There is nothing wrong with a stock 2k1. You can compete just as well with that over any other gun. Most people upgrade their cockers in the semi-blind belief that it will give them one hair's width of an edge over the competition (which in most cases it does). I personally would rather have a lesser gun and greater skill. If you go a practice even if on a semi-regular basis, you will quickly overcome any advantage a cocker upgrade will give them.
Upgrades are also used to fullfill certain technical requirements, I want my cocker shooting under 300 (It shoots 225) because the local field is FPO and it is massively brittle. I need a gun that is LOW pressure to make my gun nice to the paint. You can only turn a stock cocker down so far, past that I upgraded some of the key internals and whatnot.
If you do get upgrades (nothing wrong either way) then decide what you want to accomplish before you start.
Stuff I would upgrade right away: barrel.
Stuff that I would upgrade not to long after: Valve
That's basically it. Stock 2k1's are just a hair behind STO's.
