View Full Version : Feeling Pretty Good

I just got out of a conversation with a co-worker... It's pretty slow at work right now - being just before the holidays, and all. She was really afraid to let her 16 year old son play paintball. Her son is legally blind in one eye, and she was afraid he'd loose his other while playing paintball. She had heard all of these horror stories about paintball, and the fact that the kid across the street from her lost an eye playing outlaw ball in somebody's back yard didn't help (evidently he was shot while not wearing a mask).

The conversation must have lasted about 45 minutes and I basically just filled her in on how safe the sport can be if it's played safely, especially when played on legitimate PB fields. I referred her to two of the fields I've played on in the area, and let her no that the refs that work there are very good, and very safety conscious. I also referred her to a local pro shop that I like. She started asking about equipment, because her husband wanted to go out and buy some for their son. So I explained, at length, the tolerances of goggle systems, how the work, how well they protect the eyes, temples, and ears, and which masks are considered to be the best choices. I also told her that the mask should really be the first thing they look for anyway, regardless of their son's vision. She was worried about him getting shot with his mask off, so I told her about when and where people are allowed to take off their masks, and how the refs at the fields I've played on really enforce these rules... we barely touched on buying a marker - which I was rather surprised about, since that is usually one of the first things that comes up.

Anyway, long story short: after discussing safety, masks, safety, velocity, refs, safety, paint and legitimate PB fields she was taking down numbers and hours for fields, names of masks, the number for the pro shop, and she smiled and actually said: "I'm really getting excited about this."

It felt really good to have such a positive influence on someone who had such reservations abut the sport. :D

w00t!

She doesn't live in Randolph, does she? Some ********* in my HS got shot in the eye (or maybe shot himself in the eye-- i forget the story), so apparently that combined with some s shooting up houses/cars on Halloween has stirred up some anti-PB legislation in the town (stuff like no shooting within 400 feet of houses, etc.).

Well, sounds like something for my team to take up.

if my town had limits it wouldn't matter. my paintball marker only sees the inside of my house & the legit fields i play at.

nevertheless, if it did become a city or county issue, i'd be at the town hall meetings for sure.

Im glad you could tell her of the safety. This kid i know shot himself in the eye (he looked down the barrel with no goggles on), and that was the first thing my mom brought up when i wanted to purchase my marker.

Good Job! I've been thinking about holding some kind of marker safety demonstration in my town as part of my community service hours... do you guys know if working at the local paintball store for community service hours is also any good?

Hey guys, thanks for all of the positive feed back. :D

BTW - I just want to apologize for all of the egregious spelling errors in my original post (I just re-read it and found a bunch more that I missed earlier) : the Spell Check script wasn't working for me this morning when I typed it. :|

Good Job, great way to bring new-comers to the positive side of the sport..

See when the kids going for the firs time, try to meet him at the field, show him what to do, what not to do...

I got my dad to paintball with us a couple of times. I think he liked it. And he's a 49 year old farmer.

I got an inter-office phone call form the co-worker I was speaking to yesterday... She is completely gung ho on this :D She's called every field I recommended... plus a few that I hadn't (she's been doing her own research  ) and wanted to know if I had heard anything good or bad about the refs and the fields' safety regulations. She's trying to find a good field that her son and husband can go to next weekend (unfortunately I won't be able to join them).

...I'm just amazed. This woman went from being extremely nervous to being damned near obsessed over night. She even mentioned trying to organize a larger outing in the coming weeks. :D

I'm hoping her son's first time out goes well.
