Do any of my twisted brethern play guitar? I've got a couple (8) and I'll throw some pic's up if anyone's interested! I've played in cover bands for the last 25 years and opened for some big names, I don't know if you guys will know any of these bands but, I'll throw'em out and see, Hey, cut me some slack I'm as old as dirt! (44) And these guys used to be pretty good 20 years ago!
Outlaws (2 times once in 85 and 2nd time in 87)
Kim Mitchell (in 86)
Rick Sanders(in 88)
Foghat (in 89)
Rick Emmett from Triumph (in 90)
Quiet Riot (in 91)
The band I was with just did cover stuff, and we were good, not great, but tight! we had a lot of fun and met alot of really cool ppl, and alot of girls!!! We once played with a band the Beatles had discovered and signed to Apple records called Bad Finger (ask your parents), they liked us so much they asked us to go on tour with them, But we all had families and day time jobs so we turned them down. So how about it any othe players out there?

Either your neck is bent convex or your bridge is too low! Or both! Have ya had the strings off of it for some time? that will cause it to bow, Look down the neck (hold the guitar like a rifle and sight it from where ya hook the strings into the bridge) see if it bows backwards, Get back to me and let me know what that looks like.

Dude my band is trying to bring back the old school heavy metal, yes we have some more contemporised heavy metal (sepultraish) but we are really trying to bring back some old school metal (pantera, suicidal tendencies). And not all metal is ***** as you said man like some bands that everyone thinks are hard (Linkin Park). BUt seriously now it dosent suck this is mainstream metal is just another branched out form of metal. So you cant say all metal sucks because it dosent.

Hey kat sorry it's been so long - my guitar neck looks like the middle of it would be bending out away from you if you were playing it, not sure if thats convex or what, might be my eyes! is there anyway to fix this, or ajust the bridge ?
and the other guy that had the same problem - howd you fix it ?

Goblin...Thats not a good thing. Usually happends on cheap guitars (the one i didnt wanna show you guys a pic of) Im sure Kat will give you a better explination on what to do. When it happend to me i had to take the strings off, glue the neck back to the body better, and re string it.

Having a straight neck is critical! But first a couple of questions, Here is where I'll play Dr, and you play patient. What kind og guitar is it? Did you have strings on or off the guitar for any period of time? Has been it used regularly, or has it been in the case under the bed with strings tight or loose? Did you change the gauge of string? Does it have adjustment capabilities? Truss rod, bridge adjustment, or saddle adjustments ( be able to raise or lower , move foward or back each string at the bridge plate) Getting the neck straight is the first step if the guitar is ever going to play decent, providing it can be "tweaked" back into playing condition!

alright- It's a ST-3 Rogue, got it from musicians friend but i cant find it on their site anymore so I duno,
I've had it prolly a month, and the same strings have always been on it, but I have played regularly, tuning it regularly as well,.. pretty sure you can ajust the bridge (its got all the screws and stuff i think, just not sure how), and yes it has a truss rod- hope that helps thanks a lot,

Hard Metallica is Disposable Heroes, Frayed ends of Sanity and Dyer's Eve. My forearm always starts to cramp up when I play through these @ tempo.
another easy song is Hero of the Day...that's real easy, gotta tune your guitar down though (that's not really a problem at all though)

Once I get a career..I'm going to get a custom ordered Jackson Randy Rhoads, neck-thru 24 frets, emg-81 pickups bridge and neck. original floyd rose tremolo, mahogony body, with ebony finger board and Radioactive sign abalone inlays. I"m not sure what color I shoudl get, I might get pewter (grayish) or like a satin black with white beveled edges. I'm not into the graphics (flames, skulls etc). It's gonna cost around 3 grand. I'll also get a Mesa Boogie Tri-axis preamp goinng into a strategy 500 power amp 250 watts stereo baby! I'll be able to get any sound I want with that baby.

