How does a longer barrel effect the efficiency of a 98 Custom?

I'm just askin 'cuz someone on Pbnation.com said it would.

Longer barrel = more gas used to propel the ball through it. Simple as that. So it will be less efficient than a shorter barrel, obviously.

Can the barrel talk to the gun and tell him he's a 18 in.? OK! So how does the gun know how long the barrel is?

It doesn't, it just knows how much air is needed to push the ball out of the barrel so that it goes 280 fps or whatever your velocity is at.

You guys do know that the Model 98 uses the same amount of gas on every shot no matter what the velocity is or how long the barrel is?

Think about it:

-You chrono to 280 fps with an 8" barrel (98 stock is around that, isn't it?)

-You then remove the old barrel without adjusting the velocity, and screw in an 18" barrel.

-There is now about 10" of extra barrel, which slows down the ball the whole way. Once you rechrono you'll be shooting far less than the original 280 fps. To compensate, you up the velocity, thus using more air per shot.

Hope that made sense.

No, the model 98 uses the same amount of gas no matter what the velocity. all the velocity adjuster is a skrew that blocks air.

Thats what I was thinkin.....

makes sence to me...

it doesnt sound possible to shoot at move volocity and use same air...air is what increases the speed so more is needed to increas speed. its like a car and gas.

It's like this on a m98 and a 98c the same amount of air is released in one shot. The velocity screw is designed to disrupt air flow not modify the amount of air coming out of the gun, this is why it would also be a good idea to guy a rear velocity adjuster ( RVA ) for your 98 because those adjust spring pressure which lets the bolt hit the release pin harder or softer so it will release more or less air. I'de recommend if you're planning on getting a longer barrel you may want to invest in an rva also.

Also, A5s, Pro-carbines are like this. Basicly, anything using the CVX valve.

Usually if you have a low pressure system a longer barrel will give you good gas efficiency. Plus, the longer the barrel, it will add more range than a short one would.

It doesn't take more air to push a ball out of a 18 in. barrel. If you have a one piece 18" barrel with ports, not only do you loose are, but the ball is slowing down due to the fact that its still touching the barrel. However, 2 piece barrels don't have this problem, the same goes for multi bore barrels.

So, if you have a one piece, the longest it should be is 14".
For 2 piece, it doesn't matter.

Hope this helped:laugh:
