I'm gonna be playing some outlaw ball this weekend and there isn't a chrono, is there a way to eyeball marker fire to make it easy to make sure you're not shooting hot?

Nope you cant unless you see it lobbing likehell then your ok. But thats no fun. So i wouldnt even play there it doesnt sound to safe.

chrono it at some local shop. or see if anyone else going has one. i'd highly protest playing outlaw w/o knowing everyone is at or under 300fps.

experience, plain and simple. for your safety, and the safety of others, get a chrono.

Well... Kinda... but its not real accurate..

Umh, just basically if you see the paintball going uber fast turn it down.. if you cant see the paitnball fly outta the barrel and hit an object 50 feet away... turn it down... stand back prolly 70 yards, shoot it, it should start lobbing right before it hits...

Atleast these are what we use when we play

(btw, i dont really know if its 70 yards... im really bad with measurement... but if you come down i'll tell you wehre to stand and shoot! )

You can kind of eyeball it, but not accurate and you would have to be around them a bit to know. You can tell if some1 is shooting 350. So, the best thing to do in your case (which is still not safe) is just have them shoot a ways and determine it by that. If you think it's hot turn it down. You have to go with your gut, and if you think it is hot, turn em down. Oh, and if some1 got hit and it really hurt, then it was too late.:D I would not play w/o a chrono, but if they are still in the sdafe limits cause you were just at a field you should be fine.;)

Doesn't help you beforehand, but if some welts are bleeding and they weren't bunkers, then that marker is hot.

There's an article about making a chrono out of corrugated cardboard somewhere. Not accurate, but it's enough to tell if it's safe.

hmmm.. thx, the only thing that sucks around here is that there aren't any local shops that I know of, I am playing phone tag right now to find somewhere that can install an anti-siphon for me. I know of a few places an hour away that I don't have numbers for so I figure I'll drive up there tommorow and hope someone does it. I want to buy a chrono to use for when I'm not at a field, but 90-some bucks is a lot of dough for something no one else wants to pitch in for.

Chronos are easy to get your parents to chip in for.....
First, mention that you'll pay for part of it. That's always good.
Second, remind them that it's better you buy a chrono than heroin.
Third, if the first two don't work, remind them that you're gonna play anyway and they wouldn't want you to get hurt would they?

i'm joking, of course.

Usually whenever i play with friends at least one persons is set at the right speed, so we just have that guy shoot at something, and have everybody else hit the same object at the same distance. Thats how we do it, not the best, but safer than most.

I noticed that in the cold, if you see a huge cloud a co2 coming from your barrel after a shot, your shooting hot. I dont know how hot, but its definetely over 280fps.

http://www.williamson-labs.com/target-lt.htm

there is that and another one I found for the homemade chrono, but unless I am mistaked if my paintballs go through any layers of corrugated cardboard, I'd run out of people to play with pretty quick.

wait, maybe the one about going thru carboard was below that on the google... either way I don't think it would work for paintball, and it looks really confusing.

If you play with 9 other people, you can just have everyone chip in $10. It's not that bad. Tell them that since they are saving $10 a pop on field fees, it's still a bargain.

Seriously though, get a chrono.

if you know for a FACT that you're shooting around 270-280 or so, then start firing at a target fairly far away. then, have each person fire right along side of you, and turn their velocity down until the flight time of the paintballs is the same.

(it'll waste paint, but it is a good measure.)

One time I played woods and was shooting chunks of bark off the tree, that was a good sign that I was shooting hot. After awhile you can just tell if your shooting hot. Just eyeball it the best you can, thats what I do.

you can set a piece of plywood 280ft or 300ft away and get a timer. you set up the gun 280-300ft from the plywood. hold a timer in your hand and right when you shoot your marker click the timer. if the ball hits the ply wood in 1 second then you have the 280-300fps. you will probably need to adjust this many times. This is just a theory though. I will dub it the poor man's chrono. Just to let you know, I'm in school right now...

Smart.

"Not smart"

That would work in theory except at 300ft , a paintball will slow WAY down so if you hit a target at 300' in one second, your going to be shooting WAY hot as well.

The bottom line is there's no way you could possible judge the speed "by eye" so don't even pretend to,your only endangering everyone who you play with.

Hand helds are under $100,get your parents and a few friends to chip in $20 each and be safe.

Jay.

Paint doesn't fly that far. Not to mention the delay you'd have with reaction time and the time it takes the sound to get from the plywood to you.

wind resistance too......slows the ball down....damn friction allways spoils my fun!:pissed:

If you don't have a chrono, be safe and turn the velocity all the way down or most of the way down. Even if it lobs, you have to be safe. Then next time, buy a chrono. The handhelds are pretty cheap.

by legal means, of course.

I just ordered a chrono the other day. It wasn't just for safety but also so that I can sweet spot my reg. My bro and I chipped in to get it.

I bought a used handheld Radar chrono for $40 and it was probably one of the best paintball investments I made... Knowing everyone is safe is worth it alone, not to mention how helpful they are for fine tuning your markers, I highly suggest buying one. Plus, all the other guys will think you are cool for having the high tech gear! ;) ...

Yeah $40, that sounds like a nice price, maybe I'll just buy one myself and charge everyone a dollar to use it until most of it is paid off...