I just have a 5 peice generic set. But I put Remo heads and Zildjian cymbals on it, so it sounds decent. I'm poor though, and I am not in a band, so I don't have a real need to get anything better.
But I have been playing drums since I was 13. I was in the Highschool Drumline. We traveled all over the place going to compitions and stuff. In 1996 we were ranked 7th in the Nation through WGI. I played snare. During Concert band I played the timpani.
I always wanted to be in a band where I set up a HUGE rack of all sorts of different drums and played that. I want everything from toms to different snares to a set of quints to timpani to gongs to a marching machine and so on. But also have someone else playing a regular set. And while im doing it I want to sing backup. Not lead.
Then Slipknot came out, and pissed me off because they have those 2 ****ers and they don't do anything. But they took my idea and didn't capitalize on it!
Oh yea, there is a death metal band called "Bruijia" or somthing, im not sure on the spelling. But they have 3 bass players and a guitarist.
Its a band made of Dino and Christian from Fear Factory, Billy Gould from Faith no More, I think the Drummer from Brutal Truth(not 100% sure), and a few other people. They sing in spanish, its mexican deathmetal.

Yea, thats the spelling of it. They sang "Don Quiote Marijiana", the Macerana knock off. Its great.
They are releasing a greatest hits CD, which I want to get because I want one of their CD's, but I only listen to death metal every once in a while.
Anyways, if I start a band, you can be the set player.

Dood BC Rich is really really good if you get an american made one. Handmade in the USA. The cheaper japanese (I think) made one's the platinum series and the bronze series..I'd stay away from those. But if you're getting USA made Widow, awesome. Doesn't the bass player from W.A.S.P use that bass?

OMG, the frets are the little metal bars that are positioned vertically on the neck. the closer the frets to the body of the guitar/bass the higher the note you'll play when you press the string down on that fret. Get some guitar mags and read up on it a little more...don't make any stupid purchases. THe ibanez is probably way better than the walmart p.o.s Don't get anything from those stores. Get a guitar from a guitar dealer.
I suggest Chuck Levin's music center in Washington DC. Get it Mail ordered. they have almost everything for less money than the rest and the service is great...and the equipment I've ordered from them has always been in perfect condition when it got to my door.
Here's a list of what I've ordered from Chuck Levin's
1. ESP EX-351 guitar
2. Line 6 flextone 2 XL (2 x 12 version with 100 watts stereo, my brother's setup is these first two)
3. Jackson RR3
4. Line 6 flextone 2 plus (1x12 60 watt version..with speaker outs that boost the power to 100 watts when hooked up to a 8 ohm speaker cab)
5. 2 4x12 line 6 speaker cabs (full stack at home...my brother gets the privalidge of using both until I get back home in a week, then I get half of it)
All of that equipment cam in impecable condition and was less money than mars music and musicians friend. You have to e-mail or call to get prices and availability...they'll get anythign you want though.

When I go to the Ibanez US site, I can't find a GRX 70, only in thier UK site. None of the GRX series in the US site look like the one from the UK site. The closest thing I found that looks like the GRX 70 in the US site is the RG170. Is the RG170 the same as GRX 70? I'm asking this because I bought a GRX 70 used for $129 and I don't know if it was a good deal. I traded it in for my Jackson DX1 reverse(I paid $160 for it and traded it in for $75).
I just wanted to know how bad did I get ripped off and I don't know sh*t about guitars, I just play around with them when I don't play paintball. I do like the GRX 70 though, it was much smaller and lighter than my jackson.
Thanks for you time guys.

I don't know what you've figured out by now, but the frets are between the litttttttle metal bars on the neck, some of em have dots....understannnnnd.... if your going for a cheaper quality guitar, you should go to www.musiciansfriend.com , and make a package for youself, include a squier guitar $140ish, not bad electrics for the price, pick out a practice amp, 10Watt should do I'm not real sure I started w\ a 40W, make sure to get everything your gunna need, strings, gigbag etc.. if you can play acoustic you should have no trouble with electric
Although the bass players are offended by this, I know from expierence and everone agrees bass guitar is a little easier than electric keep that in mind, and if your in the KC area and can somehow by chance play drums look me up we need a drummer

my brother's (also band mate) LTD-ex 351 he's put emg-81 in the bridge and an EMG-60 in the neck sounds stellar
my rhoads..(pictured above this post has two 81's in it.
I get some pics of us playing live this summer...you'll be surprised.
We lost our drummer though turns out he's going to marchin a drum corps. ugh, I always knew he was a *****. It's looking like we'll end up witha girl drummer...she's a babe though so it should work out fine. We're a 3 guitar 1 bass and drums band. And we are mostly 80's metal, Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth are our biggest influences...and the high pitched vocals Iron Maiden -esque.

Stratocasters are not good imo, they're not versatile at all...only 21 frets....and the tremolo just sucks compared to a floyd.
I'm not a big fan of single coil pickups...they're just too noisy and they don't distort good IMO. I do however like a fender strat's clean sound....really pristine.

That's no problem bro! I'm in the process of updating my house amp system right now. (For those who don't know music talk, I don't mean the stereo in my house, the house system is what the audience listens to. the band listens to their own amps as well as the monitors for vocals, the house mixes everything together and project it out front.) I've had EAW cabinets with Bose subs, but I've been under powering them. So now I'm looking into some more muscle! I'd like to get some more Crown Amps, but they are out of my price range. So I'm leaning towards some QSC stuff.

Get a PA before you get a stack. Its Sooooo much better. If hooked up properly you can get a Stereo Effect and have different sounds come from different angels. Its sweet. But i'm still getting a Marshall AVT Stack soon

dood you're going to play a 1000 dollar + guitar through a marshall AVT stack?!!! oh jesus, please spare this man for he knows not what he does. If you have a guitar like that..the only thing you should play it through is a nice Tube Amp...like a,
Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier
Marshal DSL (TSL aren't that good imo)
VHT pitbull
Soldano SLO-100
Solid state amps are crap...they're half as loud and most of them are made to seem "like" tube amps.
unless you go digital (like me) just get a tube amp...
Killer Kat, how much does a PA system cost you anyway? We usually use the in-house PA as opposed to our own. my line 6 amp can plug straight into a PA via XLR outputs (mic outputs) but it turns off the amp's power section so I have to hear myself through the pa...its tough cuz most places...the PA speakers are in front of the stage...It doesn't really work very well...so to be real loud I was hoping to get a real powerful PA ...that I could put on the stage...and hear myself more like a regular amplifier...My 4x12 guitar cabinet is plenty loud actually...but I'm a bit obsessive. I like the shock value horrendously loud metal gets from the crowds in a small town in Montana....so I need LOUDER!
Letchworth40
04-01-2002, 10:34 PM
What??? and dude... the AVT2000 Models are great. Its running through a PA so its really loud. People could hear me playing about a mile away when we were just screwing around in the garage.... heres my setup. Anyone can tell you this is a good setup (even Kat)
Marshall AVT2000 50 watt
750 watt 12 channel AMP
2 Yamaha Club Series Speakers 700 watts
3 Yamaha Club Series Monitors 300 watts
Digitech GNX 3 Pedal
Samson Wireless
with this i can get as loud as i want whenever and it sounds great. I can get any sound imaginable in stereo through this.
And when my Amp has the Emulated DI Out on it too but it sounds better when i Mic it. I get a better reverb effect. If you want to make it sound like a real amp just put a few monitors close to you. A PA should cost somewhere around $1000-$2500. My setup which is pretty good costed around $1800
Mokushi Faitaa
04-02-2002, 06:35 PM
a tube amp would sound better....
its all opinionated anyway.

Tube! There is nothing like warm and rich, silky smooth, as Clapton called it from his old Cream days the "Woman Tone" you just can't get that without tubes. I make a point of avoiding processors. Their decay sucks, it takes you to a certain point and then just drops straight off, that is not cool. Sone of there tone quaility is ok, however it still sounds fake. Do you guys know what I mean?

Mokushi Faitaa
04-03-2002, 02:42 PM
When you get a PA system you usually run everything into it.
you Mic the guitar amp, bass amp, the drums...keyboard amp whatever else you got...give a Mic to anyone who sings...put it all through the PA.
yOu'll hear the Singer just fine...just make sure each channel's volume is balanced with one another. that's why people have sound technicians.
Letchworth40
04-03-2002, 09:31 PM
wholly crap... 900 at 4???? Where do you play??

the best Low end guitars IMO are the import Jacksons and ESP LTD series. For 500 dollars you can get a pretty nice M-series guitar or Viper. www.espguitars.com and www.jacksonguitars.com
though, stay away from the ESP message forum...bunch of a**holes linger around there. The Jackson forum is really good to ask questions in....but they are really biased towards Gibsons...and pretty much anything that isn't JAckson or Charvel.
KOTOWA
04-27-2002, 06:54 AM
Im really falling towards the ESP guitars. I like some of those 2002 colors! Their guitars also have the body shapes that are my style. Kirk Hammet also plays their guitars, so it must be good. Now all thats left is to see if they are durable, and can play. Ill do that at the store around here.
Mokushi Faitaa
04-27-2002, 08:29 AM
ESP has some quality in those LTD's. Though, you should know that the only reason Kirk Hammet plays ESP is because they pay him to. They are great guitars though...I've played the EX-351 and the EC-300. If you like the les paul style The EC-300 (or EC-1000 i fyou feel saucy) would be a great choice. The neck is about 5 times faster than a gibson's. and the EC-300 will retail for about 450 dollars. f (the MSRP is like 799)

