View Full Version : Is an Impulse a good gun for a front player?

Are they relatively compact and lightweight for an electro? Would it be better to get the vertical reg version so it's that much smaller height wise?
I want to get a higher end gun so I can start playing in tournies and compete a little better and was thinking about getting a Vision Impulse with the Vertical Reg or a Micromag maybe.
I'm also wondering if they can take a decent amount of abuse, because I like to slide into bunkers and there's the occasional trip and fall :)
And how hard are they to take care of? If I can pull apart a spyder and clean it and put it back together, would I have an ok time learning how to work with an Impulse? I know an Impulse is more sophisticated and probably harder to deal with, but is it easy to learn?
A lot of questions :) Much thanks to anyone who can help me out. Don't want to go out and waste a bunch of money.

I'd say the vertical reg would be a better choice for a front player, but yeah, I'd say they are good frontman guns. If you slide alot, I'd try and not slide with the gun on the ground, especially if there is alot of dirt/sand there, because an impulse is an open bolt gun.

yeah, its small and compact, and lightweight from what i here.

a lot of amateur a and b teams are picking them up now, so i am sure that it is tourney worthy. go with the vert reg so you dont have to mess around with the max flo on the bottom.

they look pretty rugged to me. just avoid getting dirt on the top because it will scratch up your bolt and all hell will break loose from there.

impy is perfect for front players, it doesn't matter how you mount the maxflow cause height doesn't really matter,

mine has gone through hell. and its' still working great. i've fall and even crushed the maxflow. but no damage. there sturdy. they work perfect on co2 and micromags don't. a while back i had the same choice. between the impy and the mag and i chose the impy cuase i didn't wanna have to upgrade the mag to a RT to get it shooting sweet. mags also need nitro. i'm just wondering if i should've gotten one of the original visions.

it's a different gun, so u'll have to learn about it. it's not that hard i took mine apart the first day i got it and figured everything out. just need to use some dow grease on it instead of oil. you just have to grease the valve hammer and bolt. and the max flow every 2 or 3 months.

i just use my impy for renegade ball and it's works great. you should get a delrin bolt as an upgrade down the line just cause you don't need to grease em. the impy is the best

i especially like the imp because once you get the vision eye, most upgrades (besides barrels and n2) cost less than $50, like delrin bolts, delrin valves, valve caps.

it seems like its the most cost efficient paintball marker for upgrading.

prOk and bbq, pretty much covered the bases, I'll just throw in my 2 cents and tell ya I think Imp's are perfect for front, back, and middle, in fact by backup marker is a Imp also,(yeah, I got two) I run nitro on both, with shocktech drop fowards. Now for the most part I run around with a 10 inch freak teardrop barrel w/ the Armageddon 68ci tank, just because it's small enuff I can tuck into a tight little bunker and not be "hangin out" (hey at 6ft tall and 215lbs and 44 years old, there's alot hang out already) which is perfect for front players, when I know I'm stayin back I'll switch fronts and go with my 16" teardrop or 14" All American front. If you're gonna be doin tournies you should go with a 45ci and the Vision (I'm strictly a Rec Player, and don't need the vision, and have yet to chop a ball). What ever direction you go make sure you check out this www.E-PaintballOutlet.com shop, FOM is the guy that helped make my two Impulse's :D MINE!

Thanks for the help. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the impulse after hearing 4 posts of good advice. I'm also going to get it set up the way I said most likely, the Vision with the vertical reg.
Any suggestions on barrels for it? I know Smart Parts makes barrels for them and Dye does too I'm pretty sure, but does anyone else?
Or is the stock barrel good enough?
Also, what are some prices, setups, and packages you've seen? Like how much did your impulse cost and what did it come with?
Thanks again.

Get yourself the Freak! If you're doin' Tournies you'll want a 10" front, they're great for gettin' in tight little bunkers!

ok the impy is a great gun for front to mid play. i wouldnt really want to use it for back. a shocker would be a better choice for back. the stock barrel is ok but u will want to upgrade to a freak. i run my impy on co2 and have not had any problems with it. i have the max-flo on the bottom of my gun and its takes any abuse i dish it. i really dont see what the point of the vision is. i mean i have put like 15 cases through my impy and have only broken 2 or 3 balls.
i had a spyder before i got my pulse and it was real easy to learn. its a great gun

Dan, You're right alot guys do like Shockers that play the back, But with my 14" All- American Front, I can reach out and touch some of the guys hiding on the far side of the field, And still have some air left at the end of play those Shockers tend to be gas hogs!

I think the impulse is perfect for all player distances. if you have a freak kit...you can use the 10 in. front for front to mid ranges and get a 14+in. front for being a back player. It's really awesome! Love the freak!!!!!!!!!!!!!
