its all up to him, but the price might take him away for it, go to a5ownersgroup.com for info on the a5, theyll be more than happy to help you with the a5.

Seems like your friend really needs to think about why he actually wants the A5. If he buys it because of how it looks and doesn't know a single thing about it, he most likely wont be able to take care of it and he'll end up hating it in the end. He needs to do some more research on what he really wants and why, before he spends money on something he may regret in the end.
Personally, i haven't had any experience with the A5. So i can't really tell you what i think of it. He may be better off getting someting like a 98c for a first marker because it is less complicated and those 98c's are built like tanks.
As for the spyder vs. tippman thing, both are good markers to start out with, and it basically comes down to preference. Does he want a more compact, flashier marker(think speedball) or something a little more traditional(think woodsball)? I hate to place the markers into types of play, but that's what it usually boils down to anyways when it comes to first markers. Most people who plan to play speedball often will get a spyder for their first marker. And most people who plan to play woods often get a tippmann. Probably because of the way the markers are designed.

I'd have to disagree on 98 custom being simpler than an A-5. I've seen both completly apart (friends own both) and the A-5 is much easier to take apart and maintain. Says so on tippmanns site aswell. 98C the marker comes in half to get at the internals, the A-5 has field strip pins.
Other than that Rancid is right. For my 2 cents, try to just handle the marker, ie: go to a pro shop and feel it in your hands and see if its comfortable.

As long as the price is right, an A-5 is a fine gun for a newb, so long as he maintains it. It's good starting out, simple to use, and has room for upgrades (especially GTA stuff like flatline, rt, e-grip) that can make it competitive with higher-end guns like cockers and mags (once he becomes skilled enough).
I'm still a bit of a newb, but back when I was a supernoob, the most annoying thing was dry firing when my hopper jammed. I would have taken the Cyclone feed system as a blessing back then.

I think that's the major strength of the A-5. It can still perform well, even if it's not taken care of at all.

I was not impressed with the A5 for the dollar value. He could buy something better for that coin.

but it can be easily fixed with some sort of expansion chamber or reg and i think that the a5 is definutley harder to take apart even thoug the a5 has field strip friends but it still has several srews to disasemble it
