for a smart parts impulse, is it better to use HPA or co2?

HPA is better on ANY paintball marker.

Oh defiantly. Impulse are made to work pretty well on CO2 unlike many other paintball markers.

nitro is better, but co2 will work GREAT. I was getting +/- 3 fps and 1500-1700 shots off my 20 oz co2.
