I heard once upon a time that to have a rear cocking gun you had to have a beaver tail for protection. Is that true? Thanks, figured this would be a good spot for this question.

I dont think that's an official rule...
If it is I'm breaking it...

Probably just a rumor. It could get hurt to get hit by that thing though. I dont know how or why you would get hit by it. But you never know. Moving parts are an accident waiting to happen.

some fields don't allow it because it might weaken your lens, and if you get gogged something bad may happen. i've been hit by my bolt a couple of times cause i'm not used to it yet, but i barely felt it.

yup, same here...on the occasions that I've borrowed my friends Piranha, I've forgotten that it's not my 98c, and held it right up to my mask...*WHAP*

Yea, I have a pile of guns and I usually use my Xtra which is rear cocking. I used a compact for one game and forgot that it was side :|

It is not for protection from the bolt, it is from people cheating the chrono and hitting the hammer to increase velocity. Why someone would do so, I don't know! It used to be a full blown tourney rule, don't know anymore.

its not required at almost every rec-ball field.....but it is a rule in tourneys
I just leave the beavertail on mine. :) Rather be safe than sorry haha

Yeah most places don't really care about the beavertail.
But when you think about it, all those rumors about a blowback rear cocking bolt hitting you in the lense and cracking it can't possibly be true, right? I mean when a rear cocking gun is cocked the bolt is sticking out the back to the furthest extent it will go, (compared to the uncocked position), and the only time it moves is in the split second when you fire a round, where the bolt moves up and returns back to its original position. You would have to move the gun closer to your face the moment you fire in order for the bolt to come back and actually hit you. Otherwise, you're playing with the gun too close to your mask in the first place where it starts off on your face and ends in your face.
But with an autococker's back-block... it's entirely possible.
Just my thoughts. :)
