Beginners shouldn't spend to much money for a gun but you want something that is at least ok.

You can get a spyder compact 2000 for under $100.00 that is a fair starter marker.

I say don't go over $250 for a marker package ... most stores sell the marker, mask, goggles, tank, hopper and maybe a couple other "Must Have" accessories that way.
Spyders, Tippman, Piranah and any other number of Spyder Clones are a good way to start. If you're just looking for a marker, without any other stuff, I still would keep to the $250 limit, that gives a wide range or entry level and "novice" level markers to choose from, while not breaking you're wallet too bad.
Or, like Creek said, find a good used marker, but I'd be kinda leery of buying used equipment online ... unless you're absolutely sure that the seller is legitimate.

That was not my fault I posted the first one and when I came back after about an hour it had disappeared. So I reposted it. After I reposted it the first one reapppeared. I asked about this in the question forum, but they have not said why they thought this happened.

Only if the newbie is forkin out his own cash, then i say "what the heck, let him decide how mush HE'LL pay, as long as he'd payin it". If the mommys payin it, then $200 is the tops. Hey if the kid has $450 and wants an imp, let him get an imp. As long as teh kid is comfertable with the gun, let him get it. we can't tell a newbie with an autococker that he shouldn't of bought it cause it's 'too good for him' (unless he's a horrible player that doesn't even deserve to play with a BE! AHHHHHHHH thats scary!   ) becuase hey, he might have a good shot! Plus a better gun gives one more self confidence (i think ;)).

You make a good point, but I guess the reason I say $250 limit, well, $250 is probably not that much to spend to realize later that Paintball ain't your bag. probably the best thing to do, if your a newbie and your not sure, is use rental equipment the first couple of times, and then, if you're addicted, get a marker and your own equipment.

I think the cocker is a great newbie gun personally, if he can take the time to read and learn about the gun. It's got great performance stock, and it could stick with the person through their whole paintball career, and end up as a tricked out tourney gun. Though it does bug me as well to see kids with guns they didnt work for, if he's cool about it, I guess he's alright. I myself know someone who started out with one of the original cockers, and he's put so much into the gun, he's still got it today, and it's absolutely tricked out exactly how he wants it, and it's a great gun.
