When did you last play?
Not much has changed since semis first came out in 1990. Except, everyone shoots more paint, and the fields are smaller.
My recommendation is the Tippmann. Its the most durable, and requires the least maitenence.
But, the Spyders tend to look better, and the cheap electro-spyders can fire faster.
Either way, both are good choices.

Speedball or Rec play? If your going with speed ball I'd say the Xtra over the shutter or Tippmann because its smaller than a tippmann and It has virtical feed and the shutter doesn't. If you not the take apart your gun type then go with the tippmann cause those thing last forever and are like tanks. I have owned both I would go with the Xtra.

Both the xtra and tippmann 98 are good guns, you won't get jipped either way you choose. I personnely think the trigger is lighter on the 98, also it is quieter IMO. The spyder does have a field strip feature, which can come in handy, but hay, just get whatcha like, both are good

shutter is power feed, xtra is vertical feed... whichever is your preference there will decide that. now once you figure that out, try the spyder out then try the tippman & see which one you like better.
