i dunno if i was lucky or what, but i have nailed a couple people playing w/ cockers using my spyder compact. the things i had added to it were:
-AKA Lightning Bolt ( an awesome bolt)
-a better barrel ( i was just using a stock tl+ barrel, but i would recommend a dye, lapco or j&j)
-expansion chamber
-i replaced my trigger spring w/ a lighter one from a ballpoint pen, and polished my hammer and sear.
-i play remote too
oh yeh and id also reccomend a shocktech main spring kit

just upgrade your stock barrel; go with a dye boomstick and I'll sell you one: 12" 68.6 bore $75

playing with GOOD people with cockers doesn't mean that you need a nice gun; it means you need skill. If you have an upgraded gun, but can't use it to it's full potential, then there's no point in having that tricked out gun. First, concentrate on skill, and as you get better, upgrade your gun. You Spyder Comp can be a very nice gun, but don't go spending like 400 dollars into it when you've just started out. Play a few times, then maybe get a barrel. Slowly upgrade your gun as your skill increases.

Yes, it is mainly the player, not the gun. However, if you're totin' a cheap pump, and some newbie's got an Angel, Revolution hopper, huge a** harness, and all that shiznit, that's a BIG difference. If that situation does occur, I'd say that even if you're quite skilled, you have a very good chance of being taken out. The newbie may realize that he'd outgun you easily and just start blazin' away at you. Yes, I will say that overall it is the player, not the gun. However, when you have that huge of a difference, I'd say the gun helps a lot. A guy on my field refs and will swear by his Phantom. He doesn't seem like he'd use anything else. Yes, he is a good player, however, often times I see him walking off the field 'cause he got outgunned by a semi. Also, I am NOT dissing pump play, I love it, but I'd much rather play semi considering playing a pump against semi automatics is pretty stupid.

Sorry, forgot my list... :)
I'd say to start with a Java Spyder Compact 2000. Here's a list of upgrades and some info:
In order of position to get:
1. Barrel - CP, Lapco, SP, DYE, all great choices
2. 12 volt Revolution - Feeding/chopping problems? No more!
3. Get a double trigger frame, if you don't have one, make sure it also has both inline and staggard holes.
4. Get a trigger job, I can do one for cheap, Polecat Paintball can also do a REALLY nice one for $20 + shipping. If you want me to do it for cheap, catch me on AIM, my screen name is Hsuve.
3. Remove venturi from the bolt, get an AKALMP Lightning bolt, or get a Shocktech Delrin Quickstrip bolt and drill out the center
4. Drill out the vertical adapter if you use a compact Spyder, or get an AKALMP Compact Mitey-Max
5. Get a turbo valve, any will do, make sure it has an aftermarket valve pin though.
6. Get high flowing hoses, macrolines or steel braided hoses are GREAT
7. Polish your bolt and striker
8. Get a regulator - If you use CO2, get the Palmer Stabilizer, period. If you use N2, choose whichever regulator you want, the Vigilante is a really nice one for cheap but performs excellent.
9. Polecat straightfeed or vertical feed body
You can get practically any barrel at a low cost at http://www.paintballbarrels.com
12 volt Revolutions are sold at http://www.predator-paintball.com for like $47.99 in black
You can get different double trigger frames at http://www.g3pb.com
You can get a nice trigger job from Polecat, or you can have me do one. By the way, I do have good feedback from some people that say I won't rip you. I'm an honest person!
To remove the venturi from the bolt, heat up the back of the venturi a bit, then take a nice, good pair of pliers, get a good grip on it, and turn counter-clockwise. The AKALMP Lightning bolt is $52.50 at http://www.g3pb.com
The Shocktech Delrin Quickstrip bolt is $39.99, or something like that at http://www.paintballonline.com (my local store)
Drilling the vertical adapter applies ONLY to the compact Spyders, if you have a standard, skip this part. To drill the vertical adapter remove expansion chambers, regulators, the low pressure chamber, screws of any sort from it. Take the drill, put in the bit that's just slightly larger than the hole that leads into the LPC area. Drill the hole from the opposite side of where the LPC screws in. That way you don't have to mess around with threads and perhaps even mess up the threads of the LPC. After enlargening that hole, take the next larger bit and drill it again. Drill the hole with 3 bits, one just larger than the other. On the bottem where the expansion chamber, gas-through forgrip, or regulator is, don't enlargen that hole. From where the hole is, drill a new hole 90 degrees to the right of where the hole is. After that, drill a hole 90 degrees to the left of where the original hole is. Make sure not to go too far forward, for if you do, you'll mess up the threads to the LPC area.
The AKALMP Compact Mitey-Max can be bought for $52.50 at http://www.g3pb.com
Turbo valves can be bought by your local store, probably. If not, http://www.g3pb.com has some.
I'm sure your local store has different hoses, if not, go scream down their necks telling them to save their money and quit the business.
To polish your internals, use 800+ grit sand paper and sand your bolt and striker, DO NOT use coarse sand paper. You want fine grit sand paper so you don't take off too much material. Just sand the two parts until they're shiny, no more, no less.
http://www.predator-paintball.com has a good number of regulators, at GREAT prices. They don't have the Palmer Stabilizer though... The Stabilizer can be bought at http://www.g3pb.com
The Polecat straightfeed is basically a mod that changed your feed tube to that of a 'Cockers. It's vented so it minimizes/eliminated blowback. It's great for left handed people as it moves the hopper to the right side, and with it you can finally look over the top of your gun. It's something like $50 + shipping for installation and the black version of the feed, it's around $55 + shipping for installation and the chrome feed. It's nice and it's worth it, in my opinion. They won't rip you by taking your gun and never sending it back either, though the web site isn't the greatest, the work is EXCELLENT. I believe the company email is ferret@polecatpaintball.com. There are two kinds of vertical feed bodies, one is the AKALMP VLM body. The production on those have ceased, however, if you're lucky, you may find one around. They take 'Cocker barrels and 'Cocker ASAs, they take Spyder internals though (duh! ). They also use the larger strikers, so if you have a compact body Spyder, you have to go get the older kind of striker. The second vertical feed body is the Bob Long one. I believe that they've stopped making the compact ones, meaning if you get a Bob Long vertical feed body, you'll need a standard Spyder vertical adapter, and the larger version striker. I don't know, but there might still be some compact Bob Long vertical feed bodies out there...

Yes, I have posted that before. At first I was typing out the list for some guy at another forum, however, after seeing the length of it, I decided to save it and when people need help with upgrading, I just repost it.
