Well if he's in front he leads the attack and if he's in back he commands the front with what he can see. So I'd say you need 2 leaders.

we use two leaders, our captain (me) is the back and my "Lt" is the front man

It's a smart way to play.... Only thing is with my team I make all my guys take turns leading an attack or telegraphing the other teams movement from the back.

My god.....
The captain is simply the person who runs the team. They generally make all major decisions, have the final say when walking the fields, decide when practices are and waht tournaments they are playing, who plays in each tournament, etc.. They don't have any specific role once the ref says "go". They can be back players, front players, whatever. If you want to talk about the guy who makes the calls during the game, that would generally be the center back player, but no, they are not the captain, they are just doing their job.
It truly is evident that all of the good members have left.... All we have now are rec ballers and newbies... psh

I'm a 14 year old tournament player who's been playing paintball for 3 years and apparently is more knowledgeable than everyone else that has posted in this thread.

Don't mind him, it's his time of the month
I wasn't talking about off the field stuff. On the field the Captain is still the Captain and he is looked to for help and guidence. His position is up to where he thinks he can best lead HIS team. If your Captain is merely the guy that signs-up for everything then I show pity. The Captain is the Captain because he is a natural leader. He should be a good player and be the most knowlegable. Not everyone can be a leader, because if they could why would you need one. You would just need a just guy to make the calls and sign up for the tourny's. And that would be him just doing his job. We are only giving our opinion's on where the Captain would be most effective. If you think your ideas are better just post them here and Let us decide if your ideas are helpful. Everyone, newbie or rec has the right to say what they want even if it sounds silly. I'm a Captain and I'm more than a damn Secretary.
P.S.-Please stop flaming on so much :pissed:

Well, I don't mean to flame, but you obviously have not been playing tourney ball very long. No one "leads" the team on the field in the way you speak. The team palys as a team, everyone has their job, and if they do their job right, the team plays as one. The captain does indeed mostly just handle bussiness procedures, sponsorships, arguing calls, etc. No onw has to look to him for advice once they get on the field. They look to him for advice before they walk on the field, that is, when tehy are walking the field. The capatain is simply someone who has been playing paintball a while and is experienced and can maturly handle the tasks of running the team. He's not the one everyone yells to on the field. If you have to talk to your captain and only your captain on the field, I pity YOU. Front players should be talking to everyone, especially their back man. Back players should be watching their front players and the direcetion their shooting and be making sure that the whole team isn't just watching one side of the field, and they should be communicating and relaying how many eliminations they have gotten, who all is still in on their team, and know exactly when to let the front players move. Mid players need to be folowing the front players to know when it's their turn to move into teh front, and they need to be talking to the back players to know where to shoot, and they need to be talking to the front players to know who to shoot at.
Now that I have given you a short course about positions and jobs, please tell me what the captain had to do with that. Nothing. The captain can play anywhere. Hell, the captain dosen't even neccesarily have to play. They jsut handle the bussiness and are knowledgeable enough about the game to know where to put everyone and how they should play when they get there.

Captain or Coach....
Some teams have one, some teams have both.
I totally agree on having someone take care of all the things off the field you listed. And that's exactly how a team should play as. But I don't have a perfect team and I deal with problems. Of course Everyone yells and I hope that all your players have enough experience to make all the decisions themselves. But I don't have that kind of team. I have players that have little experience mixed with high experience levels. Now with new players they have to learn there job and someone helps them with that. And yes even on the field sometimes. Under some of the stress's new players get, I've seen a player completely zone out. He was getting shot at from 3 directions and was just sitting not listening to the commands. I had to run in and set him straight. But I can see how it is anyones job on the field to do that and to help each other out. So in the field when I see mistakes being made I try correct it. I'm not going to yell to a guy with 3 weeks experience on what to do. Even Vets. can make a mistake sometimes. Yes, it does not matter what positions he plays. But I feel he should play one. I understand the way you think. Paintball is a Sport and you see it as Postions and a Coach (Players and a Captain). And like you said a Coach would handle everything off the field and not even play. But he does Coach the players during the game, right? I completely respect your opinons and agree with most of them. It's just The Captain makes it Happen. And I Feel he does it on and off the field. It's just an Opinion.
Thanks for posting all that
but I've said my peace and I'll leave it at that
