A friend of mine has a new Syder TL Plus...it has a beaver tail. What is it good for? To protect the cocking bolt as you pull it back?

More to protect your face from getting smashed if that bolt were to ever dislodge while firing.

even if it doesn't get dislodged you still don't want to sight down your barrel pull the trigger and the bolt smash your goggles

Plus to keep people in tourneys from "firing hot."

On a gun like a TL, the beavertail is simply there to keep the bolt from hitting you in the arm, mask, ect.
On a cocker, a beavertail is to keep you from being able to slam the back of your cocking rod. Slamming your cocking rod will raise your velocity over the legal limit, which isnt allowed or safe.

Yeah, you need a beavertail in tourneys on a blowback or you arent allowed to compete. Unless, your bolt doesnt come back any further than the section underneath the bolt (usually where the hammer is housed). Chances are you wouldnt hit yourself in the face though, because the bolt starts in the back position, so you'd have to rest the bolt against your face, pull the trigger, then move your face towards your gun real fast to catch the bolt on the way back. And if you do that, you're just stupid :)

Beavertails were originally made for Autocockers for the reason posted earlier by antiramie. The thing with cockers is that you can push against the cocking rod at the same time as pulling the trigger to get a super hot shot. The beaver tail is in place to help prevent people from doing this. Another reason is to protect the fragile cocking rod. You don't want to bend the rod and knock your whole marker out of whack. As for having beavertails on blowbacks, they are useless... just a way to make a marker more appealing and seem like a higher performance marker.

seems if my "blowback" didn't have one.....I would stand the chance of bending my cocking rod.....just the same as if I had one of those super expensive high preformance markers....
even though it is ONLY a cheep POS spyder......

A spyder does not have a cocking rod. It has a bolt that you pull directly, you can't really just bend that on accident.
