The most effective way I know to do this is to unscrew the tank about 3/4 rotations out, cock the gun, and shoot straight CO2 until the gun does not have enough pressure to recock. Then unscrew the tank the rest of the way out and no CO2 will escape. What this does when you partially unscrew the tank is allow the valve on the tank to shut without breaking the seal with ASA port (where the tank screws into). When you fire off the CO2, you are letting out the air that is trapped between the ASA port and the valve on the gun, such as the air still left in the hose. Hope this helps.

spend 10$ and get an on/off valve for your tank
