yes but don't get one if you play speedball. also, maintinance is hard. (no field stripping)

The M98 can last a long time as can Spyders and Piranhas. I dont like M98's IMO. They are Loud and Innacurate. I suggest goin with a Spyder Compact with a CP barrel for the same price

I was playing Friday night at one of the local hyperball fields, and just about every M98 that was there made an admirable showing. My only thought was that I need an expansion chamber, it was at night and about 50 degrees.
I have a Psychoballistics drop forward, and an Autospirit. It wasn't too difficult to get shots lined up around obstacles.\
Of course, a minimag RT would be nice, but I don't have that kind of money. ;)

My friend Ted has a 98 custom with a 16" Stealth and Pb dropforward, he was lighting up several veteran players before getting eliminated himself. He and I have only played about 5 times. Plus there were two tourney players there using Tippmann 98 customs that they've had supped up. I'm talking RT, Rocket Cock, unidentified RVAs, custom paintjobs, a set of barrels to match just about any size paint (don't know why they didn't just get Freaks :) ) Pb dropforwards, polished internals ....

My own opinion, don't judge Tippmanns by the field rentals. Find a person with a Tippmann, find a person with a Spyder, see if they'll let you play with their gun for a match and decide which one you want. My opinion is, Tippmanns aren't as heavy or long as people would have you believe, and Spyders don't fall apart as fast as others would have you believe.

I don't like the length and the shape. I would hate using an m98 for speedball.

the 98 custom is one of the best guns you can buy for the money. its durable(dont even ask what mine's been through), fairly accurate(very good accuracy with a better barrel), has a really good c02 system w/ very few leaks, and you can find pretty good deals on them(i got mine from www.xpaintball.com).

the only real drawbacks are the maintenance is a pain in the *** and if you want to upgrade it you'll be hard-pressed for cash. just to get a response trigger is like 80 bucks from tippmann direct. maintenance isnt so bad once you do it a couple of times, and you can order upgrade parts off of ebay or something and get pretty good deals on them.

whatever you do, dont lose the ball catch(the little orange rubber thing that holds the balls back in the chamber). My friend lost his and you can't get it replaced and you can't make your own that easily and without it you fire like 8 balls at once.

man this is getting long...In conclusion, its a good gun for the money, and it lasts a while, but tippmann doesnt have the greatest customer service, and the gun takes some getting used to.

Yes the 98 is a very durable and reliable marker just like every other tippmann that has been made. They don't always make them to look nice (some people think tippmanns are ugly) but for functionality purposes they are where its at in the world of blowback markers. Why do you think that tippmann use to get awards for marker of the year. Fields would use them cause newbies could do almost anything to them and they would still work. So for the money you can't go wrong.

In my opinion, the Model 98 custom is the best gun you can get for under $300. Since it costs well under that, it's definitely a great buy. As for speedball: you can definitely use it as a speedball marker. It's a bit longer than some guns, but a drop forward could help shorten it up.

I think you may be mistaken... Tippmann is renowned for their exemplary customer service. They will most likely send you small parts free if you call them.

Actually you can get a replacement ball latch from Tippman or most pro shops.

The Tippman m98 is VERY good if you are getting into paintball.

It's on the very good side of accurate ( only if you purchase a aftermarket barrel I reccomend the 14" Smart Parts All American. With that it cannot be beat. Cept by a Cocker with a boomsick heheh)

It is also very durrable although the valve or the internals might be brake or be fault (like my m98 after 10 or so games) in that case if you ship it to tippmann the will fix it ABSOLUTLEY FREE and ship it FREE and return it in like a week! I was amazed. They have good service.

Don't get the m98 if you are really serious about paintball. If you are very serious about paintball and want to do tourneys and play like 10 or more times a month or want a high rate of fire I suggest going with a Autococker or an Automag.

If you have ALOT of money buy an Autococker, a Automag, or an Electric gun. But always start off with a good gun like a tippman Model 98!!

All in all the m98 is a good gun. I would highly recomend it!

hope I helped... :blah:

ps. A really good site to get m98 stuff is www.countypaintball.com I have personally ordered from them and they are great!...BUY STUFF THERE THEY RULE!

www.m98center.com have alll kinds of info about the model 98...CHECK IT OUT!

I just ordered a 98 custom.... I used to have a sheridan equalizer and it worked great for about a year... then it began to shoot poorly... then it began to leak... and after 3 years of pitiful use it died on saturday. However, my friend's gun is a Tippmann 68 carbine..... about 4 years old... it still works great and has been run over by a car as well as dropped into a puddle and on more concrete than god.... I do trust tippmann as a very reliable gun.... thats what i was looking for.... And i hope it is! :eyes:

Same experiences here. I use to own a tippmann prolite that was about quiet old. The guy I bought it fom had totally abused it so I got it for a great deal. It took me about 6 hours of polishing and I had to redo the inside of my barrel but it worked great. Then oe day I was running in the woods with it and I jumped over this log. Far be it form me to see the branch sticking up on the other side. It caught on my foot and I fell. I landed straight on the gun and snapped the front to screw mounts that hold the grip onto the body of the gun. One side had broken compleatly off and the other was still intact. amazingly enough it still workd, shot and everything. I ordered another grip and when it didn't come in I just said screw it, the gun still works so why not use it how it is. So to whoever is thinking about buying any type of tippmann marker, they will take all the abuse you can give them.

Yes, the Tippmann 98 Custom is a great gun. They are also great for speedball. Once you get one, you'll never have to buy another gun. If you start getting into smaller local tournaments, a 98 with just a few minor upgrades is just fine. But if you really start to get heavy into tournament play, there are even more upgrades that will make the 98 perform as well as any top tournament gun.
For example, here is my setup.

Tippmann 98 w/vertical feed & KAPP high rise
EM98 Electronic kit
PMI dropforward
PMI THOR Regulator
Pure Energy 88cu.in. 4500
Ricochet 2K
Freak Barrel Kit

With this setup I can keep up with any other gun on the field with no problems. The great thing is all the questions I get from other players about my gun.

Its easy to knock 98's. They're usually rental guns you cant anno with crappy stock barrels and a shape most people dont like.

BUT its probably the best gun in its range.

My 98 Custom RT-LP has gained the respect of countless cocker/angel/bushy/imp/shocker/mag owners.

A 98 setup correctly will hold its ground with any other marker. I know because I'v done it.

I play on a regular basis with about 10 guys, and we have a mixture of guns between us. Custom 98's, ProCabine's, Auto Cockers, Spyders, and BushMasters. (if i spelt them wrong, sorry).

At any rate, I think the 98 is a great Marker. Out of all the guns, this is the only one that never has any problems. (just so you know, this is what i have). I have never had a ball break, and I have never had any problems with it.

I would recommend getting a new barrel, it will improve your accuracy a great deal.

BTW: even when i come up against the Auto Cockers and Bushmasters (which can and do fire a LOT faster than my 98), they are the ones who are always running.
