I've got a Shutter w/ no upgrades, right out of box. Everytime I fire it make a big clank clank clank noise. What can I do to make it more quiet? If I got a new barrel, would that make much of a differance?

its a blowback marker, it will ALWAYS be loud...

So is there anything at all that will help to soften it a little, I know it will never be silent but there's gotta be something.

new barrels help. Smart Part Barrels are gennerally quiet.
also switching to HPA helps silent it a little too.you don't get the "ping" that you do with CO2

a new barrel with more porting will help the noise created BY the stock barrel when firing. some low pressure (LP) mods might help a little too but not much.
when the trigger is pulled, the sear releases the striker which springs forward, striking the valve & valve pin (clank!). the bolt is pulled forward at the same time which scuffs along the insides a bit (shchoomp!). the paintball is now launched forward (poomf!). then the air pressure forces the striker back (fwoomp!) which grazes the sear (shing!) then catches (chank!). if there's an e-grip, add a *click* to the mix.
all that happens in an instant so it becomes one big *kachank!* with every trigger pull.
in other words, it's too much metal on metal contact (the exception being an aftermarket delrin or nylon bolt) to quiet the marker sufficiently.

awesome description nerdcore! that's exactly how it sounds. So I should look into getting a non-metalic bolt?

sure. it'll eliminate the shchoomp plus solve the little problem of the stock bolt scafing the innards (which does no real harm - some people just don't like it).

any recommendations on what type of material I should get?
nerdcore

either delrin or nylon. currently those are the only non-metal alternatives (off the wall has a bolt coming soon that has an almost rubbery front end).
delrin is said to swell from any liquids left on it for long periods of time (paint from ball chops, for example). nylon is said to not swell & provide the same benefits as delrin.
delrin - shocktech supafly bolt (http://store.yahoo.com/actionvillage/011-4020-476.html)
nylon - bandit bolt (http://www.mustangpaintball.com/bolts/spyder.html)
bandit makes bolts for all spyders (as well as many other markers), even for the one-hit-wonder em1.

is the noise in your tank?
ToiletCommander
12-08-2003, 02:27 PM
u guys are the shiznit, no I'm pretty sure my tank isn't making any noise, plus its brand new.
Edit: What's the difference between the long and short superfly? Does it just depend on what type of gun you have?

Yeah that's what I would ask. It could be your tank is amplifying the rest of the noise created by your marker and vibrating. I only managed to fix that by running remote, but there are some silencing mods such as putting rubber between your bottom line and grip frame.

I've Heard These Do Well For The Sound.. If You Want To Invest It, Although I Don't Personally Have Any Experience With It. http://www.pbreview.com/products/reviews/1183/

co2 tanks do have that *ping*, since there's liquid in there. kinda like filling a steel mixing bowl 1/3 full of water, then get the water swishing around& knock the bowl's edge with a spoon. FuNkY sounds.
long superfly is for xtras, shutters, e99s, etc, where the back of the bolt sticks out the back of the marker (hence the necessity for a beavertail).
the short one is for victors, imagines, electras, etc. that have that vizion cocking.
at least i think that's the difference.

Yeah go with the bandit bolt. I bought one about three weeks ago and it made my amg a heck of a lot quieter. Its a great choice because it doesnt wear hardly. I have shot 5,000 rounds through mine and it doesnt even have a scratch
You can hardly tell ive even taken it out of the package.

good to know. makes me feel even better about ordering an em1 bolt from them soon.:)

It sounds like its my stock bolt that's making most of the noise, but my tank might also be contributing a little.

my old spyder electra was actually as quit as my bro's cocker. i had an all american on mine and he has a freak. my other friend with a boomstick on his cocker commented on how quit mine was too.
now my omen is loud, but i don't care because it owns.:D

There is also a company making bolts out of a nylon hybrid called nylatron. You can find them on ebay and they are not too expensive $20-30.

also try lighting the hammer by using a titanium hammer.

I just realized something. I've played about 3 times w/ my marker out of the box and never oiled the bolt. Do you guys think that would help?

is it easy to take a shutter apart if you're a newbie? I guess I'll follow the instructions on that ottersc webpage.

taking apart any spyder is easy.
I did it by accident when I was a n00b....some things never change.
