An on/off valve does 2 things:
1. Makes it easier to screw in your tank.
Without an on/off valve or the "o-ring trick" the pin inside the asa will push down the pin in the tank's pin valvebefore the o-ring seals. When this happens you lose a lot of co2 or air and probably your o-ring.
2. Protects your solenoid.
An on/off valve or the "o-ring trick" will prevent the co2 or air from pressurizing your gun all at once and possibly damaging your solenoid valve.
O-ring trick: Put an o-ring in your asa. Then, you can screw in your tank without losing gas and possibly an o-ring. You may also want to lower the pressure on your regulator or screw the tank in slowly.
If you use co2 with an Impulse, you need an anti siphon tube installed.

Good points ds, I think it's important to mention that having the anti siphon tank "set-up" properly is very important too, What I mean by this is that the tube is at the top of the tank when the tank is screwed all the way into the asa. Otherwise you'll be feeding your Impulse liquid c02 and that is a very bad thing!

Yeah, that's important too. I got mine professionally installed.