when did punk become the fastest music in the world?
Mokushi Faitaa
04-27-2002, 09:02 AM
ugh... Les pauls are not known for their speedy necks. and punk is not fast. I'm talking about Shredding and alternate picking. not downstroking a 2 not power chord as fast as you can.
listen to some other music.
Jackson's are known for their necks and their upper fret access.
U.S.A B.C Rich, ESP, and Jackson all have more comfortable necks with jumbo fret wire and a flatter radius. They are way superior to the over priced LEs Paul. Les paul is known for their Thick tone. pUnkers don't use Les Pauls anyway...what the hell are you talking about? Real punks use pawn shop strats and cheap *** loud as hell amplifiers cranked to 11.
The fastest music is Classical, and Speed and Thrash Metal. Get it right. sure some punk has an extremely fast tempo...but the guitar work doesn't require that you need a fast playing neck. I respect a punk guitarist that knows he's really not any good. not one that talks about how great his gear is and how awesome Tom Delonge (or whoever) is. Leave the gear talk to the Blues and MEtal players.
I'd never buy a new Gibson....sure they're handmade in the U.S.A ....by first year Wood Shop students. Their quality has gone downhill ever since they made all those lawsuits that stopped ESP, Ibenhad (ibanez) and JAckson from producing better more playable versions of their Explorer, SG and Les Paul models.

Exactly! It is all about the feel, along with the sound. And that in turn feeds back around into the feel.
Les Paul have a rich warm "woman tone" and they sustain forever. The only problem is they weigh a lot, but that where the sustain and warmth comes from.
As far as speed and Les Paul's, I'd put Gary Moore up against anybody on any other kind of axe. He'd smoke 'em all! The guy rips, but can come right back the next riff and make ya cry with sweet soft soulful leads, again it's all feel!
Here again is my Les Paul (sitting, waiting for me to pick it up and let it sing alittle too!)

you guys do realize that "woman tone" is not a bad thing. and besides...your amplifier is what produces about 90 percent of the tone anyway. I didn't mean to upset anyone that likes the les paul tone...its just something people have to realize...the MEtal Guitars are faster and easier to play. JAckson's are the best guitar for the money you can get. Gibson's are overpriced imo. I really don't like them. my friend has a Gibson Black Beauty and it was uncomfortable for me. I liked its clean tone..but that's not really a worry of mine. i'm mostly a lead player...my guitar needs to scream as if it escaped teh 8th circle of hell.

