View Full Version : Newbie wants to upgrade -------> Spyder Shutter Java
I just purchased Shutter Java not realizing how much can be upgraded. :eyes:
So I read bunch of reviews and decided to purchase few things.
1. J&J 2-piece 16" barrel
2. Pure Energy (brand?) regulator
3. Bunch of O-rings for CO2
4. 16oz. Aluminum CO2 tank
5. Remote & Harness w/ space for two pods (I know it's small)
6. Spyder spring kit by 32-degrees (have to figure that out)
What else should I upgrade and do? Someone was talking about the chamber, others talked about the bolts becoming loose and so on. I know I need a better gun but for now as a newbie, I'd like to get a feel for having a decent gun & know how to take care of it. Also I'm using PMI's All-Star paintball. Do you recommend other paintball for this Shutter & barrel? Thanks for your help.

well first off i wouldnt get such a long barrel, its not going to be any more accurate than a 14 or 12, just more annoying when trying to stay in a bunker and snap shoot. on my shutter i had a big shot (got one on my new gun too, in my sig) and it is definately IMHO the most accurate barrel on the market, i would say get a lapco big shot. remote? do u feel the need for one? its not really an upgrade its just a preference . . . if u want it go for it. for how much you are going to spend on a remote, co2 tank, and reg. you could get a small nitro tank and have better results. the spring kit is a good idea if you play indoor and outdoor, i had one for my shutter . . . i think your gun will be plenty nice enough to take out other players. think about the upgrades i recomend though, others will mostly agree with me . . .
Is this gun adjustable for fps-wise? Last place I went, the limit was 285fps. I just feel comfortable holding just the 'gun' not the tank also :D

i will go upgrade by upgrade:
1. my friend has one of these on his cocker, i dont think they are worth the money and 16" is way too long. check out the lapco bishot, works great on medium bore paint, ie all stars
2. this isnt a very good reg, my bro has one on his pirhana. use the cash you save from getting the bigshot over the j&j 2 piece and buy a mac dev gladiator with urethane o-rings aka the co2 seal
3. ok, your gonna need o-rings
4. how big is your current tank? might wanna hold off on a new co2 tank and get a cheap nitro tank, they can be bough for under $100 on ebay brand new, search for "68 3000" buy one of the PMI fiber wrapped ones.
5. what brand? i reccomend extreme rage and redz packs. your gonna want a quality pack because comofort is extremely important
6. why do you need a spring kit? there is no reason for a spring kit unless you really need to replace your stock springs which isnt likely unless you are running an LP setup which you are not.
you can adjust the velocity via the little metal circle thing on the back right under the beavertail. might wanna buy some dye sticky grips, they make holding the marker much more comfortable. another thing i would suggest is if you cant afford to buy an upgrade, just wait until you can afford the higher end model, you will thank yourself later. i know i kinda regret some of my purchases.

the spring kit is because its much easier than changing the reg and velocity, i have an outdoor spring and an indoor spring . . . and yes the gun is adjustable fps and PSI wise, to adjust the reg, you have to use an allen key in the little screw to right of the gauge on the reg. in for lower psi out for higher psi. to fine tune the veloctity use the velocity adjuster (what an idea) screw it in to higher it, out to lower it . . . and the big shot and small nitro tank are your best bet for upgrades.
i also have extreme rage harness (not the tank kind just a 4v) but its a super nice harness for a great price, its rellay comfortable and secure when moving
:D Awesome...thanks guys...I'll play around with it and do the needed upgrades here and there.
I heard people are starting go with remotes. Is that true? It just seems little easier aiming wise, when I played with 9oz on the back of Tippman, it just felt very awkward, movement wise, maybe it's the way paintball is meant to be played. Like I said I'm a newbie :D (l337 player in Counter-Strike )

1. J&J 2-piece 16" barrel
It's a good barrel, yes, but 16"? You can buy the tips to get it as short as 10", however, that's going to cost more... The Bigshot, as many have said, is tried and true. Definitely a good barrel, and for around $50. Might also want to look at CP and DYE barrels...
2. Pure Energy (brand?) regulator
You can definitely get better, for more though. If you don't have an anti siphon, I would recommend (As pr0kch0p said) a Gladiator with CO2 seals, or the Palmer Male Stabalizer.
3. Bunch of O-rings for CO2
Good choice. You'll always need o-rings... ;)
4. 16oz. Aluminum CO2 tank
I would personally save up for N2, and use the CO2 tank that you have, but it's your choice...
5. Remote & Harness w/ space for two pods (I know it's small)
You might want to think again about the remote space. First of all, you'd need the remote itself. ;) I used to use a remote, then ditched it, because I just didn't like the feel of it... I say go play with somebody's remote, that way you can tell if you want it or not. Personally, a remote makes the gun too light, IMO, and you don't have anything to shoulder and keep a steady gun. Anyways, I really would recommend the Redz packs. They're very comfortable, but they do bounce, unlike what many people say... If you really want a remote, go with a Flex-Tech, they're around $30-$35...
6. Spyder spring kit by 32-degrees (have to figure that out)
A spring kit is a good idea. Get either that one, or the Maddmann, both are great spring kits, from what I know. My personal experience with the Maddmann spring kit has been good...

J&J 2 piece is ok but you can get better accuracy with a terminator for much less a 32 degrees term is like $35 or if you like shiny get an eliminator (they are esentially the same just one black one nikle plate)
pmi reg is a nice reg for not much money. yes some others are nicer but it is a good reg.
yeah get the o-rings
16 oz tank if you want to stick with co2 and a remote go ahead and get a 20 they are often cheaper than 16 oz tanks.
Basiclly remotes are the same but stay away from the micro line ones i have seen many many break. Also stay away from 32 degrees rhino delux pack it will fall apart.
spring kit good
also get a low pressure valve this will allow you to run at a lower operating pressure and make your gun quieter.
When i ran remote on my spyder i liked to use a gas through stock you might or might not.
I also recommend a good sight like the armson pro dot (i know no one uses sights anymore that is why they use 800 paint balls to get 1 or 2 elinimations.) Seriously though most ppl don't use sights because it takes a while to find your target with some sights not so with the pro dot it is point and shoot.
