Rules to Play By

When you play paintball for the first time, you’re going to make mistakes. We all did and we all still do. Knowing this will help you avoid the shock: the feeling that you are a “paintball magnet” who is hopelessly awful at this game. The thing is not to get bent out of shape if things don’t go well during your first couple of games. Mistakes early on are definitely expected and will turn into learning opportunities. You can memorize the following tips and recite them every day, but still not improve your game. That’s because you have to play the game to get good at it. The key to becoming a good paintball player is quite simple, play the game. Then play it again, and again and again. Experiment with being Defensive and aggressive, and take different positions. Above all, play the game for the fun of it. This is, after all, the main point, and it just so happens that having fun will make you demand more of yourself every time.

- The very first rule is never EVER take off your goggles! This can’t be stressed enough. Taking off your mask can be very detrimental to your visions health. A paintball traveling at 10 feet per second would easily pop your eye out of your head. Even in designated areas, look around yourself to make sure there isn’t some doofus waving an “uncorked” gun. PLUS- as soon as you get off the field of play, put a barrel plug in the end of your barrel and switch on the safety. If you see someone waving a gun around that doesn’t have a barrel plug in, remind them to put one in immediately.

- Paintballs do not hurt when they hit. Well, sometimes they hurt a little bit, but usually they sting for just a moment. You won’t feel sore till the next day. I have found that paintballs that hit you and don’t break hurt a little more because they hit and bounce off. (for all you wannabe nerds out there, the impulse equation from physics that justifies this) When it does break, it is in contact with you longer and is cushioned by your skin, and fat.

- Wear dark clothes: don’t wear white. White is just to bright, you will be too easy to spot and eliminate.

- Wear some type of boots or comfortable running shoes. Some people prefer football or soccer cleats. They are comfortable, light, quick, and provide excellent traction in grass and mud. A lot of paintball players are using cleats these days.

- Always be honest. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen players get hit and not step off the field. If you get hit and see the splat on you, please raise your hand and exit the game. Redeem yourself in the next game; theres always a next game. People who try to wipe their paint off and think they can get away with it are simply lame. Ask yourself if being portrayed as a loser is worth staying in the game. When everybody knows you’re a cheater, you’ll find it increasingly hard to find anyone who wants to play with you.

-Don’t ever call an advanced paintball player a cheater. They hate that, and take their games really seriously. No matter what happens, don’t do this. That is how seriously some people take their game. They are mostly very honest, down to earth people. But, sometimes they’ll respond less than graciously. And it just isn’t worth it. If any player or advanced player cheats on the regular basis, talk to the referee between games.

-Don’t be afraid to ask or learn. Even with the amount of information technology available these days, their is no substitute for asking questions on the field. There are certain basic things that more experienced players can clarify for the beginner.(tactical stuff, and bits of info. that may make a difference in playing)

-Be alert and never focus too much on one thing. Don’t keep shooting at the same guy behind the same bunker over and over again. Move on and surprise him from the side or another angle.

-Don’t stay in the same place for too long.
If you are in a fort, don’t keep shooting from the same side forever. It’s not productive. Go to the other end; go to the second level. Move away from the bunker, walk out unprotected and hold people down. Don’t stay put.

-Never give up. Whether you run out of air, paint or energy, just don’t ever stop or quit. You are still useful. No one has to know that you are on your last leg.

-Never call yourself dead if you are unsure. If you question whether a shot hit you and splatted, call a paintcheck and the referee will find out if you’ve been eliminated. Don’t just call yourself out because you felt a hit. Wait for the referee to confirm.

This is just something I thought I could put up to help out :)

Kudos on the effort for a sticky, but the Ultimate Sticky has pretty much all this info somewhere in there...but good job anyway.

Don't blow a ton of $$ on paintball gear right off the bat because paintball ain't cheap. Just get the necessities because:
1) you might end up with extra, useless gear &/or
2) realizing all that expensive stuff didn't automatically make you a highly skilled player may discourage you to the point of quitting.

and for all money-saving tips, contact your friendly neighborhood nerdcore.

no, I read this paintball book, and pieced it together using tips from their and my own experience. It took me awhile to do, I did little by little each day.