I had to post this. the tom delonge interview with guitar.com
Tom Delonge: The trick to being hummably heavy.
Punk rock has never been a forum for musical virtuosity. Historically, many bands have been more concerned with drinking enough booze and insulting the right people than with constructing dynamic songs or performing with any sort of precision. Of course there are exceptions -- Fugazi (who don't even drink), Bad Religion, Pennywise, and now Blink 182. What's most surprising about Blink is how they manage to play at such hyper-sonic speeds, yet retain all the melody and mirth of Cheap Trick. We recently sat down with guitarist Tom Delonge to discuss songwriting, influences and gear.
Guitar.com: Soundwise, your influences are pretty clear -- Descendents, Bad Religion, Pennywise -- but at the same time, you have your own voice. How do you usually put songs together?
Delonge: I have my own way of formulating songs. Usually I come up with a guitar part, and I try to get a sense for how the song sounds and feels emotionally. You don't want to have an aggressive song if you're writing about flowers. So I try to see where the lyrics are going, and I'll work with it from there. And a lot of times, I'll have something I want to say. I'll plug in a guitar and start saying it and it comes out perfect. But that doesn't happen that many times. When it does, it usually turns out to be one of the better songs on the record. But most of all, I have things I want to write about and I match them up with songs I'm working on musically, and I go from there. But it's kind of a long process because we throw away a lot of stuff. We really work on them and try to get them the best they can be.
Guitar.com: What are you striving for with your guitar parts?
Delonge: I just want it to sound different. I think of every part of a song as a different part of a guitar, as well as on bass and drums. I personally try to make every part of the song sound different from each other and do different things. I really don't want to sound like we're just doing power chords all the time. I want to do guitar riffs, and whatever different sounds I can make. Everything is its own instrument.
Guitar.com: Who are you inspired by?
Delonge: There are a lot of punk bands I'm inspired by. The Descendents by far, but there are all these other bands that have come up with great riffs -- Screeching Weasel, Propaghandi, NOFX. Lately I've also been inspired by Jimmy Eat World and Far.
Guitar.com: You play really fast rhythms, but you give them a smooth, fluid feel. It's heavy, yet it's totally hummable.
Delonge: I try to do that. We try to have songs with a lot of energy. I've always been a fan of stuff that's fast and aggressive, but that you can listen to and sing along with. I think that's good for kids that don't really listen to punk rock, too, because maybe we can open up some doors to some heavier stuff.
Guitar.com: Your playing is surprisingly tight.
Delonge: We try. I think a lot of punk bands just aren't good musicians, and that goes for a lot of bands, metal bands or whatever. We kind of grew as a band, and luckily we're able to play tight together. We want to come off as a professional act. A lot of bands don't. When we were touring small venues in front of 50 people a night, we weren't tight at all. We didn't care. We would drink and **** off and yell at the crowd, and we didn't even care when we started or ended. But now we do because there are a lot of people watching us and we don't want people to think we're ****ty.
Guitar.com: Can you describe your guitar set up?
Delonge: In the studio we use a whole bunch of different things. We use three amps at the same time all the time, and then double back. But live, I use two amps. I use a Marshall JCM 900 and a Mesa/Boogie, and I run them stereo. And I play them really loud. I have like 250 watts going.
Guitar.com: What about your guitars?
Delonge: I play Stratocasters. I have one humbucker, no other pickups, no other knobs, just the volume knob. I have these Fenders made custom. They have '70s headstocks and Spurzell locking tuners, and I play out of an Invader pickup, which is like Seymour Duncan's loudest pickup. And I take out all the electronics so it's louder as well.
Guitar.com: Do you use standard tuning?
Delonge: Yeah standard tuning, but we capo up to F Sharp on a couple songs like "What's My Age Again?" and "Going Away to College" so Mark can sing in a higher key.
Guitar.com: What are your string gauges?
Delonge: I use Ernie Ball -- .10 - .52.
Guitar.com: Are you a fan of effect pedals?
Delonge: Nope. No pedals or anything. I keep it clean, straight through the amp. I have a paranoia of that stuff. Pedals and that stuff just decreases the sound of the guitar. It just cuts everything in half. The more electronics you run through it, by the time your guitar signal gets to your amp it sounds all fallen and ****ty.
Guitar.com: Any tips for people inspired by your sound?
Delonge: You just have to stay passionate and really believe in what you're doing. If you stay focused, it will happen. As long as you really try hard and be patient it will happen. You can't expect it to happen overnight. It took us almost eight years to get to this point. -- Jon Wiederhorn

what an idiot...if he knew how to use his effects loop of his amplifiers he wouldn't have the problem of losing the guitars sound ARGH Tom Delonge pisses me off! newsflash tom...you're not a good musician either! Basically what he said is...I keep my guitar simple because i"m too lame to bother with a tone knob or a pickup selector switch. I'm sorry but having an extra pickup and a tone , volume and a selector switch is not going to interfere with the guitar's sound. what a ****. If I got near that guy I'd put a death grip on his throat and head butt him until his brains splattered out his ears.

get a fender mini amp. I bought one that runs off batteries and is a one watt(talk about insane wattage!! ). Its actually got some good noise for its size and run me about $35. you can also go to radioshack and get a power adapter for like 5 and then it can plug into the wall

Yes! They are one of the earlier acoustic guitars Gibson ever made.
Your friend is somewhat off on it's value though.

I didn't mean that to sound like she was lying! Maybe just alittle confounded. Who knows it could have belonged to someone famous, or someone special in her life.
I know, I've got things you could buy at a Wal-mart that belonged to my Grandfather, I wouldn't sell them for a million dollars!

I just bought my Epiphone Les Paul Standard a few months back. Love the guitar. The sound quality is magnificant. The weight is a little heavy for some, but I think it's fine. It's playability is mind boggling. Plus, I got the "Heritage sunburst" finish. It is absolutely gorgeous. Well worth the extra 100$. Wish it said Gibson on it, just for prestige, but the fact it was made in Asia doesn't detract from how great of a guitar it is. I'm actually playing it as I type this :P.
