You can try and buy a used gun through a store thats safer. If you cant do that just ask other trades/buyers about the person whos selling to see if he is reliable. You could always just sue him for mail fraud when he doesnt send you your money.;)

I would check for feedback from the guy. Alot of good feedback usually means he is pretty reliable.
You can also do a third party service like the one that Palmers does. Check out thier website for more info.
I have been trading/buying/selling for a long time, and I have had very good results with the exception of maybe 2 bad transactions (probably 200 or more transactions total). People know that they are legally accountable, and most people are not out to scam you.
Most of us work hard for our money; if you are really that scared, you can buy through a store. There is a still a chance, though, that you might get hosed in the end(lost mail, damaged/defective, accounting/shipping errors, ect..). its really a gamble, but more times than not you are going to come out on top.

I'd recomend a third party service such as Palmer.
I did one through a local store, contacted the store first, confirmed it, etc and we traded. No problems.

If you're on the east coast, try Adrenalin for 3rd party transactions. It's $25, so thats $13 each. Not worth it for little things, but on the big stuff, it might be worth it to you.
Also, send your money via Money Order. Then you atleast have a paper trail in the event that you do need to take legal action. It's about $5 to send one, but, again, it may be worth the assurance to you.

well just send money order
you can do it at your post office
its like .90 cents to send one. + how much your paying and the mail fee...
so if you bought something 20 bucks, you would give the post office $20.90 + stamps...
if you go air mail it will cost more etc...

COD is always a good option.
Im glad i used it about a month ago, or i would have been out 230 for a POS cocker.

I usually trade via money orders. I make it a point to research the person I'm trading with in advance, and while in the negotiation stage of the deal, I ask all the questions that need to be asked, specifically if everything is in full working condition and go over all the little details of the trade (whats included, what works, how many etc etc etc), that way I know what I'm getting, and if they're trying to lie to me, they have to scramble with information. :D

I have connections to criminal investigations on Ebay now so if someone tries to pull something like that with me.

Asked him if u can use a third party with him. If u dont wnat to go that way ask him to pay with paypal. If he says no or give you excuses dont buy from him. I think those would be a good way to go.

Worst comes to worst, since every other option was listed already, talk to them through AIM and DIRECT CONNECT with them (click the little picture icon in the IM window), write down their IP address. Then if something goes wrong, you can report it and they can trace it to the source, (where they live). You have to have a firewall to do this the easy way though, like McAffee or Norton. If you have one, just click start-run- type CMD-and type "netstat" without the "s. That will give you the IP. Just make sure your directly connected or else it won't work. And obviously do this BEFORE you do the trade, because if he jacks you I don't think he will just go around directly connecting with you...too obvious.

Another good aproach is to demand the person use USPS to ship, and you do the same. That way if they do rip you off, they are also facing federal Mail fraud charges.
