View Full Version : Dispelling popular myths

There are some things I would like to share with everybody in here, to save them some money and embarrassment.
1. Barrels- Longer barrels are NOT more accurate, and they do not get more distance. Anything longer than 12 inches is unnecessarily long, and has NO advantages whatsoever over a shorter barrel.
2. Closed vs. Open bolt- Closed bolt guns do not get more distance than open bolt. They might generally be more accurate merely because most closed bolt guns are more consistent than most open bolt guns, but all else being equal they will have the same accuracy too. Advantages to closed bolt are that it is generally quieter and very gentle on paint.
3. Paintballs hurt- Oh don't be such a wimp :D
4. Muckraker uses a walker- I don't know where this came from, but it's my understanding that he gets along fine with just a cane.
5. Muckraker has a great sense of humor- Not actually a myth (I hope) :D  ;)
I don't know why I'm picking on Muck alluvasudden, I just think he's a funny ol' guy!

I dunno about that humor thing, from what I hear, he's got a vicious backhand with that cane that he uses on people who poke fun at him :)

How old is Muckraker? Just wondering cause Im 45 and I play with my son 14 and many of his friends of 13 - 15 age. Im wondering if Muckraker is older or younger than me. Thats the beauty of paintball I think, dont matter what age male or female, everyone can play.
I have been reading most all the posts here on this forum and I get a kick out of the "Which gun is best for beginner" type questions. Im a newbie to paintball but I can see that it dosent matter what gun you have if your new you still have to learn basics of the game.I think if you took two kids new to paintball and gave one an Angel and one a Kingman Spyder niether one would be any better than the other. The one thing that bugs me playing with newbies is no one wants to work together as a team.Everyone wants to run off on thier own then they get shot and before you know it the whole teams done. Thats why my friends from our churh are getting a team up so we can work together and learn teamwork. I dont know a lot about paintball but I do know close tatics of flanking and manuvering.

A team is a great way to meet new friends as well as better yourself as a paintball player, both in your individual game, and your team game. When you guys get together, spend an hour or so at every practice running drills. Simple things, like sliding into a bunker and then popping up and taking a shot in the shortest amount of time. Or snap shooting (taking a few very quick shots and returning to cover as soon as possible), and have a friend stand in front of you (dont shoot him :) ) and he can point out what parts of your body you left exposed ie :"Your elbow is sticking out too far". Things like that, will greatly improve your game, at a rate much faster than just playing against other people all the time. However, you should still spend the majority of your time playing other people, it just helps to work on your skills too :)

well that is a good way of putting it. If you are new to this game then yes, it doesn't matter what gun you have because you have to learn the basics. But most people will agree when i say don't get an expensive gun as your first marker. I learned a lot with my first marker, BE Stingray II, how the markers work, tactics, etc.
just like what elTwicho said, Paintball serves as a good social function too. I met so much new people playing paintball it's a great way to make new friends and have a good time.

Nope, it's the same firing position as open bolt anyway. With either system, the bolt will be in the forward position when the valve releases gas to propel the ball, so really there isnt any difference. Only change is that with open bolt, you pull the trigger, bolt moves forward and fires, and closed bolt, bolt is already forward then you fire. Not only would the "closed bolt is more accurate and has better range" argumen defy physics, essentially it's the same operation, so there's no sense trying to say one is better

is it true though that closed bolts have better shot to shot velocity consitancy at high bps?

Hah hah ... when I joined PBReview, I was the oldest person posting on the boards (36 soon to be 37) and somehow the "Age Thing" just got stuck to me, so the younger guys and I started kidding about how I needed to take my Geritol and such.
Actually, right now, I'm gimp in the right leg cause I tore tendon in my Knee on Saturday trying to make a Hero Play. But, I'm getting around fine without a cane, crutches or wheelchair (for now).
And you're right, Fox, the best thing about paintball is that you're never too old. I play with what is quickly shaping up into a Rec/Tourny team; two of us in our 30s, one in his 40s and three in their 20s. The two youngest are college students and the rest of us have full-time jobs. You gotta love a sport when you can participate as an equal with KIDS who've played longer than you, and Old Farts who've played less than you.

oww muck torn tendon in the knee that must hurt. I had a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder a year back. Had to get it surgicaly repaired. That kept me out of pb for about 6 months.

The most painful thing is this Darn brace the doctor is making me wear ... OUCH!
I separated my shoulder about 10 years ago, it still ain't right. But, at least I didn't have to have surgery. I couldn't imagine having to sit on the sidelines for six months. I'd go stir crazy.

I said that because all the closed bolt guns i have seen have out shot open bolt guns. cockers have more range than open bolts, and so does my shocker. it can outshoot my procarbine or friends tl+'s any day (i'm not slaming the tl+ it is still a great gun) but closed bolts simply are better in my oppinion. i'm not saying that because i have a closed bolt gun either. i have thought that sence i started playing. i don't know what makes them better, they they just are.

titanium is so the shell don't break in your metal barrels..aaggg.....it does not hurt any more than the ball you are using now....don't be afraid!

Like I said before, it's scientifically impossible, and like I also said before, both guns fire from a bolt forward position, exact same identical to the last ioata position actually, it's just a difference in what sequence of the cycle the bolt is in when you pull the trigger, when the gas is actually released, it's the same. So it's completely impossible for closed bolt to make any difference at all over open bolt

My open bolt stay right up with a cocker in range, its like this alot of stuff has got too do with it,if your both using the same balls same barrel etc.there will be no diffrence.
