why do shockers and various other guns need dow corning 33 lube, what makes it so special?

SHOULD use dow 55, 33 isnt reccomend by dow corning for metal to metal sliding applications, it's actually a bearing lube. 55 is designed specifically for o-ring sliding applications (which is most of the parts in your gun). The reason to use dow silicon grease, is because that it is much thicker than oil, and regular oil will not properly lubricate some guns. Myself I use white lithium, which also works, and is also produces a fairly durable film
