Ok, I'm thinking this could be a sticky. Post all the mistakes a newbie should avoid that you can think of. Here's a few biggies.
DO NOT:
Take your mask off on the field. No matter how fogged or whatever. This IS the NUMBER one rule that newbies like to break.
Pick paint off the ground and put it in your hopper. Shoots sand through your gun. Not good. If you do want to save paint, WIPE IT OFF GOOD! Make sure there's not a grain of sand on it or it can scratch your barrel or internals. Any paint that did not start the day on the field is worthless. I only use paint off the ground if I have just spilled it or know it has been recently shot and I wipe it off well.
Neglect your gun. Remember to oil it and clean it. If you take care of it, it will take care of you.
Buy a cocker or above for your first marker. Even pros are intimidated by the sheer complexity of these things. Get a blowback like a Spyder or Piranha. I have a Spyder. Works great.
Stay away from Brass Eagle. Their guns are not easily upgradable, have funny barrel threads, and perform poorly in my experiance.
Be afraid of getting shot. If you're going to play paintball you will eventually get shot. It's really not that bad, until you get to the pro level where people do "bunkering" and end up getting shot at close range. Even then it only stings for a while. Really guys, I promise you, it's a lot worse in your minds than on the field.
Be afraid to ask questions. "What kind of gun is that?" is one that other players LOVE answering. Admire their guns, someday they'll be drooling at one of yours. We can all appreciate beauty. Don't be afraid to ask "What's this?" and point to a part. If the guy is any sort of decent player he'll tell you and explain what it does. You'll learn quickly.
Wipe. Ever. Every player hates wipers and if caught doing it, expect to be lit up by 17+ balls a second from some kind of gun from the netherworld. And if you wiped, I won't cry for you. Cheating is NOT tolerated. If it broke on you or your gun, game over, there's a new one in another 5 minutes.
Dont brag about your skills or your setup, nothing more annoying then a trash talking newb.
The last one is controversial. My motto is never surrender. So....DO NOT surrender UNLESS your personal safety is jeopradized (fogged mask etc). I personally saw a new guy on my team using a rental marker tag the last two experianced players left. One was shooting a $1400 gun and the other an $1100 gun. If you're gonna go down, take one with you.
DO:
Keep your barrel plug in with at all times you're not in a shooting area. The importance of this is doubled and tripled when you finally get an e-marker that can go off if you look at it funny. Remember to keep it in your pocket in case you get shot out. As soon as you're out, yell "HIT!" a couple times and get your plug in. A player without a barrel plug in looks like a live player.
Keep moving. Confuses the life out of your opponents, makes the game exciting for you, and gives you a better angle on your opponents.
Get out there and fight. Don't hide behind the bunker unless you're getting shot at. You'll do no good sitting behind the bunker all day. You'll never make any great moves if you don't take risks.
Expect the unexpected. Especially in the woods. There's a nasty surprise everywhere in the woods. Opponents hiding, branches, thorn bushes, man eating bears......
Have fun. You're not out there to whip anyone, you're out there because you like the game. Winning enhances your fun, but I've had a blast even on losing teams.
Hope I helped and I'm sure I missed many that will be added onto by other players here on pbreview.com. If you have any newbie questions, don't be afraid to PM me. I can help with most any question except concerning mechanics of high end markers. Then you need to go to one of the High End boys like theflash.
