My friend just starting off paintball and dosent know what gun to get. I told him tippmann 98 cuz its dependable and sturdy and all around good first gun. What other guns would be good for under $150?

It depends, are you going to be playing more woodsball or speedball?
Speedball-Spyder, Pirhana, other spyder clones...

Ok, I would recomend a Spyder Imagine for $100. Use the other $50 for a barrel like a Cp 1 piece, SP teardrop, or a J&J Ceramic. A 98c would be more expensive then the imagine and I think the Imagine is just a better gun.

does he need a tank & hopper, too, or just the marker?

Spyder Imagine + Empire Reloader at paintballgateway is about 150 and would be much better than the 98 Custom, but only if he wants an electric marker. Ask if he wants an electric frame or mechanical one.

This for $100 (http://www.actionvillage.com/010-1617.html)
Then go for an Evo2. Comes out abouts 160-170. Or go for the Empire reloader.

I too would recomend the Imagine plus Empire Reloader. Tell him to see if he can shoot both markers at a field or something, and see which one he likes the feel of better.

i say he should get a 98c, because if he doesnt know how to take care of a gun, and he drops it, he will at least be assured it wouldnt be broken. But with a somewhat fragile spyder, it might up somehow. Its only my opinion, but w/e

Tippmann? You need to put way to much money into a tippy to get it to stand up to a (stock) spyder.
Unless he's playing woodsball only in rain non stop get a stacked tube. Not from kingmann though, while they do make solid products they are way overpriced. And their E-Frames suck.
