It would be about the size as one of his toy guns, runs off cartirdges and only holds like 9 shots. But i dont know if they make them anymore.

this may sound bad, but my first gun was a tigershark.
I was about 13 and i liked it. The pump helped me to aim and its not that heavy at all, and man its not that bad and it was cheap.Very cheap, and it still works 2 years later :D
(i dont use that gun anymore only to f**k around with lol i use my tippy now)

Geezus, Blacksheep, you're suggesting that a 7-year-old kid get a $200-300 gun just to shoot paintballs at a tree in his backyard.
River, get him a cheap Spyder or Piranha. Good enough for a little kid to play with in the backyard or when he finally gets on the field, and when he grows up in a few years you can ditch the Spyder and get him a better gun. Or just let him use the Tippmanns.
An Automag for a 7-year-old who only wants to shoot a few in the backyard. Sheesh...

River, I recomend something like an ACI Maverick pump or a PMI Tracer pump, they are identical. Get that and a BE pocket hopper, and a small 9oz tank and hes set for some backyard fun. I chose this because its a cheap and very light setup.

Go for a used compact off of ebay, they go for $40 or less. It'll be nice for hum and if he loses interest you can fool around with it.

All I'm saying is that spending $200.00 if he's gonna be in the sport is a good investment because it's better suited to his size.

I agree with you but his father doesn't know if he will take an intrest in the sport. I say just get him a cheap stingray or something along those lines and if he can't get enought of it, then invest the money.
